Dream, Hope, Believe – a gala for peace - Conversations Across the Walls
Derry, Sunday 15 May 2011
In December 2010, The Rev David Latimer of Derry’s First Presbyterian Church approached multi million selling classical artists ‘The Priests,’ he dreamt that they might perform at the gala opening of his newly renovated church on Derry’s walls. David also suggested that the concert might just be the beginning of something much bigger, an idea that he calls “Conversations Across the Walls”; famous personalities from either side of our great divide in candid conversations that might inspire the rest of us to do the same. After our initial meeting this dream became an imperative. The Priests said yes, then…
This historic concert and series of conversations is unprecedented and is about sending a message; that WE can EACH make a difference. It’s about reaching out to those who are still unconvinced that peace is the only way forward, that, if we are to live together we must actively begin to know each other and not hunker down in our own tribal comfort zones. This is NOT about preaching to the converted; it’s about changing the landscape. The Dream Hope Believe concert will feature prominent Northern Ireland talent from the arts from both sides of the community, including The Priests, Phil Coulter, J.J.Gilmore (composer of ‘Dancing Shoes…The George Best Story” and many more. It will be attended by Deputy First Minister Martin McGuiness, Assembly Speaker William Hay and residents of Bogside, Brandywell and Fountain together with the Bloody Sunday families. We hope the concert will light the torch of reconciliation for a shared future.
Conversations Across The Walls acknowledges the vulnerable situation of First Derry Presbyterian Church, on an interface with the Bogside/Brandwell, and offers Derry's oldest Presbyterian congregation (within the walls) an opportunity to creatively engage with their Catholic, Nationalist/Republican neighbours. But, more importantly we want to reach the whole Island! The spark that lit the ‘troubles was struck right here, we can make sure no one can ignite that fire ever again.
Dr Ian Paisley, former First Minister and Martin McGuiness, Deputy First Minister have agreed to participate in the first of these ‘Conversations Across The Walls’, scheduled to begin in September. President Mary Mc Aleese has also recently agreed to take part in the series. Invitations to the Managers of both Celtic and Rangers Football Clubs are at an advanced stage, while other invitees are set to include people such as Dana, David Beckham, Mickey Harte and Graham McDowell.
Whilst others grab headlines by bombing cultural offices to drive us apart, might we not grab some by using culture to bring us together? Wishful thinking? Three Catholic priests singing in a Presbyterian church was wishful thinking just five months ago. Are we dreaming? Dream. Hope. Believe.
