Help for Families of Troubled Teens
A leading parenting support organisation is offering a free course to help parents spot and deal with problem teenage behaviour before it ends in trouble or tragedy.
The Parents Advice Centre is running the “Parenting Ur Teen” programme in Derry. It offers support with a wide range of issues encountered by teenagers and their families, including low self-esteem, isolation and alcohol or drug abuse.
Jackie Valentine, Director of Parenting Education at the Parents Advice Centre, said: “It’s more important than ever to equip parents with the tools they need to communicate with teenagers, as well as to identify and anticipate the kind of problems that weigh on a young person’s mind. We’re not saying it’s the answer in every case, but we have a high success rate in improving the quality of communication and relationships in families.”
The eight-week course (one evening a week) is aimed at families with 12 to 18 year-olds. It also deals with issues such as handling conflict and understanding the link between feelings and behaviour. The programme is contributing to a confidential study at the Institute of Child Care Research at Queen’s University, aimed at improving parenting support.
Parenting Ur Teen in Derry runs from Wednesday 11th May, parents need to register by calling the Parents Helpline – free of charge - on 0808 8010 722.
Jackie continues, “The majority of calls to the Helpline are about teenage behaviour and attitudes. Teens are not only experiencing hormonal changes that affect their day-to-day moods, but are also seeking more independence. Raising a trouble teen can be exhausting, and parents can never have too much support.”
Spending large parts of the day in front of the TV or computer screen is also contributing to the isolation of young people, according to Parents Advice. A study by the Childwise research company has found that most children spend two hours every day online. Six out of ten 16 year-olds have their own computer, while a shocking 24 per cent of five to six year-olds have their own PC or laptop. “We’re not suggesting that children should be denied access to computers or games,” said Jackie Valentine, “but it’s important to set boundaries. If a teenager is spending large amounts of time online or on social networking sites, that can bring related unwanted behaviour. It’s adding to parents’ worries about other risks to their children, such as drink, drugs, and staying out late. “The good news is that equipping yourself with the skills to deal with all these issues doesn’t cost a penny. All you have to do is lift the phone and take part in the programme.”
For further information on the range of services which Parents Advice Centre offers log onto our website http://www.parentsadvicecentre.org/ or if you have a family issue you would like to talk about call freephone 0808 801 0722. |

Steps to Healing Programme Information
The Wider Circle runs a Steps to Healing Programme for people who have suffered from trauma. This is a gentle self-help group programme in either a residential or weekly setting.
The next programme is a Steps to Healing Residential from 25-27 March 2011 in Drumalis Retreat Centre, Larne. There are a few places still available so early registration is advisable.
Further weekly Programmes will begin in April 2011.
The Steps to Healing Programme is a self-help group healing programme for people who have suffered from trauma. Participants share their experiences in a small, confidential and supportive setting, with people who have also suffered traumatic experiences.
Facilitators of the programme have also been through the Steps to Healing Programme, this helps to create greater trust and understanding between facilitators and participants. Only those who have personal experience of trauma may facilitate and they too communicate their stories with the group.
Each programme comprises of up to 6 participants with 2-3 facilitators. The focus is on sharing the experience of trauma within the group, telling the trauma and life stories and creating artwork as part of the healing process. This format is designed to show the participant their trauma story in the context of their life as a whole. This allows them to see that the trauma which they have suffered was an event in their life and does not define their life. The disproportionate impact upon the person’s emotions is recognised - participants are encouraged to recognise the significance of the event. However, participants report that this structure enables them to see that life was good before their trauma occurred and that there is no reason why life should not be good again. Participants can visualise the trauma as having a start and end point. It has been reported that this is a big factor in helping people to “move on.
Below is some feedback from recent participants:
“The Programme provides “time out from your busy life just for you. Time to focus on your internal journey”
“The Wider Circle Programme gives the person the opportunity, in a safe and secure environment, to move towards closure and a better future”
“It was a privilege to be a part of this sharing group”
“Insightful healing – thank you for all your help and support”
“The Programme helped me let go of a lot of fear and anxiety associated with a traumatic event in my life and allowed me to listen and support others in helping produce collages which facilitated others’ journeys”
“A release and liberation through respect, listening, sharing and healing”
“Everything was made straight forward and the whole thing was respectful and gentle”
