Under the programme, organisations can apply for funding to:

- increase local services

- build skills of local people

- increase community cohesion

FREE 4 week course for mental health professionals

Teya Sepinuck, founder and artistic director of Theatre of Witness will offer a FREE 4 week course for mental health professionals during September 2011.

Workshop dates are: Wednesday 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th from 6.30 – 9.00pm and Saturday 10th, 17th, 24th and 1st from 10.30 – 1.30

Based on this powerful model of healing and bearing witness, the course will offer participants a creative and trusting environment in which to focus on their own personal stories as well as those related to holding and releasing secondary trauma. Participants will use guided imagery, metaphor, discussion, and other creative and imaginative techniques to illuminate and express their personal journeys of supporting others through trauma, as well as finding their own individual wells of strength and resilience. The course will result in biographical writings and drawings, some of which will be developed into more fully expressed informal solo and group Theatre of Witness presentations.

This is a unique opportunity to:

Give attention to yourself and your own story; Explore secondary trauma’s effects on your life and work; Learn new creative expression techniques; Re-find your own passion and strength; Use ritual to express personal and collective grief; Re-dedicate yourself to your mission of support.

Theater of Witness is a form of performance developed by founder and artistic director Teya Sepinuck in which the true life stories of those who have been marginalized by society are performed by the storytellers themselves as a way for audiences to bear witness to significant social issues. Theater of Witness invites audiences to put a face and heart to societal issues of suffering, and celebrate the power of the human spirit to grow and transform. In residence between 2009-10 in Derry/Londonderry, Teya created We Carried Your Secrets with fathers on the front lines during the Troubles and those of the next generation bearing the legacy, and I Once Knew A Girl which focused on the unheard stories of women in relation to the Troubles.

Teya Sepinuck, MS Counseling, has been creating Theatre of Witness productions in the United States, Poland and Northern Ireland since 1986. Performers have included; refugees; immigrants; survivors and perpetrators of war and conflict; prisoners, their families and victims; people living in poverty or without homes; those healing from domestic abuse; teen parents; people in recovery; and teenage runaways. http://www.theatreofwitness.org/

From Stockholm to Strabane!

Twenty-two year old Oskar Gustavsson from Sweden is one of 27 relay reporters charged with telling the extraordinary stories of volunteers around Europe during the European Year of Volunteering 2011.  The EYV Relay Team each produce a series of video and audio clips and articles which will be broadcast and published in the media and on the European EYV Website.  Volunteer Now had the pleasure of hosting Oskar last week when he participated in a packed itinerary of filming volunteering projects across the Province.

Oskar’s first impressions were extremely favourable saying “arriving at Volunteer Now in Belfast today I don’t think it was the sunshine that created the beauty.  The City was genuinely stunning and the people are very friendly!  I have had an opportunity to speak to and film a range of wonderful volunteers across Northern Ireland including Belfast, L’Derry and Strabane and have enjoyed hearing their stories and motivation for volunteering.    I have also had the opportunity to watch some Gaelic football which I did not know existed but apparently it’s as Irish as Guinness!”

After four days Oskar left to visit projects in Dublin and to attend the European Year of Volunteering Roadshow where he officially handed over the filming equipment to the Irish Reporter bound for Poland.  To find out more about EYV 2011 and current stories from the various reporters visit:  www.eyv2011.eu

Wonderful Wildlife Day

Come along to Creggan Country Park on Wednesday 31st August and take part in a fun filled day dedicated to local wildlife!

Creggan Country Park will be host to a fun filled family day (and night!) focusing on wildlife so you get the most out of the last day of the summer holidays!

It’s the perfect time of year to get outdoors for some fresh air and explore nature on your doorstep.

Learn more about local wildlife from various environmental groups including Derry City Council's Biodiversity and Recycling officers, NI Bat Group, Groundwork NI and RSPB.

Volunteer Now will also be on hand to provide information to visitors on volunteering opportunities throughout the North West.

From 12noon – 4pm visitors can take part in environment games, guided walks, wildlife treasure hunt, planting activities, butterfly, moth and wildflower guides and children’s composting workshop.

Face painters and balloon modellers will also be there to add to the fun!

Families can also experience the new Heritage trail at Creggan Country Park, a treasure hunt style walking route complete with picnic areas and willow domes which provides the perfect setting for enjoying lunch in the great outdoors.  Bring along your own waste free picnic, with the chance of learning about reducing and recycling your waste.

The fun doesn't end there! From 9.30pm-11pm, take part in a bat walk and explore nocturnal wildlife at Creggan Country Park with the NI Bat Group.  Advanced booking is essential for the evening event.

Creggan Country Park provides an ideal location for families to get up close to wildlife as it is host to buzzards, hedgehogs, bats, foxes, butterflies and moths.

Karen Healy, Environmental Officer at Creggan Country Park said “We are delighted to work with other environmental organisations to raise awareness on local wildlife and give families a chance to get up close to nature.”

Sarah Jane Goldring, Volunteer Now added "Unlocking Potential, a Volunteer Now project in association with the North-West Volunteer Centre applauds Creggan Country Park's continued initiatives such as "Wonderful Wildlife Day". It provides an opportunity to promote a wide range of biodiversity projects on our door step here in the North-West.”

Telephone Scam - a warning from PSNI Officer

I received a call from a 'representative' of BT, informing me that he was dis-connecting me because of an unpaid bill. He demanded payment immediately of £31.00 or it would be £118.00 to re-connect at a later date.

The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media, allegedly VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental!

I asked the guy's name - he gave me the very 'English' John Peacock with a very 'African' accent - & phone number - 0800 0800 152.

Obviously the fellow realized I didn't believe his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up & try phoning someone - he would dis-connect my phone to prevent this. AND HE DID!!

My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing - until he phoned me again.

Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made and he said credit card, there and then.

I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT.

He hung up.
I dialed 1471 - number withheld
I phoned his fictitious 0800 number - not recognized, so I phoned the police to let them know. I wasn't the first! It's only just started apparently, but it is escalating.

Their advice was to let as many people as possible know of this scam. The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people its real, so please make as many friends & family aware of this.

How is it done?
This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should have been 0800 800 152 which takes you through to BT Business.

The cutting off of the line is very simple, he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can't dial out - but he can hear you trying  (This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back.

You could almost be convinced!

The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool the elderly and vulnerable.

By the way this is not about getting the cash as this would not get past merchant services - it is all about getting the credit card details which include the security number so that it can be used for far larger purchases.

Andy ORPIN, Police Community Support Officer
