Low Carbon communities’ challenge

The Department of Energy and Climate Change has launched the Low Carbon Communities Challenge, a two-year programme to provide financial and advisory support to 20 ‘test-bed’ communities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland that are seeking to cut carbon emissions, support inward investment and foster community leadership.

The Challenge is focused on communities already taking action, or facing change, in the area as a result of climate change - they may be a Warm Zone, eco-town or low carbon community, or a potential candidate for a wind farm, electric cars or community-scale retrofitting of homes - and with an interest in using this to spur an ambitious, integrated programme of carbon reductions in the area.

The Challenge offers:

-Capital infrastructure funding for carbon emissions reduction (up to £500,000, or more in exceptional cases) to stimulate partner and community investment in the area. The funding comes from the Low Carbon Investment Fund (LCIF)

-Introductions to potential third, public and private sector services through a new partner consortium offering free advice and support.

-A common framework and practical support across the 20 communities to share learning and evaluation.

-The challenge also offers a profile that comes from being part of a large-scale, multi-partner and government-backed initiative.

Applicants are eligible to apply if they:

-Are a local authority/council, local strategic partnership or legally constituted third sector organisation;

-Are applying on behalf of a community in England, Wales or Northern Ireland that is already taking action, or facing change, as a result of infrastructure development or behavioural measures that could achieve carbon reductions;

-Have the skills and resources to build on this action and develop integrated proposals for carbon reduction.

-Have demonstrable support from grassroots community leaders and local partners in the area.

-Are fully committed to evaluation and the role that research and co-inquiry will provide in assessing both the carbon impact of the initiatives and the valuable learning that can be gained and spread to others.

How to apply:

The Challenge will be run in two phases. Applicants may apply in either one of them. Phase 1 'first mover' applications are for green 'exemplar' communities that already have integrated community plans to tackle climate change.  To this end, £5 million is available for applicants who put forward bids to support capital expenditure for existing projects in this financial year. Most applicants will receive up to £500,000, but in exceptional circumstances applicants may receive more.
Phase 2 'second mover' applications are for communities already taking some action or facing change in the area, and with an interest in developing integrated plans for cutting carbon emissions. Around 12 communities will be selected to share the funding of £5 million available over the financial year 2010/11, with applicants being able to apply for up to £500,000.

All applicants are requested to register interest by 12 noon on Wednesday 28 October 2009.

Please email indications of the intention to apply to: challenge@decc.gsi.gov.uk

London 2012 Unlimited

Unlimited, the
UK’s largest arts and disability programme was launched by London 2012 as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. The programme is the result of a three year consultation process across the disability, arts and disability sports sectors.
The total project fund of £3m, provided principally by the Olympic Lottery Distributor using National Lottery funds, with additional funding and delivery by Arts Council England, the British Council, the Scottish Arts Council, Arts Council of Wales, Arts Council of Northern Ireland and London 2012, will celebrate disability, arts, culture and sport on an unprecedented scale.
The £3m fund is split into two sections, half in a commissioning fund of £1.5m for new work which is believed to be the largest single investment in creative work by disabled artists. The second half of the programme will provide support to artists to develop their talent and skills and present their work to audiences in the
UK and abroad.

More Gift Aid Gold Available

NICVA is re-running its Gift Aid Gold training course to inform voluntary and community organisations how to use and maximise cash claimed back on donations. Can charities really afford not to use Gift Aid in the current financial climate?

In NICVA's experience charities are either not using Gift Aid at all - or are not fully reclaiming the 28% cash that can be recovered on all eligible donations past, present and future.

Some of the common missed opportunities are:

·       Not claiming Gift Aid on membership schemes

·       Not claiming Gift Aid on sponsored events

·       Not claiming Gift Aid at charity dinners

·       Not claiming the extra Gift Aid from higher-rate tax payers

·       Not claiming Gift Aid on donated goods which can be converted into cash donations

·       Not claiming Gift Aid on the past six-years of donations

·       Not claiming Gift Aid at all

We are taking bookings now for the next session on 19 November 2009, from 2.00pm to 4.30pm at NICVA. Please contact Roisin Kelly at roisin.kelly@nicva.org. The course costs £50 for NICVA members or £70 for non-members.

For organisations who wonder if Gift Aid could be relevant to them or whether they will learn anything new at the course please do call NICVA on 028 9087 7777 to ask your Gift Aid questions.

'50 Years of Golden Memories – St Mary's College 1959–2009' Book Launch

St Mary’s College is delighted to launch the eagerly awaited publication 50 Years of Golden Memories –

St Mary's College 1959–2009, published by Guildhall Press.  The publication was commissioned as part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Creggan school and tells the story of the school from its inception in 1959 when the Sisters of Mercy opened its doors as the first all girls secondary school to its present 21st century college. The reader is taken on a memorable journey through fifty eventful years of dedicated academic endeavour in a supportive community environment.
The book is filled with photographs, articles and stories told by pupils and staff, past and present, and illustrates the tremendous spirit and courage of the pupils and staff alike as they maintained an oasis of calm amidst the backdrop of the turbulent years of the Troubles. Faces from the five decades smile out on every page willing the reader to continue reading.

School Principal, Marie Lindsay said:
“The publication is the result of months of dedicated work by a small team who have painstakingly researched and collated all the stories and pictures. Particular credit must go to Cora Baker and Moira Curran who compiled all the material. We are indebted to all who have contributed in making this book the ‘treasure’ that it is – those who took the time to write the stories, take the pictures and research the articles. Particular credit goes to the staff of Guildhall Press for their professionalism and attention to detail. This beautiful full-colour publication makes an elegant gift and keepsake to bring to life the treasure of those formative and memorable school days.”

50 Years of Golden Memories St Mary’s College 1959–2009 is available online from http://www.ghpress.com and from Eason’s, Ship quay Books & News, Foyle Books and from the office at St Mary’s College, Creggan. Paperback £12.95. ISBN: 9781906271213.
