Free Educational Workshops for Schools and Groups
Following the live productions of The Playhouse Theatre of Witness programme we can now announce the launch of our Theatre of Witness Education Programme. The programme funded by Special European Unions Programme Board and The Department of Foreign Affairs and will offer a number of free experiential workshops to schools, community groups, women’s group and youth groups across the country. The Playhouse Theatre of Witness is a form of Theatre which aims to give voice to people whose voices remain unheard to wider society. The stories shared are told by the people themselves so that audiences can collectively bear witness to issues of suffering, redemption and social justice.
In 2009, we produced a production named “We Carried Your Secrets”. This Production worked with fathers from different backgrounds who were on the frontlines during the conflict and those from the younger generation who were left with questions following this legacy. This work was followed by the production “I Once Knew a Girl” which shed light on the lives of 6 women who were not only affected by the conflict but also by resulting social issues.
“ Every child across the country should see this work” -audience member

Derry City Council is offering a free opportunity to participate in the ‘Epilogues’ programme during June 2011. ‘Epilogues’ is a conflict transformation programme, which has been developed by Gaslight Productions. (www.epilogues.net)
The programme consists of eight modules exploring: Violence, Loss, Revenge, Forgiveness, Justice and Human Rights. Within inclusive workshops, where every view is respected but equally where every view can be challenged, ‘epilogues’ will explore the conflict through the perspectives of people who were part of it, or suffered as a result of it, and found themselves compelled to react to circumstances unfolding around them with what perspective they had at the time. It should be noted that this programme is very challenging, hard hitting and can be emotional for the participants.
If you are interested in taking part in the programme, or want to know more about it please contact me for further information and an application form (don’t worry it’s very short). Potential participants will be asked to come along to a taster session in the Nerve Centre on Monday 23rd May 2011 at 1pm. (Lunch will be provided). If you are still interested, the course will be delivered on the following four dates - 7th June, 10th June, 14th and 17th June. Participants must be in a position to commit to attending on all four days – so put the dates in your diary now if you are interested.
The course is suitable for adults who are community and voluntary sector staff or volunteers; teachers of history, politics, citizenship; people working with those impacted by conflict; people wanting to understand more about the legacy of ‘The Troubles’; individuals who are interested in the topics.

Tree Planting with Kilcranny House
Kilcranny House join forces with the Woodland Trust to plant 420 trees at Coleraine's Peace & Reconciliation centre.
Where - Kilcranny House, 21 Cranagh Road, Coleraine. (off Castlerock Road) When: 24th - 27th March 2011 31st March - 3rd April 2011 7th - 10th April 2011
Kilcranny House in Coleraine are delighted to to be part of the national tree planting campaign to double the number of native trees and woods in the UK by planting 420 free trees from the Woodland Trust.
Over 1,000 applications were received by the Woodland Trust for free community tree packs this spring and, as a result, more than 200,000 trees will be planted. Hundreds of communities across the UK will celebrate with tree planting events and more are encouraged to register for a free tree pack for autumn 2011 or spring 2012 from the Trust.
Conn Mulvenna, Coordinator said: "Tree planting is a fun way for us to do something lasting in our local area. We hope our trees will help attract wildlife and it's incredible to think that in just 5 years, our trees will be as tall as us. We'd like as many people from the community in Coleraine to come along and help us."
Victoria Hodson from the Woodland Trust added: "We have been overwhelmed by people's enthusiasm to plant trees. Communities are transforming spaces within their neighbourhoods, growing their own fruits and food, creating shelter, and providing new homes for wildlife.
Warm clothes and a pair of boots or wellies are recommended. Kilcranny will also be opening a tree-planting book, where we will record the stories of each tree being planted for our future generations. We will also offer the opportunity for groups, businesses or individuals to sponsor a tree and support its care and maintenance. We can also offer groups the opportunity to plant trees at a time more suitable for themselves by appointment
If you have queries or would like more information, contact Kilcranny House 028 70321816. |

Counting down to WWF's Earth Hour in Northern Ireland
On 26 March, at 8.30pm, the Northern Ireland skyline will be plunged into darkness as individuals, businesses and organisations join the rest of the world in switching off their lights to show they care about tackling climate change and safeguarding the natural world. Earth Hour is a reminder to us all that we only have one planet Earth. And it’s an urgent message to world leaders that we want to reduce the impact our energy system has on the planet.
Earth Hour is a fun and simple way for people to show their support for strong action on climate change and safeguarding our planet. Across Northern Ireland, schools, businesses and individuals are getting together to hold a wide range of activities, including torch-lit walks or candle-lit dinner parties. Zoe Salmon of Dancing on Ice and Blue Peter fame has signed up already and calls on the people of Northern Ireland to do the same by registering for WWF Northern Ireland’s Earth Hour at www.wwf.org.uk/earthhour
Last year, WWF’s Earth Hour became the biggest Earth Hour ever. A record 128 countries and territories joined the global display of climate action. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off. People across the world from all walks of life turned off their lights and came together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet.
This Earth Hour, people are encouraged to go beyond the hour, Geoff Nuttall, Head of WWF Northern Ireland said, “Sustain your actions beyond the hour! When the lights go back on think about what you can do to make a difference at home, in the work place or in your community.” |
