Social Inclusion Forum

Monday November 7, 3pm to 5pm

Donegal CWC, Riverfront House, Letterkenny

The Social Inclusion Forum is part of the structures put in place by the Government to support the development of the National Action Plan for Social Inclusion 2007-2016. The event provides a forum for wider public consultation and discussion on social inclusion issues, particularly with people experiencing poverty and social exclusion and the groups that work with them. SIF 2011 will take place on the 9th of November in the F2 Centre in Rialto. To register please email social.inclusion@welfare.ie

Preparatory Meetings

As part of the preparation process for the SIF, the Social Inclusion Division has asked the Community Workers’ Co-operative and the EAPN to carry out a number of preparatory workshops. These will provide a background to the The National Action Plan for Social Inclusion and present information on current poverty targets and current levels of poverty and social exclusion as well as presenting the background to the SIF. A key element of the workshops will be an exploration of the social impacts of the current economic situation within different communities and a discussion about how best to represent these issues at the SIF. There is support from CWC and EAPN and a small fund available to support a limited number of people to attend the SIF.

One Donegal Cultural Diversity Month

Please find attached the programme of events for the 2011 Donegal CDB Peace and Reconciliation Partnership's One Donegal Cultural Diversity Month which is taking place throughout November.   This programme will also be available on the Council's website www.donegalcoco.ie, the Donegal CDB website www.donegalcdb.ie and on Donegal County Council's Facebook page.   We will be updating these regularly throughout the month so please keep checking, and also follow us on twitter.   I will also be circulating hard copies of the programme from next week to all participating agencies and various locations throughout the county.

If you know anyone else who may wish to receive hard copies of the brochure, or would like a hard copy for your own records, please contact Sarah Thompson (sthompson@donegalcoco.ie).  If your organisation or group has a website or social media pages it would be great if you would consider posting the programme details on this also.

The wide range of activities in this year’s programme reflects the variety of work supported by the Partnership through the Donegal PEACE III Action Plan (2008 - 2013) in an effort to attain their shared vision of  “Donegal, a county where racism and sectarianism no longer exists and where all feel equally valued and confident that they belong.”

We would like to acknowledge the work of all who are involved in hosting events throughout the month and wish all of the events well.  Supported events are free of charge and we would encourage everyone to get involved in the planned activities to help make the One Donegal Cultural Diversity Month a success.

If you require any further details on the month of events please do not hesitate to contact Sarah Thompson (sthompson@donegalcoco.ie), or for a specific event please contact the person whose details are given in the programme.

North West Centre for Learning and Development (NI)

It is with regret that the Board of the North West Centre for Learning and Development (NI) has decided to close the centre. This is the result of a number of funding cuts and delays in the start of a number of other projects that the centre was involved in. This has been a hard decision to make and will end the centres 32 years’ service to the community.

The Board of North West Centre for Learning and Development (NI) would like to make donations of computers and furniture to some community group or groups who they feel may benefit from their use and in doing so help further the aims of the North West Centre for Learning and Development (NI).

The North West Centre for Learning and Development (NI) asks that any community group or social enterprise that feels they would benefit from this equipment to make request by email to lindsay@nwcld.org with the subject line equipment donation; by the 2nd November 2011 stating what you would like and how you feel this would help your community activities. Please also include a brief out line of what you do in the community.

The Board will then meet and decide on what will be given to out and to whom.

Attached is a list of the items available (on MS Excel spreadsheet).

The type of questions asked includes self reported scales on physical and mental health, social supports,

quality of life and attitudes to ageing.

The first interim report based on information gathered at baseline and 6 month follow-up has now been produced and we would like to share emerging trends or patterns by holding a number of information sessions (lunch provided).

• What tips, information, advice or expertise do you have to help other organizations make their activities deaf friendly?

• Do you have any experiences (positive or negative) that might help us understand the specific needs of arts organisations?

• What resources / training do you need to support you to make your activities deaf friendly?

L/Derry event to help NI’s rural communities transform their villages

Thursday 3rd November

City Hotel, L/Derry

FREE event

Rural communities across Northern Ireland are being urged to attend a free event in L/Derry that will see business experts and rural specialists descend on the city to help struggling communities revive their villages.

L/Derry has been announced in the UK-wide events series as part of the Big Lottery Fund’s Village SOS campaign, which is supporting communities across the UK to start up new enterprises - from shops and food projects to broadband schemes - that will help to rejuvenate their areas and meet the needs of local people.

As well as the free events, the campaign includes a nationwide advice line, where people can get expert advice about setting up and running community enterprises from business, social enterprise and rural specialists.

The event, organised by rural communities charity Plunkett Foundation and DTA Northern Ireland, takes place on Thursday 3rd November at City Hotel, and will see Niall McFerran, Chair of Ballygally Community Development Association and Big Lottery Fund Northern Ireland attending alongside rural and business experts from the likes of the Rural Community Network, Plunkett Foundation, Co-operatives UK, and Locality, who will explain how community ownership can save Northern Ireland villages from rural decline.

Joanne McDowell, Big Lottery Fund NI Director, said: “Village SOS is all about inspiring community action – empowering people to come together to make a difference in their communities.

“The event in L/Derry on 3rd November is one part of our campaign to support communities in Northern Ireland on their journey. Attendees will have the opportunity to get expert advice from some of the country’s foremost rural and enterprise specialists who will help to develop their ideas for community enterprises and set about making them a reality.”

For more information about the events series or the advice line, contact the Advice Team on 0845 434 9123 or visit www.villagesos.org.uk.
