The Time is Right: a New poll leaves no doubt of mandate for Bill of Rights action

1pm – 1.45pm 14th November 2011

Brasserie, Parliament Buildings, Stormont

Photo opportunity: 12.45pm Stormont steps

On Monday 14 November the Human Rights Consortium, a coalition of 192 organisations from across the community and sectoral spectrum will launch their new publication ‘Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland: OVERDUE!’

Campaigns Manager Sorcha McKenna said: “While there may be a sense that the Bill of Rights debate has gone away this is clearly not the case with more and more people from all communities, backgrounds and age groups engaging in grassroots human rights work. These are people suffering from the legacy of the conflict and the increased cuts who see a real need for their rights to be protected – now more than ever.”

This new publication aims to reawaken the debate at the Assembly and shows just how out of touch some parties are with the views of their electorate. Not only is there huge support from Catholics (81%) and Protestants (83%) but this time we can show just how the voters of each of the Executive parties feel about a Bill of Rights. This evidence will provide a clear mandate for our politicians to break the political stalemate and finally deliver on one of the core commitments of the Belfast/ Good Friday Agreement.

MLA’s will join members of the Consortium along with officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and the US State Department (NIO haven’t confirmed attendance yet) at the publication launch at 1pm in the Brasserie, Parliament Buildings, Monday 14th November.  Speaking at the launch will be three member organisations -  The Disabled Police Officers Association, Integrated Services for Children and Young People West Belfast, and East Belfast Survivors of Suicide; all of whom will focus on the real impact a Bill of Rights could have on people in Northern Ireland.

Cross party sponsorship has been secured with MLAs Martina Anderson SF, Sammy Douglas DUP, Alban Maginness SDLP and Basil McCrea UUP all giving their support to the event.  (Please note that All Party sponsorship is expected but at time of press release we were waiting confirmation from Alliance member) A selection of these sponsors will speak followed by presentation of polling figures by Ipsos MORI.

Community Foundation for Northern Ireland Observatory Seminar

‘Community Activism: developing relationships between the community and political sectors’

Thursday 17th November, 10am – 1.30pm, followed by lunch

The Main Hall, St Columb's Park House, Derry/Londonderry

Recurring themes in the Observatory’s conversations with community organisations over the past couple of years have been the need for the community sector to return to community activism, and bring back a critical edge to community development. This is written up in the Observatory publication: ‘The Community Sector in Northern Ireland: Responding to challenging times’.

With a newly elected Assembly and signals that local government reform will soon be back on track, the seminar provides a timely opportunity for community organisations to meet together to:

·        learn about different approaches to mobilising communities;

·        share communities’ experiences of getting their issues on the political sector’s agenda;

·        reflect on the community sector’s experiences of developing relationships with the political sector; and

·        discuss how groups can develop these relationships to benefit their local communities and the wider community sector in Northern Ireland.

Speakers:

·        Avila Kilmurray, Community Foundation for Northern Ireland

·        Niall Crowley, Claiming Our Future

·        Lynn Carvill, Women’s Resource and Development Agency

·        Eamonn Deane, Holywell Trust

Strengthening Families Programme (SFP)

The Strengthening Families programme (SFP) is a 14-week family skills programme specifically designed for vulnerable families.  The programme has an international evidence base and is currently being introduced to the WHSCT area through the CAWT Time IVA Change Project and Derry Healthy Cities.  SFP is a recognised early intervention programme which emphasises the critical role of families in prevention and reducing risk to children.

The programme has proven to deliver multiple benefits to vulnerable families including better health outcomes, increased family strengths and resilience, reduced risk factors for problem behaviours in high risk children and improved family relationships, parenting skills, and young people’s social/life skills.

The programme has a three session structure over the 14 weeks.  Each session begins with a family meal, followed by a parents and a teen session which run simultaneously.  The evening finishes with a family session where the whole family have an opportunity to put into practice the skills gained that evening with the guidance of the course facilitators.

During the parent and teen session children under 12 are cared for in our onsite crèche facility.  Transport can be provided for those who require it and there are small incentives throughout the programme to encourage and reward positive engagement.

Main Topics

·        Speaking and Listening

·        How to Manage Stress

·        Being Who You Want to Be

·        Encouraging Good Behaviour

·        Speaking for Yourself

·        Communication for Better Relationships

·        Communication and Family Meetings

·        Empathy: The Other Person's Shoes

·        Family Values

The benefits of the Strengthening Families Programme for Organisations are:

• Access to an evidence based programme to complement/enhance existing work.

• Facilitates greater working on an interagency basis.

• Up skilling and professional development of staff regarding family intervention.

• Ability to enhance existing agency work for vulnerable families.

• Free training programme.

To engage with the programme either as a referral agent or facilitator it is necessary to complete the two day training programme.  Training for referral agents and facilitators will take place on Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th of November 2011 at Alley Theatre in Strabane.

This project is part financed by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund through the INTERREG IVA Cross - border Programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body and the Public Health Agency and managed by Derry Healthy Cities.

New chance to ‘crowdfund’ community projects

A new website is offering the public a chance to 'crowdfund' community projects.

The Scottish-based website SoLoCo, which was launched this month, will feature a number of projects which donors will be able to donate towards.

The website is run by a social enterprise of the same name and is used to attract large numbers of small donations from members of the public in a short space of time. The model has already been used successfully for arts projects in the US.

The main aim is to make it easier to raise funds and in time make it easier for organisations to be become less reliant on the ‘traditional’ funding bodies.  The site also aims to improve the visibility of communities and all the work happening on the ground every day.

Any community project in the UK can register on the site, which will give them 60 days to fundraise. The site is not only open to charities and social enterprises, but also to other projects that benefit communities.

Jon Clifford Tribute Quiz – 18 November

A table quiz that will pay tribute to Jon “Ugg” Clifford, will be staged in the Abercorn Bar on Friday18 November from 9pm. Teams of 6 are invited to take part with a cost of £3 per team member. Special invitations are extended to past and present patrons of the Quiz Scene, to the local sports community and to former players of Tristar or other D & D clubs.

We believe that this is an appropriate event to pay tribute to his dedication and enjoyment of the local football and quiz scenes. Proceeds of the Table Quiz will go to Tristar Boys F.C

Jon was forward thinking and took bold steps during difficult times. He was a friend, a mentor and a father figure to thousands of local footballers for almost 4 decades. Not only did he develop the skill and confidence levels of club members, he also created numerous life-long friendships between young people from all areas of the city.  There is a determination within the club to continue the immeasurable work that Jon produced on behalf of Tristar Boys F.C and to leave a lasting legacy to his commitment and unquestionable support of local young people.

Jon was also an avid quiz fan and although he was “never wrong”, incredibly he didn’t win too many quizzes. As a no-nonsense quizmaster and a unique ability to offend an audience, he still emerged from each quiz night with the greatest respect and we hope that this Table Quiz will enable the local community to pay their respects in a light-hearted manner.

“Our Children...Their Education”

An evening discussion chaired by William Crawley on “The challenges, changes & opportunities for our local schools and communities.”

6.30 pm – 9.30 pm, Thursday 17 November 2011

Corick House, 20 Corick Road

Clogher, Co. Tyrone BT76 0BZ

A light tea will be served from 6.00 pm.

This event is one of a series of local community discussions being organised by RCN and the IEF with local partners over 2011/2012.  The focus of these discussions is on exploring some of the challenges over the next few years which could potentially lead to significant changes as to how schools a re planned, funded, manage d and structured. These challenge s include ensuring that e ach child receive s the best education possible, forthcoming budget cuts and working through the many ways we have decided to school our children. In addition, there are a large number of small schools with empty desks, with particular challenges in rural areas.

This context presents re al opportunities for local communities, local people, young and old, and their schools to do things differently; to imagine how education might be delivered differently in their area in the best interests of the children, both today and into the future . In some communities this could involve exploring greater degrees of sharing both within and between schools.

Why Attend?

A chance to have your say.

Meet and talk to other parents and groups from your area.

An opportunity to hear about some of the challenges and possibilities for schools in your area.

Could You Benefit From Using Digital Media? – Sharing Stories

The Regional Cultural Centre and the Nerve Centre have asked a local project (Sharing Stories) to help promote a short film using social media.  The idea is to record what we do and then present this at a seminar on the 25th  November to local community groups, arts groups and film makers to show them how to use digital media to promote their own projects.

Basically, the wish is for as many people as possible to view the video on YouTube at http://youtu.be/gC_T6y9Oy9U

The promotion is part of the Sharing Stories project, a cross-border community film project run by the Regional Cultural Centre in collaboration with the Nerve Centre. The project has supported 20 community and artist films made in Derry and Donegal over the past 2 years.

If you wish to help/participate:

1.     View the video on YouTube at http://youtu.be/gC_T6y9Oy9U

2.     Forward this email to anyone else you think would view the video - the
more views it gets the better.

3.     "Like" the film's Facebook page www.facebook.com/sharingstoriesbrighterdays

4.     Share the link to the site http://www.sharingstoriesbrighterdays.blogspot.com/ with as many people as possible.
