Risky Business – 1 day Practitioner Course on Sexual Health, Alcohol & Young People
If you work with young people then you are probably aware of some of them that have already tried alcohol (approx: 5% of our P7 children are already drinking weekly) and maybe some of them are already in relationships, hanging out, some may already have discovered ‘friends with benefits’. What we do know is that where young people drink alcohol, especially early on, the risk of unplanned, unsafe sex increases; the risk of non consensual sex becomes higher and the risk of pregnancy, STI’s and a range of emotionally related self and identity issues become much more prevalent.
So who is the SHAYP course for? This course is for any practitioner or volunteer who works with children and young people (or their parents) who may be using/at risk of using alcohol; and who want to explore the impact of alcohol use on young people and their emotional and sexual health & wellbeing.
Course content: - Why examine the links between alcohol & sexual behaviour – cause and effect - Current stats in NI relating to sexual behaviour and the relationship with alcohol - So how much do we know? Quiz on Myths & Facts – Sexual health & Alcohol - our favourite drug - Self & identity development through adolescence and the impact of alcohol use on this development - The Brain – how we develop and the impact of alcohol at the different stages and the long terms impact - The approaches & how to use them: Prevention, Secondary Prevention & Harm Reduction Signposting & referral
Course Date: Wednesday 2 February 2011 Time: 10.30am – 4.30pm Venue: Station Centre, Omagh.

Derry Healthy Cities youth directory/booklet
Derry Healthy Cities have secured funding to compile a youth directory/booklet to give young people information on activities that are available for them to take part in within the Derry City Council area. Research with young people has suggested that many start drinking alcohol because they believe that “there is nothing else to do” and we hope that by showing them that there are a wide variety of activities they can take part in, many free of charge, that they will be discouraged from taking part in underage drinking”.
If you would like your organisation included or can provide me with a list of organisations that come under the following: Sports, Youth Groups & Organisations, Art & Culture, Music Venues, Church & Religions, Helplines, (Lifeline, Samaritans, Teenage Pregnancies etc)., Sexual Health, Drop In Centres, Schools of Dance, Karate Clubs, Café Culture, Communities of Interest- for e.g. Asylum youth, Gay, Bisexual etc.
The deadline for information is 11th February 2011.

'One Family In Gaza'
A Film by Jen Marlowe 8pm, Wednesday 26th January, The Nerve Centre
This Wednesday as part of a number of events to mark the 39th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday, Foyle Ethical Investment Campaign (FEIC) are screening 'One Family In Gaza', a film that is simultaneously heartbreaking and uplifting. It’s the latest offering from peace activist and film maker Jen Marlowe. FEIC are particularly delighted that Jen will be present at the screening to answer questions about the wider context and why she was moved to tell this particular story.
Just months after the Israeli assault that killed 1,390 Palestinians, Jen visited Gaza. Among dozens of painful stories she heard, one family stood out for her. She spent several days with Kamal and Wafaa Awajah, playing with their children, sleeping in the tent they were living in, and filming their story. Wafaa described the execution of their son, Ibrahim. As she spoke, her children played on the rubble of their destroyed home. Kamal talked about struggling to help his kids heal from trauma. Palestinians in Gaza are depicted either as violent terrorists or as helpless victims. The Awajah family challenges both portrayals. Through one family’s story, the larger tragedy of Gaza is exposed, and the courage and resilience of its people shines through.
For more information or to purchase a DVD or organize a screening, please contact donkeysaddle@gmail.com
FEIC is a non party affiliated group of citizens, academics, and human rights activists who are committed to participative democracy and working to ensure that the peace process extends into the ethics of how our city-region shapes its local economy so that our peace is not built at the expense of the peace of others across the globe. |
