The focus is on building the skills and capabilities of the social entrepreneur and in ensuring that those social economy businesses which are capable of making a significant economic impact get appropriate support in a timely fashion.
This programme is offered to potential social enterprises at 2 distinct stages: - Those at pre-start or start-up stage - Existing enterprising who are looking to grow
Programme elements: Lead-in Development Support This is available for those groups who have not availed of pre-start support already for their specific social economy start-up idea. The Enquiry Development component will cover pre-business support including advice on business concept, researching the market and financing the project.
Core Capability Support This will encompass:- One-to-one mentoring to groups in terms of Business Plan Development; Modular sessions in terms of Start-Up Development with follow-up one-to-one mentoring and Modular sessions in terms of Post-start Operational Aftercare with follow-up one-to-one mentoring over a period of up to one year after start-up.
Financial Support An offer of financial assistance may be made which may be a grant or loan depending on the economic benefits of the social enterprise: Grant support; if the group is offered grant support it will be awarded on a case by case basis and will be based on the need of the group. Loan support; the loan component will be financed by UCIT or other sources. This financial package is intended to be a ‘lever’ for other sources of funding. Information Event for Big Lottery Fund Improving Futures Programme
The Big Lottery Fund in conjunction with Local Government Improvement and Development is holding an information event on Thursday 14 April to highlight the Improving Futures Programme.
The Improving Futures programme aims to improve outcomes for children that grow up in difficult circumstances. Some families experience multiple and complex problems – for example, to do with poor health, unemployment, debt or housing problems – which can affect their children’s wellbeing and life chances.
Following extensive consultation with public and voluntary sector organisations, the Big Lottery Fund have decided to fund partnerships that can offer joined-up support and provision for families with multiple and complex problems at a local level.
Interested parties need to be aware of the following: Partnerships must be led by voluntary sector organisations, but will need to be supported by or include local authorities in Wales and England, Community Planning Partnerships in Scotland, and Health and Social Care Trusts in Northern Ireland Because every family is different, partnerships will need to be able to draw on a broad range of expertise and services to meet their needs, including setting out to help those families considered ‘hardest to reach’.
The Big Lottery Fund have limited funding to support up to 20 partnerships across the UK, and no more than one expression of interest should be made per local authority area.
Further information on the programme can be found on the Big Lottery Fund website - http://www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/prog_improving_futures?tab=3&
The event will take place in the Raddison Blu Hotel, The Gasworks, Belfast and will run from 1.30pm to 4.00pm
If you would like to attend the event, please contact Isabel Fowler at Isabel.Fowler@local.gov.uk or complete the booking form at http://www.idea.gov.uk/idk/events/display-event.do?id=26596061 |

Register for Free Training for those involved in Bonfires / Alternatives to bonfires
Derry City Council Community Relations Officers would like to invite relevant groups / individuals to apply for a free incentive based package of training. The training is relevant (and prioritised to) groups and individuals involved in community bonfires or alternatives to bonfires. The closing date for registrations to the course is 3rd May 2011.
Groups participating in the ‘Burning Issues’ research and conference (February 2011) indicated the need for council to be proactive in local communities without prejudice to whether those communities supported maintaining bonfire traditions or replacing bonfires with alternatives. The need for relevant free training (including Child Protection; First Aid; and Marshalling and Stewarding) was identified. Groups also identified that an incentive scheme with a balanced approach was the only approach which should be piloted. It has therefore been decided to do a pilot incentive based training package, open to all, under the Good Relations Strategy for May - June 2011.
The attached pages identify 6 training courses which are now open for application. To register, individuals must complete and return the attached application form by Tuesday 3rd May 2011. In the event of oversubscription, the prioritisation criteria will be applied. People will be notified after the closing date to confirm their registration.
As part of the pilot incentive scheme applications are asked to nominate a constituted Community Organisation which they would like any incentive payment to be made to. Applicants should nominate a Community Group which is either responsible for, directly involved in, or indirectly involved in the bonfire or alternative to bonfire event. Payment will be calculated based on the total number of individuals and courses attended by individuals who have nominated that Community Organisation. It will take approximately 4 weeks from the date of the final course for payment to be issued. It is at the discretion of that organisation what the money will be spent on – those who attend the training should liaise with their nominated organisation to discuss whether for example the payment should contribute to the event for which they have trained. The maximum amount paid per nominated organisation (and per indicated bonfire / alternative to bonfire) will be £250.
The pilot training and incentive scheme will be evaluated after delivery to assess whether it should be continued in any form in subsequent years. Should you wish to comment directly at any stage please contact the Community Relations Officers on tel: 71345160 sue.divin@derrycity.gov.uk
It is hoped that a wide range of relevant communities will benefit positively from this initiative. |

Tower Museum to host Hedge School Debate
This Sunday 17th April, 3pm, the Tower Museum will host an evocative debate on the Hedge Schools of the 18th and 19th century Ireland.
Hosted by History Ireland, the debate aims to bring the history of Hedge Schools alive and will include topics of interest to both national and local communities.
History Ireland Hedge School master Tommy Graham will start the debate by introducing Micheál Ó Siochrú (Trinity College Dublin (TCD)), Jane Ohlmeyer (TCD), James Sharkey (Irish diplomat), Patrick Fitzgerald (Ulster-American Folk Park) and Mark Sweetman (University of Aberdeen) to discuss the 1641 Depositions. As always with the History Ireland Hedge Schools, the audience has equal say with the panel of experts.
The History Ireland Hedge School debates hark back to the unofficial hedge schools of 18th and 19th century Ireland, where travelling teachers taught people in the open, before there was an official education system.
The History Ireland Hedge School debate takes place on Sunday 17th April, 3pm at the Tower Museum. Admission is free, however advance booking is recommended. Contact Joanne Devine on email: museums@derrycity.gov.uk or 028-7137 7331. |

Wanted a few good men, and more
An open meeting is been held in the Chest Heart & Stroke offices, 9-10 Spencer House, 14-22 Spencer Road, Waterside, L/Derry, Waterside on Wednesday 20th April at 4.00 pm.
To establish if men of all ages and skills, employed, unemployed or retired are interesting in finding out about the Men’s shed organisation.
So what is a men’s shed? A Men’s shed is a community-based, non-commercial organization which is open to all men where the primary activity is the provision of a safe, friendly and inclusive environment where men are able to gather and/or work on anything from restoring furniture to bicycles, old cars/tractors, maybe fixing lawn mowers, or working on that D.I.Y project they never got around to at their own pace, in their own time and in the company of other men. Members of Men’s Sheds can come from all walks of life - the bond that unites them is that they are men with time on their hands and they would like something meaningful to do with that time. “John Evoy from Men’s shed Ireland says they are around twenty five men’s shed up and running in Ireland since 2005 and more are starting up bringing great opportunities for men to get involved”
The meeting will be facilitated by Cathal Monaghan; a member of the Men’s Development Network Ireland and Men’s Sheds Ireland, Cathal has been involved in men’s groups and other men’s organizations for many years.
