Looking for ways to boost your organisation’s income? A Workshop on Gift Aid

10-12 noon, Thursday 20 Oct 2011, First Floor, Ráth Mór Centre, Bligh’s Lane, Creggan, Derry~Londonderry

To enquire about attendance, contact NWCN immediately.

NWCN has invited Copius Consulting to assist charitable groups in the North-West (including sports groups) with developing their ability to make the most out of Gift Aid.

Copius (Gift Aid) has recognised that there is a need for small charities and community and voluntary groups that have charitable status to maximise their Gift Aid.  Whether it is a lack of resources, understanding or knowledge we aim to fill in the gaps and allow these groups to re-claim the monies for which they are entitled.  Experience has shown that many small charities lack resources to get returns filed; they miss opportunities within the events they are running and may feel that their priorities lie elsewhere.

It is also known that charities need to start looking at becoming more self-sufficient as public funding becomes more difficult to secure, and as they do so Gift Aid should be at the fore-front of these plans. Copius was shocked to learn that £48million went unclaimed in Northern Ireland in 2010.

Implementing best practice now will allow charitable organisations to benefit in the long term; the free information session we are delivering with NWCN in Derry~Londonderry on the 20th October is a must-attend event for those groups that want to maximise their income.

* Gift Aid is an easy way to help a charity maximise the value of its donations, as you can reclaim tax from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) on its 'gross' equivalent - its value before tax was deducted at the basic rate.  You can work out the amount of tax you can reclaim by dividing the amount donated by four. This means that for every £1 donated, you can claim an extra 25 pence.

Donations/payments that can qualify for Gift Aid:

- cash

- cheque

- Direct Debit

- credit or debit card

- postal order

- standing order or telegraphic transfer

Some examples of what doesn’t qualify for Gift Aid:

- donations of money from a company

- donations in the form of a loan waiver or debt conversion

- gifts with a condition that it buys goods or services from the donor

- payments received in return for goods or services

- a 'minimum donation' where there is no choice about payment - this is simply a fee for goods or services, it is not a gift.

Swimathon Foundation Application

Do you know a community group that is keen to make a splash in the swimming pool? Then why not suggest they apply for a Swimathon Foundation grant?

The Foundation is offering grants of between £300 and £2,500 to swimming pools, community organisations and charities who can demonstrate how funding will allow them to help more people participate in and enjoy swimming and to make swimming more accessible.

Whether you’re a scout leader that would like to take your troop for a day at an open air pool, a healthy living group wanting to try our Aquaerobics for the first time or a scuba diving club desperate for new equipment, a grant could be the helping hand you need!

For more information and to apply online please visit the website: www.swimathon.org/foundation. The first round of applications closes on 12 December 2011 so make sure you pass on the word to anyone who may be interested.

Artists, writers, film-makers – let’s talk about 2013

Are you an artist, writer or film-maker and want to share your thinking about how 2013 can make a difference to Derry~Londonderry?

Culture Company in partnership with Derry City Council’s Community Relations Officers are inviting individual artists from all disciplines to take part in a one-day conference on Wednesday 26th October at the White Horse Inn.  ‘Your 2013: What’s the Big Idea?’ aims to stimulate imaginative ideas and creative thinking on how art and culture can be used to explore the major themes of 2013 - ‘Joyous Celebration’ and ‘Purposeful Inquiry.’

Culture Company Senior Programmer Martin Melarkey explained:

“We are looking for the big ideas which will ignite the imagination and inspire creativity in every community of the city. 2013 offers us a unique chance to explore the heritage of the city and share our new story with the world. Artists have a crucial role to play in helping us develop creative and artistic responses to the legacy of the past. I would really encourage artists to come along on October 26th and offer their creative skills and ideas to communities seeking to have their voices heard in 2013.”

Since Derry~Londonderry won the City of Culture title in July 2010, Culture Company has already received many ideas and project proposals, some of which will also be considered at the conference.

Some of the broader questions which the event will pose, in a series of workshops, are:

What are the new stories that the citizens of the walled city wish to tell the world?

How do we capture and communicate these stories through creative art?

How can we collectively mark the 400th anniversary of the building of the city walls?

How can we use the architectural landmarks of the city as a canvas for cultural events in 2013?

What creative responses can we generate to the legacy of the past?

‘Your 2013: What’s The Big Idea conference at The White Horse on Wednesday 26th October will take place from 9.15am to 3.15pm, and admission is free. Advance registration is required.

To register for the conference each participant must complete a registration form which is available from Sue Divin, Good Relations Officer at Derry City Council T: 028 7134 5160 or email: sue.divin@derrycity.gov.uk Completed registration forms must be returned no later than Monday 17th October to Brian Anthony as indicated on the form.

The initiative is part of implementing Derry City Council’s Good Relations Strategy with funding from OFMDFM District Council’s Community Relations Programme.

Please note that places cannot be held unless registration forms are returned.  The maximum number of places per group is two.  In the event of the conference being oversubscribed, priority will be given to locally based artists, writers and film-makers in the Derry City Council area and then to those based in adjacent council areas (Strabane, Donegal, Limavady) before registrations from other areas.

Airporter will provide travel to and from the venue for those who do not have access to transport. Details of the city centre pick-up point will be provided once you register for the event.

It's 'The Big Decision' - how would you spend £10million?

What does this country need most - more recycling, better educated youngsters, stronger community spirit or new investment in science?

Channel 4 is following the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) as we ask the British public how they would spend 10 million pounds of lottery money. The results of this nationwide debate will help directly determine which projects will benefit from a Lottery funding.

From caring for the world around them, to helping people learn the skills they need to make the most of their lives, to tackling local issues- for the first time, the general public are being asked to decide the themes that best represent their priorities for Lottery funding in the current climate. The results will help BIG to find five inspirational projects across the UK, each to receive a multi-million Big Lottery Fund grant as part of its Millennium Now programme.

Consumer Council And LINK Announce New Free To Use Cash Machines

Consumers in lower income areas across Northern Ireland are benefitting from new, free to use cash machines.  Working together the Consumer Council and LINK[1] have seen seven new free to use machines installed in the last 12 months, and 52 since the programme began in 2006.

Julie McCurley Consumer Council Head of Money Affairs said: “We are relieved to report today that more consumers in lower income areas in Northern Ireland can access their money free of charge.  Our research[2] shows that many people on lower incomes withdraw small amounts at a time in order to manage their budgets.  However, many people were having to pay up to £2 just to withdraw £10 from a cash machine.  When people are already finding money really tight, this charge makes life even more difficult.

“There are still areas without access to free to use cash machines so the Consumer Council’s campaign must continue.  Next on our target list are Caw in Foyle, Upper Springfield in West Belfast and Silverbridge in rural County Armagh.  The Consumer Council will work with LINK, MLAs, banks and cash machine operators, and local government representatives to ensure that all consumers, particularly those in deprived areas, have free access to their own cash.  LINK and the Consumer Council would also like to hear from local community leaders and businesses who could help to identify appropriate sites in these areas.”

Dr Ken Andrew, LINK Chairman added: “We are delighted that our work with the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland, MLAs and local councillors has ensured that there are 52 new places around the province where cash can now be withdrawn free of charge.”

Age NI launches it’s Spread the Warmth campaign in partnership with Power NI

For many older people winter means loneliness, poverty and ill-health.

70% of older people tell us that staying in warm in winter is their biggest worry.

Some older people find it difficult to pay their heating bills and keep their homes warm enough. Many struggle to leave the house in extremely cold and icy conditions and don't see anyone for weeks. Age NI believes this must change.

Read Alfred's story - Age NI made a big difference to his life last winter.

Our Spread the Warmth campaign is about making winter better for people in later life. You can do your bit! It's easy to get involved.

Be kind
Spread the Warmth by doing something kind for an older relative, neighbour or friend to show you care. Give a lift to someone with no transport; offer a steadying arm on an icy day; cook a little extra dinner for someone who lives alone. Read even more ideas.
