Call for nominations for Women of the Year 2012

Derry City Council is calling for nominations for this year’s Women of the Year awards, which are scheduled to take place in the City Hotel on March 9th.

Organised by Council’s Women’s Development section, the event is set to celebrate women in the Derry City Council area and acknowledge the contribution they have made throughout the city’s communities over the past year.

Joanna Boyd, the Council’s Women Officer explained that last year’s inaugural event was a huge success. She explained: “The awards are aimed at acknowledging the pivotal role women play in shaping our society.  With eleven categories every effort has been made to ensure that all possible opportunities for recognition have been identified.

“I hope that members of the public take the opportunity to use these awards to recognise someone they feel has made an invaluable contribution to the city.  The Council feels its important to recognise women who make such a wonderful contribution to our local community.  Its an opportunity to say thank you and well done to the many women whose dedication and hard work continue unrecognised. I would encourage the public to assist us by getting their nominations into us as soon as possible so we can begin the difficult task of short listing candidates.”

This year’s awards ceremony features awards in the following categories:

Contribution to Women’s Community Development

Contribution to Community Relations

Contribution to Health

Contribution to Sport or Dance

Contribution to dealing with Abuse against Women

Contribution to Arts

Contribution to Formal/Informal Education

Contribution to the Older People

Contribution to Youth

Contribution to Childcare

Contribution to Caring

Young Women’s Award  (must be aged 18 to 25 years old)

Women living with a disability.

Overall Winner : Women of the Year 2012

An individual may only enter one category as regards to categories 1 to 13 inclusive but may also be involved in a nomination for Overall Winner.

Nomination forms are currently available by contacting the Women’s Officer at Derry City Council - tel: (028) 71375151 or are downloadable from www.derrycity.gov.uk/woman

The closing date for entries is noon, Friday 10th February 2012 and all entries must be sent to the Women’s Officer, Derry City Council, Development Department, 98 Strand Road, Derry, BT48 7NN.  Nominations should be inside sealed envelopes labelled "Women of the Year Award 2012".

‘Getting to know your institutions’

Derry City Council and the Rural Community Network Rural Enablers Programme would like to inform you about an upcoming Community Relations course, which takes place over 6 weeks during February and March 2012.  The course aims to make people more aware of institutions such as the Orange Order, GAA, Churches, etc.  It will involve a mystery tour of visits to these intuitions in the Derry City Council area to find out about the history and importance of these institutions to their patrons.

Participants will get a chance to visit the premises of the institutions to take them physically into a space that they may not have been in before and it will give the institutions a chance to give different perceptions of their organisations and get rid of some myths surrounding them.  Participants will not know in advance which institution that they are visiting each week to make sure that people are open minded about the course and not self selecting.  Participants have to be able to attend all sessions which will be held on Monday evenings from the 6th February right through to 12th March.  Transport will be provided each week to get people to the institutions.

Please contact Angela or Kate to receive a booking form, which must be completed in order to apply to gain a place on the course.  Applications will be accepted on a “first come first served” basis.

Should you wish to find out more information about this course, please contact Angela Askin on 7136 5151 or Kate Clifford on 8676 6670

How to... Facilitate Suicide Support Groups

City Hotel, L/Derry, 16 and 17 February 2012

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)'s two-day, hands-on Training Program:

Facilitating Suicide Bereavement Support Groups, helps survivors of suicide loss, mental health

professionals, and interested others learn the "how-to's" of creating and facilitating a support group.

It combines lecture, interactive discussion, and role-playing with individualized feedback, and it also

provides an opportunity to have questions answered, hear new ideas, and practice skills.

The program is appropriate for those who want to start a new group, as well as those who currently facilitate a group and would like to increase their knowledge and skills. Note: In order to create an environment in which participants can best develop and practice the skills necessary to facilitate a group effectively, we ask survivors of suicide loss to wait at least 2 years after the suicide of their loved one before attending. This training program is not meant to serve as a healing conference.

Because this is an AFSP training, attendees are not permitted to promote themselves or other organizations through brochure distribution, fundraising, the sale of any items, or time on the agenda.

Meet with other facilitators from around the country

Come away motivated and recharged

Increase your knowledge and skills

Learn how to start a new group
