‘How Involvement Can Liberate Health and Social Care’
An Invitation to an Open Space Workshop 2 and 3 March 2011, Island View Room, Lough Neagh Discovery Centre, Oxford Island, Lurgan
You are invited to participate in a journey which will enable us to use Personal and Public Involvement to build a better Health and Social Care Service.
Personal and Public Involvement has helped shape Health and Social Care thinking and practice for several years. This Open Space workshop will offer an opportunity to reflect on progress to date, to look at the ‘big picture’ and consider how Personal and Public Involvement should be used to help us achieve the health and social care outcomes we are striving for.
The 2002 Wanless Report ‘Securing Our Future: Taking a Long-Term View’ sets out an assessment of the resources required to provide high quality health services in the future. It sets out the many benefits of engaging with people to live healthier lives, leading to a reduction in demand for acute services.
In 2010 the Marmot Review Team published ‘Fair Society, Healthy Lives’. The review proposes evidence-based strategies for reducing health inequalities. The review argues that action to reduce health inequality will benefit society in many ways.
Within Northern Ireland, Professor John Appleby’s Report (2005) on health and social care activity led to a number of changes to the patient experience. In addition, the statutory duty to engage with service users as contained in the Health and Social Service (Reform) (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 has put personal and public involvement at the heart of health and social care.
The challenge for Health and Social Care is to learn from the wider policy environment and use that learning to ensure that involvement liberates health and social care.
The Open Space methodology is carefully designed to elicit maximum involvement and creativity in a constructive atmosphere. It is also highly flexible so that the content is entirely determined by you - the participants. The event will be inventive, creative, productive and full of surprises.
We are on a journey without maps, except as we draw them. There are no simple answers, only an opportunity to explore together. Please join us to begin the exploration.
The success of the event will be totally dependent upon individual and collective responsibility to make it happen. The content is what each person shares, and the outcome is what we will all create. We propose to create an Open Space in which clear thinking and creativity can flourish. We need to better understand our strengths and how we can build on them to position us to better serve our public.
When you sign up, keep in mind that you are committing to participate for two days. Dress: Casual dress is suggested.
RSVP: To reserve a place, please contact Patricia on 028 3834 9900 or email: joanne.king@hscni.net by Friday 18 February 2011.
NB: As space is limited, places will be confirmed on a first come, first served basis. |
