The
Time is Right: a New poll leaves no doubt of mandate for Bill of Rights
action 1pm

opportunity: 12.45pm Stormont steps On
Monday 14 November the Human Rights Consortium, a coalition of 192
organisations from across the community and sectoral spectrum will launch
their new publication ‘Bill of Rights for Campaigns
Manager Sorcha McKenna said: “While there may be a sense that the Bill of
Rights debate has gone away this is clearly not the case with more and
more people from all communities, backgrounds and age groups engaging in
grassroots human rights work. These are people suffering from the legacy
of the conflict and the increased cuts who see a real need for their
rights to be protected – now more than ever.” This
new publication aims to reawaken the debate at the Assembly and shows just
how out of touch some parties are with the views of their electorate. Not
only is there huge support from Catholics (81%) and Protestants (83%) but
this time we can show just how the voters of each of the Executive parties
feel about a Bill of Rights. This evidence will provide a clear mandate
for our politicians to break the political stalemate and finally deliver
on one of the core commitments of the MLA’s
will join members of the Consortium along with officials from the
Department of Foreign Affairs and the US State Department (NIO haven’t
confirmed attendance yet) at the publication launch at 1pm in the
Brasserie, Cross
party sponsorship has been secured with MLAs Martina Anderson SF, Sammy
Douglas DUP, Alban Maginness SDLP and Basil McCrea UUP all giving their
support to the event. (Please
note that All Party sponsorship is expected but at time of press release

New
chance to ‘crowdfund’ community projects A new website
is offering the public a chance to 'crowdfund' community
projects. The
Scottish-based website SoLoCo, which was launched this month, will feature
a number of projects which donors will be able to donate
towards. The website is
run by a social enterprise of the same name and is used to attract large
numbers of small donations from members of the public in a short space of
time. The model has already been used successfully for arts projects in
the The main aim
is to make it easier to raise funds and in time make it easier for
organisations to be become less reliant on the ‘traditional’ funding
bodies. The site also aims to
improve the visibility of communities and all the work happening on the
ground every day. Any community

Jon
Clifford Tribute Quiz – 18 November A table quiz
that will pay tribute to Jon “Ugg” Clifford, will be staged in the
Abercorn Bar on Friday18 November from 9pm. Teams of 6 are invited to take
part with a cost of £3 per team member. Special invitations are extended
to past and present patrons of the Quiz Scene, to the local sports
community and to former players of Tristar or other D & D
clubs. We believe
that this is an appropriate event to pay tribute to his dedication and
enjoyment of the local football and quiz scenes. Proceeds of the Table
Quiz will go to Tristar Boys F.C Jon was
forward thinking and took bold steps during difficult times. He was a
friend, a mentor and a father figure to thousands of local footballers for
almost 4 decades. Not only did he develop the skill and confidence levels
of club members, he also created numerous life-long friendships between
young people from all areas of the city. There is a determination
within the club to continue the immeasurable work that Jon produced on
behalf of Tristar Boys F.C and to leave a lasting legacy to his commitment
and unquestionable support of local young people.
Jon was also
an avid quiz fan and although he was “never wrong”, incredibly he didn’t
win too many quizzes. As a no-nonsense quizmaster and a unique ability to
offend an audience, he still emerged from each quiz night with the
greatest respect and we hope that this Table Quiz will enable the local
community to pay their respects in a light-hearted
manner. To enter a
team or for more information contact Barney Mc Guigan (07854833371),

“Our
Children...Their Education” An evening
discussion chaired by William Crawley on “The challenges, changes &
opportunities for our local schools and
communities.” 6.30 pm – 9.30
pm, Thursday 17 November 2011 Corick House,
Clogher, Co.
Tyrone BT76 0BZ A light tea
will be served from 6.00 pm. This event is
one of a series of local community discussions being organised by RCN and
the IEF with local partners over 2011/2012. The focus of these discussions is
on exploring some of the challenges over the next few years which could
potentially lead to significant changes as to how schools a re planned,
funded, manage d and structured. These challenge s include ensuring that e
ach child receive s the best education possible, forthcoming budget cuts
and working through the many ways we have decided to school our children.
In addition, there are a large number of small schools with empty desks,
with particular challenges in rural areas. This context
presents re al opportunities for local communities, local people, young
and old, and their schools to do things differently; to imagine how
education might be delivered differently in their area in the best
interests of the children, both today and into the future . In some
communities this could involve exploring greater degrees of sharing both
within and between schools. Why
Attend? A chance to
have your say. Meet and talk
to other parents and groups from your area. An opportunity
to hear about some of the challenges and possibilities for schools in your
area. For more
