Trusthouse Charitable Foundation's Rural Issues programme is intended to assist local charities and not-for-profit organisations working in areas of deprivation where there is a population under 10,000. It is interested in projects such as the following: - Buddying and contact networks for young disabled people mentoring schemes for young people. - Transport and contact schemes for the elderly, disabled or disadvantaged. - Work skills training schemes especially those promoting local employment. - Community centres and village halls which can demonstrate a) how they contribute to fostering a sense of community and b) how their activities address local issues (e.g. isolation, anti-social behaviour, access to advice and information). - Support for those with drug/alcohol misuse problems, mental health issues, homelessness, credit worries or other difficulties which are often hidden due to the rural nature of the area.
This is not an exhaustive list, and Trusthouse welcomes enquiries for other projects. Grants of less than 10,000 can be requested for running costs, salaries and overheads (all to cover 6 months' costs only), while requests for one-off capital costs can be made for up to 30,000.
The Grants Committee meets 4 times a year in January, April, July and October. Applications need to be in at least eight weeks before the start of the month in which a Committee meeting is held to have a chance to being included on the agenda.

The Guardian Charity Awards seeks to recognise and encourage charities making an outstanding and valuable contribution to social welfare in the community. The awards are 6,000 from Sainsbury's, and a brand new PC from smartchange.org, for each of the five winners.
For the past 18 years, the Guardian Charity Awards have set out to showcase best practice among small and medium-sized charities and help them win the profile and funding they need to move forward. To the big players, the message is: sorry, this is one set of awards you cannot enter. Smaller charities are too often overshadowed by the big players, the premier league. Even though small is very often beautiful in terms of innovation, flexibility and reach into communities, it's invariably the multi-million-pound household names of the voluntary sector that grab the limelight.
The Guardian Charity Awards seek to redress that. For 16 years, they have showcased excellence among small and medium-sized charities and given a much-needed boost to organisations struggling to get profile and funding to enable them to move forward. The awards are aimed at charities delivering practical solutions to present-day problems. So long as the objective of your charity is improving social wellbeing in its broadest sense, and provided other entry criteria are met, nothing is ruled out.
Complete the application form available from the website. No additional material should be sent with your entry initially.
A limit of three promotional items may be sent should your application be longlisted. The Guardian and its advisers may request additional information if necessary to meet the judges' criteria. All material is generally nonreturnable.

Pre-Budget consultation event for NICVA Members
The Northern Ireland Executive is due to issue its next budget for public consultation at the end of October, but NICVA believes that the time to influence it is now.
10 August 2010 - 11:00am - 1:00pm Location: NICVA, 61 Duncairn Gardens, Belfast BT15 2GB View location map - Google Maps
With Northern Ireland expecting to lose over 1.2 billion over four years this is a crucial budget for the Executive and for voluntary and community organisations right across Northern Ireland. NICVA believes that the time for effectively influencing decisions is during the months leading up to the publication of the consultation document. We know that government departments are already analysing their budgets and considering departmental priorities.
At this Vital Links seminar for NICVA members on Tuesday 10 August from 11.00am - 1.00pm, top officials from the Department of Finance and Personnel will outline the current state of play regarding public expenditure and explain the process for developing the budget.
Please note that this is an event for voluntary and community organisations only. To confirm your attendance, please contact Cathy Breslin on 028 9087 7777 or email: Cathy.Breslin@nicva.org |

Community Response not Community Intimidation
Community Response has evolved as a proactive, positive response regarding the issue of drug and alcohol use within our communities. Our movement invites people from all religious/political backgrounds and walks of life to join us in finding a compassionate solution to perceived anti-social behaviour and the effect this has on society as a whole. Community Response held its first meeting on Friday 9th June with youth leaders, experts in drug and alcohol rehabilitation and concerned citizens in attendance. The main points outlined at this meeting were;
- A whole-community approach needs to be taken to dealing with the problem of drug and alcohol misuse. - The wider city needs more support services such as detox units for those with drug/alcohol problems. - Young people need support rather than militant tactics to enable them to be safe. - Our approach needs to be holistic and addresses the reasons behind drug and alcohol misuse, such as economic hopelessness and low self-esteem. - Young people need a safe place to socialise whereby they can escape the structures of everyday life.
We call for an end to intimidations and invite those involved in punishment attacks to come forward so that we can work together to find a non-violent solution to this problem. We recognise the interest of some paramilitary groups in keeping communities drug-free. We also feel that many of those who have been subject to intimidations are caught in a web of drug use and it is only through stronger community and health services support that we can eradicate this problem.
Community Response will be having its second meeting at 7.30pm on Wednesday 28th July (TONIGHT) at The Junction, Bishop Street (opposite Henderson Music). We invite all community/youth workers and concerned citizens to join us in formulating a plan of action to address this issue. |

Community Arts Forum is carrying out a survey of community arts in the region which the community arts sector will be able to use as a lobbying tool.
CAF is asking groups to complete a short questionnaire (no more than 10 minutes) asking for information. This will help to build up a picture of community arts across the region. In addition, CAF will be asking certain groups to identify how community arts helps to address four government priorities across the 18 Westminster constituencies: Health / Education / The economy / Social inclusion
With your help, this will be a strong document, indicating the number of participants, organisations, employees and volunteers involved in community arts. It will also make a strong case for how community arts can help government achieve its objectives. It will be the first document of its kind in the region and will raise the profile of the work we do. This will be particularly important in the run up to the forthcoming comprehensive spend review, which will be dealing with anticipated cuts of 30%. A strong report will help to make a case for the work and impact of the community arts sector and hopefully make it harder to make cuts.
Please complete the survey now, or at your earliest convenience at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/nicommunityarts |
