Call for PhD Studentship and Fellowship grant applications

Through its Research into Ageing Fund, Age UK makes grants for research to improve the health and wellbeing of older people. Our emphasis is on applied and translational research that will or is likely to lead to interventions within 5 years of the end of the project.

We particularly welcome proposals for research in areas of health and wellbeing where ageing aspects of the problem are under-researched. Examples include falls prevention, mental health, incontinence, wound healing and age-related sensory loss.

In 2012, we will focus on our ageing research capacity-building awards and now invite applications for:

• PhD Studentships

• Research Fellowships

• Joint BGS/Age UK-RiAF Clinical Fellowships

Grants are awarded to UK universities and other recognised higher education institutions, recognised research institutions and NHS trusts. For PhD Studentships, the lead applicant should normally be a salaried employee in an eligible institution. For Fellowships, we support the Fellow’s salary for the period of the award and the sponsor should be a tenured employee of the host institution.

Deadline for submission of Expressions of Interest: 5.00pm on Wednesday 21 December 2011.

Launch of Time Bank Small Grants Programme and Information Session

This is a two part information session for those who have an interest in developing a Timebank. A Timebank is a community based project that measures and rewards the efforts that people make in their community by sharing their skills. Creggan Enterprises and Holywell Trust Social Enterprise Online Questionnaire

Please Complete!!

Holywell Consultancy is working with Creggan Enterprises and Holywell Trust to engage with the community and voluntary and social economy sector in the wider Derry/Londonderry area to carry out a quick snapshot exercise of the assets held within the local community.

The findings from this research will be used to help to inform discussions on how the Acorn Fund, administered by Community Foundation for Northern Ireland, could be used to support the sector. They will also be used to help broaden the discussion about partnership building, joint working and support within the wider sector. The rationale behind the research is ultimately to empower the local community to take ownership and positive steps towards sustaining their future by realising the scale and range of assets held within community ownership.

The main element of the research is an online questionnaire. The questionnaire can be completed by visiting www.surveymonkey.com/s/NWCommunityAssets. The information collated from this questionnaire will be presented to representatives from the sector to help to deepen discussions. The information gathered through this process will be kept as confidential as possible – only collated information will be presented to the wider community.

The deadline for the completion of the survey is Friday 2nd December 2011.

We hope to receive a good response to the survey so that accurate information on the sector is collected. If you require any other information please contact Gerard Deane (Holywell Consultancy) on 7126 7997 or email gerard@holywellconsultancy.com.

Follow The Star to the Celtic Garden Christmas Trail at the IOSAS Centre

This year the Celtic Prayer Garden at the IOSAS Centre, Derryvane, Muff will be transformed to provide a truly memorable Christmas experience for all the family.

Each little house in the garden will have its own Christmas theme and, in the tradition of the great Irish storytellers, will have characters telling the Christian stories behind some of our favourite Christmas traditions. These include the story of St Nicholas, the Christmas Tree Miracle and of course the greatest story ever told, the birth of Jesus.

The tranquil setting will be an oasis for families looking to escape the commercialism, hustle and bustle which can dominate this time of year.  Take some time together to enjoy an experience which will have the children discussing the real Christmas story long after this event.
Families will enjoy a guided trail under starlight and a very special dramatic piece created especially for this event and performed by young people. Children can take part in craft activities including cookie decorating while the parents can take a few moments to enjoy a hot drink and festive treats at the IOSAS Centre Café.

This year capture the excitement of the season and combine it with the true spirit of the Christmas message.

The Celtic Garden Christmas Trail at the IOSAS Centre – the traditions of Christmas past for a wonderful family Christmas present.

‘In Your Corner’ - a series for BBC Northern Ireland

I am a Producer at a television production company based in Belfast, called ‘Below the Radar.’

I am currently working on ‘In Your Corner’, a series for BBC Northern Ireland which will be broadcast in Spring 2012.

This is the second series of the topical weekly programme, presented by Wendy Austin and Claire McCollum, which will once again give local people a chance to air their views – these may be small, large, serious or humorous.   The ‘In Your Corner’ team will travel around Northern Ireland, taking residence in a different town each week.

We are looking for stories now that affect people’s lives such as health, housing, education, unemployment or the environment.

You may have members affected by financial/debt problems, or indeed those who have been victims of scams; In the current economic climate, are local services or schools facing closure?

We want to address the things that matter most, so it you want attention drawn to something that is concerning you or your community, this is the television series you can bring it to.

If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch by email mcurry@thedetail.tv or the numbers below.   You can also contact the In Your Corner team at inyourcorner@bbc.co.uk
