“Making Time Count” - Exploring the possibilities for Community and Voluntary Groups
To mark the European Year of Volunteering Donegal County Council is hosting a conference to highlight the potential of Time Banking to Communities and Individuals in Donegal.
Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny, Wednesday 9th March 2011, 9.15 a.m. – 3.30 p.m.
Who should Attend? All those involved with Community and Voluntary Groups including Family Resource Centre staff and management, sporting, youth, and faith based organisations and anyone interested in becoming involved in a time bank as an individual or using time banking as a methodology in their organisation. Organisations wishing to explore the potential of the time banking model as a method of sharing resources in these economically uncertain times.
What is Timebanking? Time banks are a new and exciting way for people to come together to help others and help themselves at the same time by sharing their skills. Participants "deposit" their time in the bank by giving practical help and/or support to others and are able to "withdraw" their time when they need something done themselves. Everyone's time is equally valued. There are different models of timebanking including - person to person, person - agency and agency - agency. Timebanking has the potential to strengthen communities through reciprocity.
To book your place at this exciting FREE seminar please contact Joanne Curran on (074) 9172376 or e-mail: jcurran@donegalcoco.ie Please note spaces are limited so early booking is advisable. |

Self Esteem & Confidence Boosting - 1-day Community Practitioner Course
- Community practitioners working in early years settings (in ‘parenting’ capacities/roles) - Community practitioners working with parents of young children - Parents of young children, and parents working in voluntary capacities with young children
This course is for practitioners working with & supporting parents of young children (aged 3 – 9 approximately) who want help and support in better understanding how children develop around looking at their early identity development and supporting holistic development.
It looks at what self esteem is and how it and resiliency can be developed. These have been shown to have a positive preventative impact against risk taking behaviour patterns that often occur in early adolescence (including drugs & alcohol, sexual behaviours, criminal behaviour etc), and possible ways to work positively to address this.
NB: This course does not set out to deal with overly difficult, aggressive or violent behaviours in childhood through tackling self esteem and identity issues. A separate course around ‘Working with Young People & Challenging Behaviours’ covers this area.
Course Aim: Staff and practitioners feel more confident in working with supporting parents to understand how to positively impact their child’s development through developing self esteem, self worth, self confidence, self efficacy & resilience Practitioners and parents are developed to use techniques, tools and approaches which will help them build and inculcate Self Esteem & Self Confidence, and develop resiliency in their children Parents have their own Self Esteem raised and Self Confidence built through being supported by staff/practitioners in an empathetic, focused way
Course content includes: Defining key terms such as self esteem, self confidence, self worth, self efficacy The role of both self esteem and self confidence in terms of early years development through to adolescent years – how is it developed (psychological construct models etc.) Building and nurturing Self Esteem & Self Confidence – why and how: strategies for supporting parents The role of positive reinforcement Discipline and boundaries vs. punishment – the consistent parenting approach challenge – why and how Getting help & support – for you as worker and for the parent & signposting on – other agencies & organisations to help
Date: 25 February 2011 Times: 10.30-4.30 Venue: Station Centre, Omagh

Procurement of a second-hand Portakabin – Can you help?
A community organisation based in Lurgan, the Avenue Road Community Association, is currently exploring options as to how best it can procure a Portakabin from which it can carry out its activities from. One of the options being considered by the group is the purchase of a second-hand Portakabin from a voluntary or statutory organisation that may have a portakabin that is surplus to its requirements.
Committee members have some idea of the size of portakabin it is looking for but would be open to considering any second–hand portakabin that could be adopted to accommodate a variety of community uses. Committee members are also happy to come and view any portakabin that is available for purchase.
For your information, the Avenue Road Resident Committee is one of the participants involved in Community Foundation NI’s Communities in Transition programme. If you can assist the group in its efforts to secure a portakabin, or would like to discuss further, please contact;

Foyle Stop for Tea ‘Every drop makes a difference’
In Foyle, thousands of cups of tea are enjoyed every day. Did you ever think that your daily sup could make a real difference to the lives of local vulnerable children? Children who every day are suffering from appalling violence, horrific sexual abuse and callous, cruel neglect.
NSPCC Northern Ireland are asking groups and organisations throughout Foyle to take part in Foyle Stop for Tea week, 28 February to 6 March 2011, in conjunction with the Derry News. This really is a simple way to make a big difference.
We support children and families in Foyle by providing local services such as the Foyle Children’s Resource Team which offer specialist recovery services to children directly affected by sexual abuse. Out dedicated Domestic Abuse Recovery Service supports children and parents who have lived with domestic abuse, helping them to recover from its effects. The Foyle Young Witness Service aims to make the process of giving evidence in court more understandable and less traumatic for witnesses under 18. Last year Childline Foyle base took 4,195 first time calls from children and young people who were worried about issues like bullying, sexual abuse and their parent’s misuse of drugs and alcohol.
