As part of the Negotiating Change programme St Columb’s Park House established that there is a need for more infrastructural support and resources for communities who wish to look at Flags, emblems and murals within their own areas. In 2007 we produced the first Flags Audit and Household survey. At these two events we will be launching our 2011 research which was expanded to cover new areas in counties L’Derry and Strabane. The work was supported by consultants Cresco Trust and Dominic Bryan from Queens University. Areas were the household survey was conducted this year are; Drumahoe, Newbuildings, Leafair Park, Donemana & Newtownstewart
The project was funded by the SEUPB through the North West Peace III Cluster Board and is part of the St Columbs Park House Cultural Heritage and Identity Programme. The objectives of the project were; - To ascertain public attitudes in rural and urban areas towards flags and emblems, and - To provide a tool that will aid in facilitation, mediation and advice to those communities wishing to promote an agreed flags and emblems protocol.

To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Volunteers’ Week and recognise the European Year of Volunteering 2011, North West Volunteer Centre and Derry City Council’s Kickstart to Work programme will be hosting a Volunteer Fair at the Millennium Forum on Tuesday 7th June 2011.
Volunteers’ Week is a national campaign to celebrate volunteering, which takes place from 1 to 7 June each year. The Week focuses on the key themes of recognising and rewarding current volunteers and recruiting new volunteers by encouraging people to give volunteering a try. The Volunteer Fair will be the largest event showcasing volunteering in the North West of Ireland with up to 40 local groups promoting their activities and encouraging people to ‘volunteer…for a change’. Volunteers are motivated in many different ways however behind this is a real strong desire to make a significant impact on the lives of others.
The Volunteer Centre is now calling local voluntary/community organisations to register their interest in reserving a stall at the Volunteer Fair. The event at the Millennium Forum presents a fantastic opportunity to recruit new volunteers, promote projects and activities and find out what other groups are up to. Participation is free however promotional stalls at the event are limited.
Please contact Jacqueline or Geoff at the North West Volunteer Centre on tel. 028 7127 1017 or email geoff@volunteeringnorthwest.co.uk for further information. |

Age NI First Connect Service now operating in the Western Area
First Connect offers emotional and practical support at difficult times to people later in life. The service improves quality of life and empowers disadvantaged older people to access a comprehensive range of integrated services which will in turn help them remain independent, and enable them to access the right support, by working with them and their local community.
How does First Connect Work? The First Connect Coordinator will visit each client at home or at an alternative suitable venue, to discuss their needs and provide them with information on the services that are available. This could be as simple as involving them in the community by organising access to a day centre or community group, a benefits check to ensure they are getting what they are entitled to, providing home safety measures, etc. In agreement with the client, the First Connect Coordinator will signpost them to the services and make sure they are in place by regularly reviewing their care plan.
What difference will First Connect make? - Reduce Isolation - Provide emotional support - Improve quality of life - Increase independence so that clients can remain at home - Increase your confidence to make informed choices - Improve access to services and facilities in your community
For more information or to make a referral to the First Connect service contact Age NI at: Freephone 0808 808 7575. Alternatively you can contact the First Connect Coordinator for the Western Area, Eimear McKearney on 07425620194 or email Eimear.McKearney@ageni.org |
