From RAG to riches?

Each year four charities are selected by students to be supported by RAG. The funds they raise over the year are split evenly between these charities. RAG (standing for Raise And Give) attends many street collections over the course of the year.

The deadline for applications is 4 February 2011, when eight charities which are considered to be the most appropriate according to RAG's criteria will be selected. These eight will then go to a vote by the student body on 1 and 2 March.

Initial criteria for considering a charity are:

- If the charity is based within Northern Ireland.

- If the money received will be used within Northern Ireland by the charity.

- If the charity receives little or no government funding.

The four chosen charities will be for the next academic year (beginning Sept 2011). Only electronic submissions are accepted.  If you'd like details on the criteria, an application form or have any queries, please email su.rag@qub.ac.uk.

Broadcast appeals on BBCNI

Sharing stories, meeting needs, changing lives….

Broadcast Appeals provide an opportunity for local charities to describe their work and make appeals for volunteers or funds. These short programmes are broadcast throughout the year on BBCNI and featured on their dedicated website – www.bbc.co.uk/niappeals. All Broadcast Appeals are produced with technical and editorial support from the BBC. They reach a large and diverse audience and contribute to wider community awareness of issues and developments within the sector.

Applications are now being invited for upcoming Broadcast Appeal slots on local television and radio. These opportunities will be available from March 2011 onwards. Applicant organisations should operate, or provide benefits for people, on a region-wide basis and have good accountability arrangements in place.  Applicants should also be able to demonstrate how they will use their Appeal opportunity and what they hope it might achieve. Broadcast Appeals are intended to reflect different types of charitable activity and support needs. They cannot be used for campaigning or lobbying purposes.

Application forms and assessment criteria for Broadcast Appeal slots are available from Sarah Majury by telephone on 028 9033 8210 or by email: sarah.majury@bbc.co.uk.  Completed application forms should be submitted no later than Monday 24 January, 2011.

Visit to North Down with the GOAL Project

In November 2010 the GOAL Project facilitated a study visit at the request of North Down Borough Councils’ Good Relations Officer, Debbie McKinney.

The visiting group comprised of community development workers and local community activists from the Bangor area. The group was very impressed by the quality and nature of the work that was being done in the areas we visited, Creggan, Gasyard Centre, Lincoln Courts and Seeds One World Centre.

North Down Borough Council have secured funding for a return visit on the 8th and 9th of February 2011 and have asked us to invite representatives from those organisations that they had visited, or met with them while they were here. This will be a further opportunity to share the experience and good practice that we have developed over the years.

The Bangor/North Down area is comprised of predominantly PUL communities into which there has been a significant ethnic minority influx over recent years. While the major communities live in single identity neighbourhoods on the outskirts of Bangor, the migrant worker community lives mainly in private rented accommodation in the urban and commercial centre. There is no real community focal point in any of the areas with the exception of the YMCA near the harbour which has become the advice and contact point for those from the ethnic minority community.

The Good Relations Officers from North Down feel that this would be a unique opportunity to build on and share our experience with the growing community sector in the area and the ethnic minority community.

I am pleased to extend an invitation to join us on this study visit and would appreciate it if you could let me know soon as possible if you could attend by emailing Jon on goalproject@rathmor.com

Free ‘Living Life to the Full’ Course

If you or someone you know are currently experiencing low mood, stress or depression Aware Defeat Depression’s Life Skills Course may be of benefit.  The course is called ‘Living Life to the Full’ and teaches important life skills and techniques for dealing with the common problems we often notice when we are feeling down or depressed.  It uses resources developed by Dr Chris Williams, Senior Lecturer in Psychological Medicine in University of Glasgow.  Dr Williams is an expert in developing many self-help resources including the well-known self-help book ‘Overcoming Depression and Low Mood – A Five Areas Approach’.

Aware has been involved in delivering these courses now for over two years and the feedback from course participants has been very positive, with most reporting that after attending a course they felt more confident, happier and better able to tackle negative and unhelpful thinking.  As a result of Aware’s experience in delivering courses to date they have been invited to deliver two courses as part of a research project with University of Glasgow and Depression Alliance, Scotland.

These courses are scheduled to take place at Aware Defeat Depression, 56 Strand Road, Derry on the following dates:

Course 1:  Commences Friday 25th February  – Finishes Friday 15th April

Artists Required

The PATHS Project (Positive Alternatives to Hatred & Sectarianism) wishes to commission an artist/s to deliver a project in conjunction with PATHS beneficiaries to design and produce three lasting public art pieces.

The art pieces will be sited in each of the participating areas and will connect each community and symbolise the impact that the PATHS Project has had for the young people involved, in relation to insights gained into the heritage and culture of other young people of different religious and ethnic backgrounds across the City.

The three sites will be Newbuildings Community Centre, Derry Travellers Support Group and Dove House Community Trust.  The works can be part of a series or individually designed for each site.

The artwork will relate therefore to the learning and the continuing relationships created between these young people and their communities and will be generated through the artist/s engagement with project beneficiaries and the wider community.

The artist/s will be required to hold consultations, workshops/focus groups with both beneficiaries and residents within each of the communities concerned to ascertain their thoughts, ideas and opinions towards the design of these public art pieces.  Through this process the artist/s will create a sense of ownership and pride in the final artwork.

The PATHS Project wishes to invite applications from competent and experienced artists, with a proven record in the delivery of public art through community engagement to undertake this project. The total budget available for the full commission inclusive of consultation, design, fabrication, insurance, transport, installation on site/s and specialist fees is £13,500 inclusive of VAT.

Update from Clubs for Young People in the North West

Soccer Coaching Day

This will take place on Saturday 26 March between 11am and 4pm at The Diamond Centre, Claudy – qualified IFA Coaches will deliver the training and will involve teams from Dungannon and North West.  We are looking to recruit 8 teams of 8 - entry is £20 per team.

Participation Research

Are you interested in finding out levels of participation in your club or group?  Would you like your club to take part in a piece of active research into participation levels within youth provision?  Clubs for Young People have secured some funding to carry out a piece of research into participation among young people in order to determine the diversity, extent and nature of youth participation in CYP member youth clubs and organisations in the North West area and the resources and support needs for further development.  There are no costs involved other than time.

Annual Insurance

We are fast approaching the end of the financial year and you may be thinking about renewing your club’s annual insurance scheme.  Before doing so perhaps you should consider insurance offered by Clubs for Young People NI.  Being a headquarter organisations Clubs for Young People are able to secure reduced premiums for registered groups.  Some clubs operating 4 nights per week have managed to secure annual insurance for as little as £160.  We can also provide mini-bus insurance.

‘Raspberry Hill Challenge’ Team Building Activity Day

Would your youth club/group be interested in taking part in a Team Building Activity Day at Raspberry Hill Activity Centre (just outside Claudy).  Clubs for Young People in partnership with Raspberry Hill are planning to host ‘The Raspberry Hill Challenge’, a team-building/initiative-exercise day for young people in March or April time (during the Easter break).

Raspberry Hill can organise a variety of custom-made initiative exercises to promote self-esteem, confidence, learning and fun.  Perhaps you fancy something different or maybe even a new location/outdoor setting for team building and/or you would like to involve your members in a challenge with young people from a range of other clubs in the North West?   Let me know, we’re looking to recruit small teams to take part.

The ‘Mediative’ Youth Club

We are planning to host a 3-hour workshop for youth work practitioners (from in and around the North West) looking at the question of ‘the restorative youth club’.  Plans for the workshop are at the initial stages but we hope to host a workshop on this subject and are compiling a list of interested parties.

The workshop will consider how we can create an environment where practice is governed or led by a commitment to a restorative ethos and thus promoting mediation practice among young people.  If you are interested in being part of this workshop please contact me.  We are looking to host this in the next 6-8 weeks.

Young Parents Project

Plans are in place to develop a project between the Young Parents project in Shepherds View and Artillery Youth Centre.  The project aims to bring young parents together with the aim of reducing isolation, building confidence, increase awareness and share experiences.  If you are interested in hearing any more about the project or are involved in with working with young parents and would be interested in becoming involved in the project don’t hesitate to contact me.

Membership of Clubs for Young People NI

In addition to the low insurance scheme mentioned above membership of Clubs for Young People provides a host of other benefits including:

- Keystone awards scheme

- Quarterly mail shot of events

- Annual Youth Sports Programme

- Access to training - leadership skills, sports and activity programme (SAP Pack)

- Access to UK events and facilities

- European and international projects

For further details do not hesitate to mail Fergal Barr at thekingisalive@hotmail.com or call me on 079 4459 5864.
