£10 million scheme to tackle alcohol misuse in Northern Ireland
Impact of Alcohol is a £10 million programme launched by Big Lottery Fund in December 2010, which aims to reduce the harm caused to people, families and communities in Northern Ireland directly affected by alcohol misuse.
The programme will tackle the diverse range of issues that have resulted from alcohol misuse including physical and mental health problems, accidents and violence, debt and poverty, family issues particularly involving children and young people, and pre and post-natal harm.
The funding will be delivered in two ways. A budget of £3 million is available for Northern Ireland-wide projects developed and delivered by voluntary and community sector organisations. The Big Lottery Fund is also making £7 million available to the five Northern Ireland Health and Social Care Trusts to work with voluntary and community sector organisations in their areas.
Frank Hewitt, Big Lottery Fund NI Chair, outlined the vision behind the Impact of Alcohol programme. “Northern Ireland has a higher proportion of adults who exceed their recommended daily limit for alcohol than in the rest of the UK, and alcohol related deaths in Northern Ireland are higher for both men and women,” he said. “The Big Lottery Fund wants to work with the Health and Social Care Trusts and the Public Health Agency in Northern Ireland to ensure that we build on existing experience and expertise in this area and use this funding to tackle the issues caused by alcohol misuse both regionally and locally in Northern Ireland.”

Free Workshop on Accessing Data and Research Relating to Men's Work, Belfast
One of the biggest difficulties facing men’s work is the lack of good quality research, evidence and data. Nevertheless, in times of financial cutbacks, providing solid evidence of need is even more crucial.
The Man Matters project has teamed up with ARK to help to address the gaps identified, and a free workshop (supported by the Big Lottery Fund) has been planned for Tuesday 15th February 2011, 10.00am - 1.00pm, in Belfast. This will focus upon: "Accessing and Collecting Data: How and Why", and will identify a range of online data sources relevant to work with men as well as focus upon the advantages and disadvantages of different methods of collecting data. The seminar will be practically orientated, and no previous knowledge of research methods is required.
To book a place, ring Michael Glover on 02890 329718, or email michael.glover@wea-ni.com with your contact details, putting ‘Research Workshop’ in the subject line. Alternatively, visit www.mhfi.org/researchseminar2011.pdf for more details on this event.
Due to the nature of this workshop, places are very limited. Therefore, early booking is advised. |
