Community Foundation for NI small grants - priorities include community arts

The Community Foundation for Northern Ireland has changed its grant-making processes and now has one-point of entry to its various grant programmes through an online application.
In 2009-10, the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland dispensed £1.1 million in grants to community and voluntary organisations across Northern Ireland.

The foundation manages funding from a variety of sources enabling community organisations to make a real difference in people’s lives.
They will from now on link and match your application to the most appropriate fund behind the scenes - "You need not worry about which fund is right for you."

Applications to their grant programmes should be made online.

Grants are available up to £5,000 however the greater number of applications will not exceed £1,500. Organisations with an annual income over £250,000 cannot apply.

Applicants are encouraged to check the current funding priorities of the Foundation via their website and submit a single application for funding where they feel the priorities of the Foundation’s grant-making match their work plan for the year. Priorities include community arts.

The Foundation’s current priority funding areas include:
• Projects that support self-help amongst minority groups affected by social need
• Projects that will increase inclusive and resilient communities
• Community environmental initiatives
• Work that enhances active aging
• Initiatives that address rural isolation
• Projects that promote health and well-being by addressing specific issues
• Community arts that promote participation
• Sport as a vehicle for social inclusion
• Projects that work to enhance the involvement of marginalised groups of young people

How to Apply
Those seeking grant funding from the Foundation should apply using the online application process. The application form has Part A and Part B and can be accessed on the Foundation’s website: www.communityfoundationni.org

Interested in Becoming a Roots Of Empathy Instructor?

Roots of Empathy is a social and emotional literacy programme for primary aged children involving a local parent and baby who visit a classroom nine times over the school year.  Guided by a trained instructor, children learn to understand their emotional life by observing the baby.  Between October and June, the instructor facilitates 18 additional lessons to compliment the baby’s visits. 27 school visits across one school year.

Roots of Empathy was successfully piloted in 14 Donegal primary schools last year by HSE Health Promotion, funded by Special EU Programmes Body through the Donegal Peace III Partnership. This year we hope to expand to around 25 schools in Donegal for 2011 – 2012 and will therefore need to train 10 new instructors.

Although they may be useful and relevant, there are no formal educational requirements.  However, we are looking for people with an appropriate background in terms of working with children and in terms of compatible values.  Our existing instructors have backgrounds in education, social work, and the health sector.

The time commitment is approximately 3 hours per week - an hour’s preparation, an hour at the school each week and up to an hour travel.

Ideally instructors will be allocated to schools near to where they live or work.

We provide a full 3 day training package and mentoring support which leads to certification by the Roots Of Empathy, Canada. Training will be delivered in Letterkenny on Monday 19th, Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st September, instructors MUST be available to attend all three days of the training. There is no cost for the training, and all materials for the programme will be made available to instructors. A further one day mid-year training will be provided to instructors.

Roots of Empathy instructors are not paid, nor can we offer remuneration of expenses, the position is either entirely voluntary or, as has been the case this year, the person's employer has agreed to donate the person's time as a contribution in kind.

The rewards are significant in terms of a quality training/mentoring package, which we pay for, and in terms of experience, professional development and personal satisfaction from delivery of the programme.

If you are interested in becoming a Roots of Empathy instructor or you would like further information on the programme please call Seana Hume on 074 9104694 or email seana.hume@hse.ie before Friday 9th September 2011.

Have Your Say on Draft Strategic Framework for Community Development for NI

Rural Community Network (RCN) is working closely with other organisations in developing a new Strategic Framework for Community Development for NI.  This Framework will attempt to reflect the views and interests of everyone involved in community development practice.  RCN facilitated a number of workshops in June 2011 across Northern Ireland.  This sought the views of a range of people involved in community development practice (paid & unpaid) and has helped inform the development of a draft Framework.

RCN is now hosting a morning event on Wednesday 5th October at Lough Neagh Discovery Centre, Oxford Island, Craigavon (exact times to be confirmed and circulated).  This event is free of charge and lunch will be provided.

This will be an opportunity to discuss the draft Framework and provide feedback to help shape it further.  Please register your interest in this event by contacting Sarah Christie at RCN on 028 86766670 or email sarah@ruralcommunitynetwork.org.

The draft Framework will be widely circulated prior to this event and to all who attended the initial workshops.

If you are unable to attend this event, but would like to respond to the draft Framework, please contact Fergal O’Donnell at RCN or email fergal@ruralcommunitynetwork.org . Specific details for a consultation period during September/October will follow shortly.  Please note that the draft will not be available until approximately mid September 2011.

This initiative is supported by Building Change Trust.

Planning Campaign - fill in our questionnaire

If you have a story to tell about the planning system in Northern Ireland, then please fill in our questionnaire.  If you would rather fill it in on paper, email Fiona Joyce, or phone 028 9023 3488.

We're working in conjunction with Queen's University Belfast to collate as much data about people's experiences of the system as possible, so that we can produce a detailed report on our findings in the autumn.

We want to hear about anything you've experienced, positive or negative.

Our planning campaign will move into its second phase later in the year, when we'll be calling for reforms to the system, based partly on the results of our survey.

If you'd like to join our campaign, or just hear more about it, email Niall Bakewell, or phone 028 9089 7592

Foyle Hospice launch their Annual Male Walk/Run & Junior Boys Mini Marathon

Our 7th ‘Male Walk/Run & Junior Boys Mini Marathon’ will take place on Sunday, 25th September 2011. There are two scenic routes, a longer 5 mile route around the Peace Bridge and Foyle Bridge or a shorter route of 2 miles from Sainsbury’s Car Park to the Peace Bridge and back.  So, whatever your age and ability, you can take up the challenge whilst doing your bit to help your local hospice carry on caring.

In 2005 this event attracted 376 participants, last year we saw this number rise to 800!  With nearly 5,000 females supporting the Female Walk we are challenging local men and boys to lend their support and help us this year achieve 1,000 participants.  Get your local sports club and pubs involved, challenge your work colleagues or class mates.

All funds raised through this event play a huge part in funding the essential care and support we provide, totally free of charge, to people affected by cancer and other life limiting illnesses across the North West. As the demand for our services continues to grow each year, with your help and support, we are hoping that this year’s walk will be even bigger and more successful than ever before – this year we hope you will help us raise £30,000!

Registration could not be easier – for previous participants you will be receiving your Registration Pack in the post over the next few days.  If this is your first time simply contact the Fundraising Centre by phoning (028) 71 359 888 or by email victoria@foylehospice.com.  Alternatively you can download the Registration Form from our new website www.foylehospice.com.
