Northern Ireland Credit Unions to be regulated by FSA.

Into the West Group – Railway Petition

Following a public meeting in City Hotel on Wednesday evening last of the Into the West Group, it was decided to gather a petition to have our section of railway upgraded/relaid in time for 2013 City of Culture so that our visitors have another means of access to our city and area.

There are great numbers of people who use the railway to get to work in Coleraine, Ballymena, Ballymoney not to mention Belfast, not to mention the students/lecturers travelling to college in Coleraine and Belfast.  Representatives from these groups were at the meeting making their voices heard.  During our winter snow these people greatly appreciated this mode of transport as opposed to the dangerous journey by road! People from Donegal also attended the meeting..... they too use the railway.  As all the users have said they can relax, read, work, even sleep on the train.

As our population ages and more people are for various reasons unable to drive, this is a preferred mode of transport.

Please print off the attached Petition and get your friends/colleagues/relations to sign it as soon as possible and return to Into The West by contacting the phone number quoted on the petition.  You can also forward this to anyone you think might support this endeavour.  If the railway is not upgraded/relaid the next step is closure and we don't want that to happen.

So, please gather up as many signatures as possible.

Winter Fuel Allowance cut

FACT - This year, the UK Government has decided to:

Cut the Winter fuel payment for people aged between 60 and 80 by £50

Cut the Winter fuel payment for people aged over 80 by £100

Age Sector Platform believes that this is a shocking decision and that the Government needs to do more to help tackle the scandal of fuel poverty, not less.

We have to send a clear message that the decision to reduce the help to older people in heating their homes is wrong and dangerous.

We need older people in Northern Ireland to make their voice heard on this critical matter and we ask you to support the campaign by signing our petition.

To request a postcard or to find out more http://www.agesectorplatform.org/index.php/fight-the-fuel-cut/ or phone 028 9031 2089.

To request a postcard In Derry/Londonderry you can contact Joanna Boyd: Joanna.boyd@derrycity.gov.uk

Inside Out AGM

Inside Out will be holding it's AGM on Tuesday 18 October at 6.30pm in The Diamond Centre, Claudy.  This will present an opportunity to hear about the positive work that we are doing in and around the North West.  We are currently running a number of programmes including Network Earth: Global Citizen for the 21st Century, an accredited Global Education Programme for young people, Claudy Intergenerational Project, The 'Why?' Project - a bi-lateral youth democracy project with Germany, The (upcoming) PoP (Paths of Participation) International Youth Assembly involving young people from Slovenia, Austria, Germany and Finland and our LID (Leadership through Intercultural Dialogue) Project which provides international opportunities for young people, young leaders and youth workers.

Like many organisations, we are also looking to increase membership of our Management Committee and the AGM presents an opportunity to recruit new members.  Commitment is 6 meetings per year and on occasion where necessary a number of additional meetings but normally no greater than 15-20 hours per year.

Inside Out is of course dependent on an active management committee and whilst we have and have had a positive committee over the last two years it's necessary and vital to ensure that we are recruiting new people on an on-going basis.  With this in mind we would appreciate your taking time to consider being part of our committee.  We are looking for people skills across a range of areas.  If you are interested in attending and/or putting yourself forward for membership can you contact me direct at my e-mail thekingisalive@hotmail.com.

Everyone is welcome to the AGM - please let me know if you intend to come along so as to finalize numbers.

Local Youth Worker, Fergal Barr, is happy to announce publication of his new book:

'The Yet Unknown Little Brown Book - A collection of poems'.  The book along with extract is available at http://www.xlibrispublishing.co.uk/bookstore/bookdisplay.aspx?bookid=301541 . The book can also be purchased on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=fergal+baar

“Japanese Autumn Festival 2011 “Never Give Up! Fukushima

The Japanese community in the North West is organizing a fundraising event on October 8th at the Craft Village in Derry/ Londonderry, to raise funds for orphans in Fukushima, Japan, which was struck by the earthquake and tsunami in March this year.

Date: October 8th 2011(Sat)  Time: 11.30 am - 5 pm
Venue: the Craft Village (the Ship quay Street,  Derry/ Londonderry)
Admission: Free

The event is just around the corner but we still need a lot of (tons of!) help from you.

Please support our cause with/by:

1. Joining the event on that day (That’s the most important!)

2. Opening our FB page http://on.fb.me/nmlmLP and “like” it!

3. Circulating the information below to your contacts.

4. Why won’t you cat walk in our Kimono Fashion Show? (Irrespective of age or sex, anybody welcome!)

5. Is there anybody who’ll kindly bake cakes and scones and/ or their hand- crocheted/knitted work for our charity bazaar?

6. Do you have something which you can donate for prizes of raffle and games or we can sell at our charity bazaar (good as new clothes/bags, etc) at home?

7. Do you have any idea of shops and companies which are likely to kindly be sponsors or/ and donate prizes for raffles?

If you would kindly help our project, please make contact with:
preabsanol@gmail.com
or 077 098 94464.

Looking forward to meeting you at the Craft Village on October 8th!

This will be the very first occasion to show various aspects of Japanese culture, including the Traditional Tea Ceremony with Japanese authentic tea set, Origami workshop, Kimono (Japanese traditional dress) Fashion Show and Try-On, Taiko (Japanese drums) performance and, of course, Japanese cuisine, to the people in the North West in such a comprehensive way.

Also York Marshall, who is from Fukushima and now lives in Northern Ireland, will report what she saw in her hometown after half a year of the tragedy.

All proceeds will go to the ‘Soma Orphan Scholarship Fund’ in Fukushima, which supports children who have lost their parents, many of whom were fire fighters and emergency rescue workers who perished trying to save others.

Although almost 7 months have passed since the earthquake and tsunami occurred, more than a hundred thousand people are still displaced from their home and live in shelters or temporary houses, and no more than 50 % of rubble is cleared. A bitter winter is on the way. Come along to the Festival, enjoy the food, the fun and the entertainment, and above all, support us in helping the orphans of Fukushima.

(This event is kindly supported by SEEDS, Foyle Multicultural Forum, The Friendship Club, the Greater Shantallow Community Arts and The Great Britain Kawakawa Foundation (As of September 15th). (Also we appreciate the Inner City Trust and the Tower Museum for their cooperation.)

The next meeting of the Society will be on Monday 3rd October at 7pm in the first floor Lecture Room at Central Library.

Richard Doherty is one of the foremost military historians in the country and has authored in the region of twenty books on both Irish and British military history. He is a highly respected authority in his field and this will be an opportunity to find out how to research those elusive war-time ancestors.
