Derry DPP Notice of Public Themed Meeting
Thursday, 14th April 2011, 7.00pm, Saint Canice’s Church Hall, (beside Eglinton Health Centre), Eglinton Village.
At this themed DPP meeting the importance of community safety will be discussed. Presentations will also be given by various agencies, including the PSNI, involved in community safety.
Members of the public are welcome to attend all Public Meetings of the DPP, which will offer the opportunity to observe the PSNI Area Commander's response to questions posed by DPP Members. The Area Commander’s 9 month report will be made available if members of the public wish to discuss the report. The meeting will also provide a platform for local people to present their views on policing within the district specifically in relation to community safety, fear of crime and tackling anti-social behaviour.
Members of the public will have the opportunity to ask questions of the Area Commander, his officers and those agencies giving presentations, through the Chairperson of the DPP. You can attend the meeting and pose the question in person to the Area Commander and those agencies giving presentations, alternatively you may choose to ask a Member of the DPP to raise an issue or ask a question on your behalf

Critical Cross Border Conversations Seminar
The CWC Harnessing Equality for Lasting Peace (HELP) project and Community Dialogue in conjunction with the North West Community Network are hosting a seminar entitled Critical Cross Border Conversations on Thursday 14th April in, The Ráth Mór Centre, Bligh’s Lane, Derry/Londonderry, commencing at 9.30 am.
Guest Speaker: Dr. Chris Mc Inerney, University of Limerick
Discussion: How can community organisations foster better cross border co-operation in the North West region? Is there a need to develop coherent structures in the North West that will support collective positioning and lobbying on a cross-border basis and why? How could this add value to the work of social inclusion, peace building, equality and reconciliation in the Border region?

Chris McInerney: Chris McInerney is a post doctoral researcher in governance, development and social inclusion at the University of Limerick. Chris has previously worked for the United Nations Development Programme in East Timor, as national co-ordinator of the Community Workers Co-operative and as a project officer for Southern Africa with Trocaire. Half day free training course - Equality and Good Relations Training
Derry City Council Community Relations Officers have teamed up with the Equality Commission to offer the following course for free:
Course: Equality and Good Relations Refresher (Half day non-accredited). Date: Friday 15th April 2011 Time: 9.15am – 1.30pm (Includes light lunch) Venue: St.Columb’s Park House, Limavady Road, Derry~Londonderry. Cost: Free (funded by District Council’s CR Programme – OFMDFM) Registration: In advance by registration form (attached)
This course is designed to help you think about equality and good relations - how it relates to your work, to your services, to the whole community and to your family and friends. It is designed specifically for staff, volunteers and committee members in the community and voluntary sector.
Course content: Introduction to Good Relations in the local context. Reflective / Interactive activity reflecting on prejudice awareness. Equality law “made easy” - looking at equality rights for everyone Equality and service providers – looking at the protections, responsibilities and maximising your equality efforts in funding applications. Sharing equality with your customers
Places are offered on a ‘first come, first served basis’ by registration using the attached form. Names, contact details and any special requirements must be provided to confirm a booking. Places are prioritised to those living or working in the Derry City Council area and there are a maximum of 4 places per group. All participants will receive a certificate of attendance. Platform for Change Election Hustings, 6th - 18th April
Platform for Change is holding a series of hustings to facilitate dialogue between candidates and the wider public in the run-up to the Assembly elections. A panel of speakers from the various political parties will be invited to debate questions and comments from the floor at each of the events.
We believe that the pre-election campaign should be focused on substantive policy issues in areas such as social inclusion, sustainable development, and a shared future. Our hustings are open to everyone – there is no need to register for any of the events. We also invite you to submit comments and questions in advance to contact@platformforchange.net

Grant Tracker Meet the Funders travels West of the Bann
NICVA, in conjunction with Strabane District Council, has organised a GrantTracker Meet the Funders event to take place in the Alley Theatre in Strabane from 4.00pm to 6.00pm on Tuesday 12 April 2011.
Drop in anytime between 4 and 6 but please do not arrive without having registered first.
NICVA is pleased to announce the participation of a wide range of funding bodies and social finance organisations that fund voluntary and community groups in Northern Ireland. This is an excellent opportunity for members of voluntary and community groups to gather information from the funder and also to talk to funders on a one to one basis.

Job opportunities with North West Alcohol Forum
NW Alcohol Forum Ltd, as a partner in the above project, have 2 vacancies for committed and experienced individuals interested in working at the forefront of community based responses to alcohol related harm. The successful candidates will join an existing team engaged in the development and implementation of Alcohol Action Plans that support community-based projects and facilitate interagency action.
Post 1 – Community Mobilisation Officer - €33,000- €35,000 p.a.
The Mobilisation Officer will play a key role in developing awareness of & response to a wide range of alcohol related issues as part of a much wider border region alcohol project. Applicants must have a recognised 3rd level qualification & three years recent paid experience of successfully managing health related projects at middle management level in an NGO, Private or Public Sector body, Or, Five years experience of successfully managing and delivering community based projects in a health related area. Candidates will be self-motivated with excellent networking, facilitation and organisational skills and ability to work with external organisations at several levels. Proven experience of community development, partnerships, inclusion, equality and mobilisation processes are central to the role.
Post 2 – Administration Officer - €22,000- €24,000 p.a.
The Administration Officer will play a central support role to this project. Applicants will have a proven track record in Clerical/Administrative work and must be comfortable working on their own initiative as well as supporting a team. Experience of financial management and access to transport are needed. Applicants will be comfortable engaging with the public and will be committed to ensuring excellence in their work.
Both of the above full time posts are required for 1 year initially and are based in Letterkenny.

Irish Peace Centres Call for Panel of Facilitators
Irish Peace Centres is updating its facilitators list once again. This is to reflect the expanding nature of the work we do. The Irish Peace Centres is a regional project, led by Co-operation Ireland in partnership with the Corrymeela Community and the Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation.
The Irish Peace Centres wishes to recruit the following: Panel of Facilitators: The consortium welcome requests from individuals/groups to be included on a Panel of Facilitators with proven ability in at least one of the following within a Peace and Reconciliation framework: Intercommunity work, experiential learning, working with the refugee/asylum community, Peace and Reconciliation with an emphasis on focus groups, nature-based activities, the use of the arts, faith groups, peace and conflict training, gender, accredited training, inter-generational, youth, deep dialogue.

FREE Communications / Media Training Course
Does your group communicate effectively? Do you get publicity for the work that you do? Why not take part in a practical hands-on communications course that will teach you teach you all you need to know about getting your message across?
Derry City Council is offering groups the opportunity to avail of a FREE training course that will give you the skills to deal with media, and all aspects of communication. Delivered by former Radio Foyle presenter Paul McFadden and former Head of News Eimear O’Callaghan, you will learn how to use the media to promote the work of your organisation - how to write a press release, how to prepare for a radio interview, react under pressure and enjoy the experience!
It will take place on Tuesday 12th April, 9.30am – 4.30pm in the Verbal Arts Centre. The Workers’ Educational Association under the Learning Age Project is offering a new course to the public aged 50+ who may be thinking of retirement or who may be facing redundancy due to the down turn. The “Transitions” Pre-Retirement Course” encourages participants to consider their options when approaching retirement and also provides up to date information and signposting to relevant support agencies.
The aim of the programme is to consider the changes that take place at retirement and how they can be successfully managed including the following: The challenge of retirement: facing the changes in your life when you retire Health in retirement Finance in retirement The World: towards a more active involvement in the community Review: the final development of individual retirement plans.
The course runs over six sessions on Saturday mornings to enable those who are still working but may be planning for retirement to attend. This course is offered free of charge and is run under the WEA Learning Age Project funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies.
The course commences from 9.30am – 1.00pm on Saturday 2 April and will run 2 April, 9 April, 16 April, 30 April, 7 May and 14 May at The Verbal Arts Centre in Bishop Street, Derry/Londonderry

Interested in growing living sculptures, flowers and vegetables in an environmental community garden?
Eden Place Arts Centre in association with Floral Artist Hayley Doman is now accepting names of individuals, families and community groups in the Bogside area who would be interested in this eleven week programme.
Through this project you will learn: - Planting and sowing techniques - Recycling and composting - Decorative labelling of plants - How to make bird boxes - Weeding and maintaining your flowers and vegetables - How to make decorative wind chimes - Creating sculptures from natural items in handmade and decorated containers.
Each group will create a communal garden box to bring the beauty of the natural world to life at the front of Pilot’s Row Community Centre.
This project is free of charge and will take place on Wednesdays from 4.30pm-6.30pm

Kilcranny House would like to invite you to consider dedicating / sponsoring a tree in our new planting, The Cranagh, behind our Accommodation Block.
We are planting out a mix of Oak, Ash, Rowan, Cherry and Birch over the next three weekends and we are mapping out where each tree is planted.
We would like to enable our friends, colleagues and members of the community to dedicate each tree and to provide for its care and maintenance over the first few fragile years of its life.
