Lloyds TSB Foundation NI

The Lloyds TSB Foundation is a generous multipurpose funder of voluntary and community organisations and projects in Northern Ireland.  The Foundation is one of the principal sources of funding for small grants for many organisations.  The overall policy of the Lloyds TSB Foundation for Northern Ireland is to support underfunded charities which enable people, especially disadvantaged or disabled people, to play a fuller role in the community.

In order for organisations to be eligible to apply, they must have an income of less than £1million in the previous 12 months.  For registered charities with a headquarters based outside Northern Ireland, the income of their Northern Ireland operation will be the figure used to assess eligibility.  The average grant is between £3,000 - £4,000.

The Foundation has two main target areas to which it seeks to allocate funds:

Social and community needs & Education and training

Social and community needs

A wide range of activities are supported and the following are meant as a guide only:

Community services: family centres, youth and older people’s clubs, after schools clubs, play schemes, help groups, childcare provision.

Advice services: homelessness, addictions, bereavement, family guidance, money advice, help-lines.

Disabled people: residences, day centres, transport, careers, information and advice, advocacy.

Promotion of health: information and advice, mental health, hospices, day care, home nursing, independent living for older people.

Civic responsibility: juveniles at risk, crime prevention, promotion of volunteering, victim support, mediation, rehabilitation of offenders.

Cultural enrichment: improving participation in and access to the arts and national heritage for disadvantaged and disabled people.

Education and training

The objective in this area is to enhance educational opportunities for disadvantaged and disabled people of all ages.

- Projects which help socially excluded people develop their potential and secure employment

- Employment training (for disabled and disadvantaged people)

- Promotion of life skills, independent living skills for disabled people

- enhancing education for disabled young people, pre-school education, literacy skills (where no other support is available)

How to apply

Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust Ireland Opens

The Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust Ireland Grants scheme focuses on enhancing civil liberties and human rights; encouraging co-operation across religious; racial and political divides; and strengthening civil society.

The Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust aims to fund work which will contribute to the ongoing transformation of the Northern Ireland conflict.

The Trust is interested in funding work which:

- Addresses the root causes of violence and injustice, rather that alleviating symptoms;

- Cannot be funded from other sources; and

- Is likely to make a long-term, strategic difference.

With effect from 5 April 2011, the Trust is operating a new five year programme of responsive grant-making within the following priority areas:

- Strengthening ‘new politics’ in Northern Ireland

- Fostering a culture of human rights, equality and civil liberties

- Encouraging and enabling marginalised groups to play a full part in the political process and in civil society

- Dealing with the past

- Strengthening civil society

The Trust is particularly interested in receiving applications related to women’s participation in all of these areas.  It is also interested in supporting racial justice dimensions to all of the above areas.  In addition to applications from Northern Ireland, it is open to receiving application from Britain and the Republic of Ireland for work related to the above areas, and for work with an all-Ireland focus.  Local work will be supported only where it is likely to have a wider impact, for example if it is testing a model which can then be replicated, or is addressing a local issue that has wider social or political implications.

In exceptional cases, the Trust is willing to make small grants for crisis-response work that has the potential to contribute to wider change.  For further details, please contact the office.  The Trust is also exploring possible pro-active initiatives in the above priority areas during the five-year period from 2011 – 2016.

How to apply

Applications can be sent in at any time.  However, at present the Trust has only three grant cycles each year.  The deadline is first post, or 9.00am UK time for email applications, on the deadline dates.  The deadline for the Spring Grant cycle is 9.00am on 02 April 2012.

Exclusions apply

Age Old Stories project aims to bring vulnerable people together to look at issues that arise within their communities.  The project aims to focus on creating an understanding and acceptance of religious and cultural diversity, whilst also looking at how these issues can drive anti-social behaviour which has a direct impact upon all who live within the community.

The core objectives of the programme will be channelled through digital story making.  This process will help develop confidence and self-esteem of all involved and allows them to build trust, friendships and share communities.  The programme aims to build integration throughout communities whilst also help develop creative transferable IT and facilitation skills, which will strengthen employability potential.

True Spirit of Sport Seminar

5th March 2012 at 7.00pm in the Northwest Regional College, Derry/Londonderry, Lecture Theatre, Northland Building.

Time IVA Change Border - Region Alcohol Project

Evidence suggests that the most effective way of dealing with alcohol issues is through strategic, multi-disciplinary action involving statutory, business and voluntary sectors. To tackle the current alcohol culture and the impact of harmful alcohol use on society the North West Alcohol Forum Ltd. (Letterkenny), Derry Healthy Cities, the Civic Alcohol Forum (Derry) the DHSSPS and the DoHC gave CAWT their support to make a successful application to the EU INTERREG IVA programme to develop a community mobilisation project that would support a process of cultural change on alcohol utilising the skills, leadership and expertise of existing agencies in all sectors.

Website: www.cawt.com/alcohol

While the majority of people enjoy alcohol in a moderate and responsible way, misuse of alcohol has become a serious risk to public health. Alcohol related offences increased by 30% between 2003 and 2007 and far outweighed illegal drug related offences by 76,822 to 7,636 in 2003. Alcohol is a contributory factor in 34% of Domestic violence cases, 46% of all Homicide perpetrators, 44% cases of interpersonal harm & a Contributory factor in Suicide (Source: Alcohol Action Ireland)

In 2005/09, Alcohol Related Traffic accidents =1515, Killed = 108, serious injuries = 572, other injuries = 2048. In 2008/09, Alcohol related crime = 6299, criminal damage =1152 offences against the person = 4247, Sexual offences = 101, theft = 327, offences against the state = 99 (Source: www.psni.police.uk)

This dramatic increase in alcohol related harms and its negative impact on health, family life and public order has prompted a variety of organisations to come together to develop The Time IVA Change Border Region Alcohol Project.

Disability Action needs your help

Hello everybody – please take a few minutes to read this message and pass it on – we want to get as many responses to this questionnaire as possible and the people that you work with or come into contact with may have an opinion they want to express.

We want to try to identify what factors influence a disabled person’s choice of a home.  This will include certain accessibility features dependant upon a person’s needs but there are many other factors which influence where someone wants to live and we want to capture those too.

In the first instance this is information that we can use to help the Northern Ireland Housing Executive to shape a new register of accessible/adapted housing, but it’s also information that policy makers should be made aware of – that there are other factors equally or more important to disabled people than the access inside their house.

There are only 5 questions to answer and it should only take a few minutes – but we will welcome as much information as you have time to share.  The survey is on survey-monkey at the following link:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/accessiblehousingregister

It is also on the Disability Action web-site at:

http://www.disabilityaction.org/news/item/491/disability-action-wants-your-opinion-on-what-makes-a-house-accessible/

It is available in alternate formats or to complete over the telephone by contacting Janice Maxwell at Disability Action in Belfast on:

Petition to save Prehen Woods gathers momentum

The petition calls on the Minister, Alex Attwood to overturn a Planning Service decision which has granted permission for a housing development at Prehen Woods. The petition also calls on the minister to set up an independent inquiry into how the Planning Service could have granted this permission to build on the site of one of the last tracts of ancient woodland in Northern Ireland which has Nature Reserve status and a full tree preservation order.

The wood is the habitat of one of the last colonies of the Red Squirrel; other creatures who use the wood include Long-Eared Owls, protected species of Bats, Badgers who are protected under the Wildlife Act, a wide range of Butterflies and fungi, some of which are classified as Red Alert species etc.....
