£15m Lottery Programme to make better use of NI Community Space

The Big Lottery Fund is looking for an award partner to deliver a multi-million pound programme that will bring communities in Northern Ireland together by making better use of local spaces and places.

The largest distributor of Lottery good cause funding today launched the £15 million Space and Place programme which will support projects that make better use of new and existing outdoor and indoor spaces in local communities, particularly those that are not used enough, are overgrown and neglected, or are seen as only for use by certain groups.

The programme could fund a project to create a community garden and allotments in the grounds of a community venue, or a project to turn a derelict area into a mini park with cycle paths and walkways where people can meet and enjoy their local spaces and places.

The Big Lottery Fund wants to appoint an award partner from the voluntary and community sector to run the programmes grant scheme and make grants of £50,000 - £1 million to projects that create safe spaces where people of all ages in the community can meet and take part in activities that improve their health and education.

Organisations interested in applying to be an award partner for this programme must complete an Expression of Interest form and submit it to the Big Lottery Fund by noon 21 March 2011.

To find out more about applying to be an award partner that will deliver the Space and Place programme, visit www.biglotteryfund.org.uk; or contact the Big Lottery Fund NI Information Team at enquiries.ni@biglotteryfund.org.uk or on 028 9055 1455.

Using National Occupational Standards to build Community Development practice

The Community Work Education and Training Network in Northern Ireland (CWETN) is hoping to run a series of workshops in the next few months for people who use community development approaches in their work.  In order to make the workshops as relevant as possible to your work, CWETN would like to hear your views on what areas of practice you would like the workshops to focus on.

Below is an on-line survey (it’s really short!) that we would like to invite you to complete so that we can gear the workshops to the areas that you are most interested in.  Please click on the link below and complete the survey.  There are only 5 questions and it will only take about 2 minutes!!

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CMVZTZ2

The workshops will look at how to use the Community Development National Occupational Standards 2009 to inform and enhance different areas of community development practice.   They will be very practical and use hands on examples of how the CDNOS can be used in areas such as:

- Action planning

- Volunteer/Staff recruitment

- Managing staff

- Training and development

- Evaluation and reflection

Many thanks for your time and input!

“A Man’s World” Awareness event

Derry City Council would like to extend an invitation to you and/or a representative from your organisation to attend an awareness event, which is being hosted by Derry City Council in association with Men’s Action Network on Wednesday 02 February 2011 at 10am in the Guildhall, Derry.

Men make up almost half the population in Northern Ireland (49.1% approximately) however their issues largely go unheard unless it is to highlight their shortcomings.  Attention tends to focus negatively on men’s actions and behaviours as opposed to highlighting their issues regarding their thoughts, feelings, attitudes or values.

The objectives of today’s event include focusing on men’s and boy’s health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models.  It is an occasion to highlight discrimination against men and boys and to celebrate their achievements and contributions, in particular for their contributions to community, family, marriage, and child care.

This occasion also provides attendees with the opportunity to become acquainted with the support mechanisms that are available to them in the form of the local groups and organisations who operate in this field.

A light buffet lunch will be provided after the event and this will allow you the opportunity to network with the representative groups and other invited guests.  Full details of the format for the event are attached for your information.

If you are able to attend the event please complete and return the attached response form.
