Have your Say! (Groups/Organisations)

Are you an older person?  Do you care for an older person? Do you belong to a group for older people? Age NI wants to hear from you!

Who is Age NI?

Age NI is the new force combining Age Concern NI and Help the Aged in Northern Ireland. We work for a better later life today and tomorrow. We celebrate ageing and work to create opportunity in later life

How can we have our say?

We want to hear from older people, their family or carers about what the key issues affecting older people are.

If you or an older person you know has encountered problems with things like benefits, health and social care, housing, transport, if you have been discriminated against on the grounds of your age, if you struggle on a low income, or if you have another burning issue you want to share - we want to know about it!
Age NI is recruiting older people from across
Northern Ireland to act as peer facilitators. It is these older people who will come out to your group or organisation and gather the information that you would like to pass on.

How will you use this information?

Age NI lobby Government to improve lives for older people.  We campaign on issues relating to poverty, health and social care and equality.  The more information we can gather on how older people are affected by these issues the stronger our case will be.  We need your help!

If we are not lobbying on the issue you are concerned about, we can, with your permission, share your story with an organisation or group that is.

Please note this is merely a reporting tool.  If you require advice on a matter you can ring our Advice & Advocacy freephone number on 0808 808 7575 for personalised advice. Lines are open Monday to Friday, 9am - 4pm.

What do I do now?

Peer Facilitators will be available to visit your group at an agreed date and time. They will spend approximately one hour with you, to facilitate a listening session with you, gather your views, and bring them back to Age NI.

If you are interested, and would like to arrange for someone to come out to your group/organisation, please use the contact details as follows:

Investing in Volunteers Success in Northern Ireland

Congratulations to seven organisations who achieved the Investing in Volunteers Award (IiV) at April’s Quality Assurance Panel in London.  The successful groups were Lagan Valley Rural Transport, Newry and Mourne Community Transport, Northern Visions, the Corrymeela Community, New Lodge Arts, North Coast Community Transport and ZEST.

Volunteer Now is responsible for managing Investing in Volunteers in Northern Ireland and for assessing organisations against the Standard.  New Lodge Arts, North Coast Community Transport and ZEST were funded through Building Change Trust, having received a bursary.

Commenting on the achievement Brian Groves said, “I found the experience very beneficial to myself, staff, directors and volunteers from Newry & Mourne Community Transport.”

Sandra Adair, Lead Assessor for Investing in Volunteers in Northern Ireland said, “It would be great to welcome more groups to the Investing in Volunteers process, in total 38 groups in Northern Ireland are now publicly demonstrating their commitment to good practice through achievement of this Award and are improving volunteers’ experiences.”

If you would like to hear more about how you too could achieve the Investing in Volunteers Award please contact David Fitzsimons, Volunteer Now on 028 9081 8330 or email investinginvolunteers@volunteernow.co.uk

Get snapping to celebrate local wildlife

A new photography competition to promote the discovery and enjoyment of
Northern Ireland’s countryside and native wildlife has been launched.

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) and the Northern Ireland Biodiversity Officers Forum are inviting everyone from across
Northern Ireland to submit their photographs for the competition.

The photographs must have
Northern Ireland’s landscapes or natural world at their heart and can feature people, places, plants or wildlife. The winning images will feature in a wall calendar for 2012 promoting Northern Ireland’s biodiversity and the winning photographers will also receive a framed print of their image.

Renny McKeown from NIEA said: “There are two entry levels - an under 18 category and an over 18 category. So there's every chance that your photograph could be one of the lucky ones to be selected.

“The closing date for entry into the competition is Friday 30 September 2011 so if you don’t already have an image you'd like to submit, you have all spring and summer to get snapping and capture your county at its best.”

For further
information about the competition including details on how to enter, visit: http://www.doeni.gov.uk/digitaldiscoveries

In Memory of Ursula Laeubli - 13.10.1964 - 14.4.2011

Co-founder of Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company, Ursula Laeubli died on the 14th April 2011. She was and will always be our inspiration. We loved her and we will go on loving her spirit. We are terribly sad to lose her and very joyful to have had the privilege to have been her colleagues and friends.

There will be a small private burial ceremony at her family home in Switzerland on Wednesday 20th April. An opportunity to say our goodbyes and celebrate her life will be organised at a later date. We will keep people informed. In the meantime, if you would like to send messages to her family please contact us at Echo Echo. We have also set up an online memoriam page for any friends, students or colleagues wishing to share their memories and send their love.

Rest in Peace dear Ursula x

Do you have a question about your rate bill?

Land & Property Services (LPS) and nidirect have teamed up to answer questions from domestic ratepayers about their bills.

A one hour online session will be held on http://www.nidirect.gov.uk on Thursday 21 April to answer queries.

You should send your questions to feedback@nidirect.gov.uk before Wednesday 20 April (
1.00pm). An LPS official will post responses on nidirect on Thursday 21 April at 2.30pm.

An LPS spokesperson said: "Rate bills were issued to homes and businesses across
Northern Ireland in the last week. Ratepayers will also have received an information booklet with their bill which contains useful information about how their bill is calculated, methods of payment, and how they can get help with paying their rates.
"A range of reliefs and entitlements are available to help those who are struggling to pay their rates, but many people are simply not claiming the allowances they are entitled to.
"We would encourage ratepayers who would like further
information about the help that is available or who have any other rating queries to participate in the webchat."

Email your questions to feedback@nidirect.gov.uk before 20 April. Names, email addresses and any other personal details from enquirers will not be published and they will not be used for any other purpose.
