Would you like to be able to publicly recognise the tremendous work that this individual does?  Why not nominate them for a Voyager Leadership Award?  The Voyager Leadership Awards are the only Awards for Leaders of charity, voluntary or community organisation in Northern Ireland.

There are 7 categories to choose from

- Leading Growth and Innovation

- Leading with Political Impact

- Leading People

- Leading Partnership and Collaboration

- Third Sector Chairperson of the year

- Public/Private Sector Partner of the Year

- Lifetime Commitment to Third Sector Leadership and from these 7 winners an overall Inspiring Leader of the Year will be selected.

It’s really easy to nominate, and nomination forms together with full guidelines and criteria for each category can be found on the website www.awards.co3.bz.  The overall winners will be presented with their awards at a glittering award ceremony on the evening of 23 February 2012 in the City Hotel, Derry.

Big Lottery Fund Reaching Out – Connecting Older People

The Big Lottery Fund in Northern Ireland is making up to £20million available over the next two years to promote the inclusion of older people by targeting those individuals at greatest risk of exclusion or isolation.  Older people can go through a number of transitions in their lives where they are especially at risk of becoming isolated and excluded, such as retirement, health changes, bereavement, or moving into residential care or sheltered housing.

BIG will support projects that:

- Focus on older people aged 60 and over

- Last from three to five years

- Target older people at greatest risk of exclusion and isolation, who could be perceived as ‘hard to reach’

- Involve older people in designing and running the project

They want to fund projects that promote wellbeing, provide support or contribute towards independence and active citizenship, for example, social support activities including volunteering, advice provision, community safety, and intergenerational work.  This programme is an open and competitive programme that will mainly make revenue grants.

Are you eligible?

Community or voluntary led organisations can apply to this programme.  For more detailed information see the apply section of their website and the Connecting Older People guidance notes.

Organisations applying for a grant of between £50,000 and £200,000 can choose to work in partnership, but it is not compulsory.

Organisations applying for a grant of between £250,000 and £500,000 must work in partnership.

Partnerships may include private and statutory organisations and we strongly support and encourage cross-sectoral working.  The lead partner must be a community or voluntary led organisation.

Big Lottery Fund funding should be distinct from government funding and add value.  This programme will not subsidise current or planned services that are normally supported through statutory sources of funding.

What to do next:

If you think you are eligible to apply, look at the apply page and download the guidance notes and outline proposal form at www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/prog_reachingout_older_people.htm?regioncode=-uk&tab=2

Sporting Goals for City of Culture

Culture Company 2013 wish to invite representatives of local sports clubs and sports governing bodies to discuss their ideas for sporting events to be included as part of Derry-Londonderry’s 2013 City of Culture programme at a special event entitled “Goals for 2013” at the Northern Bank Studio in the Millennium Forum Theatre, on Wednesday, December 14 from 7pm - 8.30pm.

The City of Culture team is keen to make sure that the city’s rich sporting heritage takes its rightful place at the forefront of the City of Culture Celebrations in 2013. Sport might not immediately spring to mind when the word culture is mentioned. But, far from being a separate entity, sport is an integral part of the culture of Derry-Londonderry.  From rugby greats like Ken Goodall, through to boxing legends like Spider Kelly, Charlie Nash and John Duddy to current stars like Celtic’s Paddy McCourt and Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson and Olympic hopefuls Aileen Morrison and Jason Smyth, the North West has always punched above its weight on the sporting front.

The “Goals for 2013” event aims to explore the opportunities as to how the local sporting community can make best use of the opportunities presented by the unprecedented platform that 2013 will provide. Whatever sport you are involved in; Soccer, Rugby, GAA, Snooker, Darts, Greyhound Racing, Athletics, Cycling, Boxing, Judo, Cricket, Canoeing or anything else, we want to hear your ideas. If you have a plan from expanding an activity or event that already exists within the local sporting calendar or an idea for a completely new sporting event for 2013 then come along on 14th December.

Registration in advance is required. Due to limited capacity, the maximum number of places per organisation is two. In the event of the consultation being oversubscribed, priority will be given to locally based clubs and organisations in the Derry City Council area.

For further information or to book a place at this event contact Gareth Stewart at gareth.stewart@cityofculture2013.com or Chris McCann at chris.mccann@cityofculture2013.com or by phone on 02871310560.

Spirit of Enniskillen Trust Explore 2012 ‘Young People Leading Change’

The Spirit of Enniskillen Trust (SOE) is now open for applications for the ‘Explore 2012’ leadership programme for young people between the ages of 16 to 19 and resident in Northern Ireland.  The final closing date for applications is Friday 13 January 2012.

Through the Explore 2012 programme 50 young participants will travel to overseas projects in four different destinations across Europe where they will work alongside others coming from diverse and conflicting backgrounds.  As well as learning through the discussion of difficult issues that divide communities, the work is balanced with enjoyment, social activities and fun.  In exploring how these regions are dealing with their differences, participants will also be encouraged to develop the skills necessary to lead dialogue and learning within their own communities at home.  Explore is fully accredited through the Open College Network NI.

To maintain a balance from across the community, the SOE will particularly welcome applications of those coming from marginalised and disadvantaged backgrounds.  Further forms and details can be downloaded from the website – www.soetrust.org or young people can apply directly online.

Performance of Echo Echo co-founder Ursula Laeubli’s final work

Local dance company Echo Echo, welcome long time colleague Emily Welther to its studio in Derry this month to perform a short dance solo, created by Ursula Laeubli before she died in April this year.

Emily, who is from USA but now living in Germany, worked with Echo Echo’s late co-founder on ‘It Just Might Be Enough’, while Ursula was in a clinic in Switzerland for cancer treatment. The solo will be performed on Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st December at 8pm.

Dancer and choreographer Emily said:

“The piece explores the multiplicities of an individual and the ways in which they can be let go.  It is inspired by the ideas and images of Ursula Laeubli, gathered during the months shortly before she died of breast cancer.  At times humorous, at times breath-taking, “It Just Might Be Enough” was created with and dedicated to the beautiful person, Ursula.”

Development Officer Sarah Bryden said:

“Emily’s solo will be incredibly emotional for us all as it was Ursula’s last work. However, having lost our friend and co-founder of the company this year, it will be lovely way to remember her as 2011 draws to a close. We invite all those who knew her and would like to remember her for her creativity and work in movement to come along and watch a performance.”

The performances will take place in Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company’s studio on Bishop Street on Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st December at 8pm. Suggested Donation is £3.

For more information about the performances or about the work of Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company, visit www.echoechodance.com

The project is funded by the Ministry for Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sport of Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, in collaboration with Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company.

2012 Earhart Community Arts Festival and the inaugural "Amelia Earhart Day" May 21st 2012

Please see attached our outline proposals for the 2012 Earhart Community Arts Festival and the inaugural “Amelia Earhart Day” May 21st 2012.

Over the past 12 years we have been delighted with the support we have received in growing and developing “The Earhart Festival” into an important showcase for all that is most positive about our communities and our city but we believe that now is the time to raise the bar and to bring about an international recognition of Derry’s role in one of the most historical moments in aviation history.

The 21st May 2012 marks the 80th Anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s momentous achievement, we would like your help to use this occasion as a launch pad for bringing local, national and world attention to our city and to help us grow, develop and realise the potential that our unique connection to this historical events offers.

In asking for your contribution, input and support for the 2012 Earhart Community Arts Festival and the inaugural “Amelia Earhart Day” we are inviting you, your organisation and your community of interest to take ownership of the Amelia Earhart legacy and to bring your ideas, projects and possible events to the table for inclusion in what we hope will be a truly significant shared celebration of achievement in May 2012.

We look toward to your response and are as always delighted to meet with you and discuss further any ideas that emerge.

Consumer Council shows you how to ‘Weather The Winter’

What to do and who to call if snow affects your flight, there’s a sudden power cut, or your pipes freeze or burst, are just three of the topics covered in the Consumer Council’s new ‘Weather the Winter’ leaflet, which launched the Council’s Winter Campaign on 7 December

The wallet-sized resource also includes your rights when shopping online, as well as tips for saving money on your Christmas shopping, oil, electricity and gas bills.   Free copies are available to download at www.consumercouncil.org.uk or by calling 0800 121 6022.

Antoinette McKeown, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council said:  “Last winter was one of the coldest on record, resulting in disrupted water supplies for thousands, and affecting people’s travel plans at one of the busiest times in the year.  This year, we are advising consumers to be as prepared as possible and our handy leaflet provides tips as well as telephone numbers and website addresses to get information quickly and easily, should bad weather cause problems.  We advise all consumers to keep a copy of our Weather the Winter leaflet in their wallets, near their telephone and home computer; they could even download it from our website and save it to their desktop.  Consumers who are online can also get valuable information from www.nidirect.gov.uk/winter.

Explaining the additional benefits of the Weather the Winter leaflet, Antoinette continued:  “Christmas can be an expensive time of year with the cost of Christmas presents, heating and food bills.  Our leaflet offers consumer’s tips on how to budget for the Christmas period, how to shop safely online and what your rights are should you need to return an unwanted Christmas present.  Consumers can also make sure they’re getting the best price for their home heating oil in their area by using our oil price checker at www.consumercouncil.org.uk and can check if they could save money by switching electricity or gas supplier with our online comparison tool.  The Consumer Council wants to help keep as much money in people’s pockets as possible so they can have a very happy Christmas.”

Are you going away? Will your home be empty at any time during the winter?

The Housing Executive and housing associations are advising householders to keep their home warm if they are going away this winter.

A Housing Executive spokesperson explained:

‘As the Christmas and New Year holidays approach, many people are making plans to visit their families or go on holiday. Last year, however, some householders returned to find their home and possessions were damaged as a result of burst water pipes due to the freezing conditions.

‘Don’t let this happen to you. It’s important to look after your home, particularly, when you are away.

‘To help prevent your pipes from freezing or bursting, you need to keep your home warm. You can do this by setting the timer for your heating to come on for a short time each day or ask a neighbour or member of your family to come in and turn your heating on.

‘If you know a Housing Executive or housing association property is not occupied, please let us know.’

Housing Executive tenants can contact the Housing Executive for further information and advice by telephoning 03448 920 901 or log on to www.nihe.gov.uk.  Housing association tenants should contact their housing association directly.
