Money from Grants - Funding Advice Sessions at NWCN

 

Do you need help with making funding applications? NICVA, in conjunction with North-West Community Network, is arranging a day of funding advice sessions in Derry~Londonderry on 21 September 2011 to offer charities and other not-for-profits advice on grant applications.

 

Do you need to…

- Find out why your funding applications fail or?

- Get help completing an application form or?

- Find funders who match your project?

 

Sessions (of up to one hour) are available as follows and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis: 9.00 am; 10:00; 11:00; 12:00; 1:30; 2:30; 3:30; 4:30

The Ulster Bank Community Sir George Quigley Award

 

The Ulster Bank Community Sir George Quigley Award recognises the contribution of Sir George Quigley over 13 years as Chairman of Ulster Bank Group.

The award fund, launched in April 2002 and managed by The Community Foundation for Northern Ireland, is available throughout Ireland and aims to help the community and voluntary sector reach sustainability.

Aim

 

This annual Award aims to support community groups and charities in their ambition to achieve long-term sustainability.

 

Applicants should demonstrate how the award will:

1. Enable them to develop and/or implement a strategy for organisational sustainability

2. Learn from the experience and share this with others

 

Applications are invited from organisations within the community and voluntary sector working within Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, or on a cross-border basis.

 

What will be supported

Guidelines for examples of work that can be considered for the Award are:

The development of community business

New community and voluntary based approaches to the social economy

New ideas that offer the community and voluntary sector strategies for organisational sustainability

Funding for feasibility reports, salary costs or ongoing running/programme costs will not be considered.

 

The Award

Award: €10,000 or Sterling equivalent to implement plans, alongside public recognition of group achievements.

Arts and Older people grants - Baring Foundation deadline


The Baring Foundation is focusing its funding on the theme of arts and older people.

Grants for projects in 2012 will support work to link different types of residential care settings into the community around them through the creative power of the arts.

Funding for 2012
They will aim to support around 15 arts organisations undertaking exemplary projects. The total fund will be at least £300,000 and the maximum single grant will be £30,000.

Key criteria for consideration will be projects which:
- respect older participants’ rights and abilities to shape and determine the course of the project activities and to contribute to the arts organisation’s development;
- reach and engage people who experience disadvantage and discrimination through economic, health or other barriers to full participation;
- display evidence of effective partnerships with residential care settings and in some cases other partners as well;
- link the care setting with the external community in a way which creates value to both;
- include a costed contribution from partners.

As an approved intermediary, our debt advisor can provide advice on Debt Relief Orders and assist clients in making a Debt Relief Order application.

Strategic Leadership Programme 2011 – 2012

 

Under representation of women in decision making fora and to influence the development of policies to address this issue. A range of interventions are planned at a local, national and cross-border levels (including training, advocacy, strengthening of civic networks and support for women taking leadership roles).  It proposes to work in collaboration with public sector organisations to enhance the role and the participation of women in decision-making and to positively impact on public service delivery. The project is funded by the INTERREG IVA Programme and managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) www.seupb.eu.

 

WIPL are now recruiting for a Strategic Leadership Programme focused on women who exercise leadership or are already in leadership roles. This accredited Programme will involve 24 women from the Derry/Londonderry and Donegal region.

 

The aim of the Programme is to increase the number of women leaders in key decision-making roles in the North West through enhancing confidence, knowledge, skills and leadership capacity. The Programme incorporates theoretical and practical elements and is designed to operate within a broad understanding of decision-making.

 

Who is the Programme for? 

The Programme welcomes women keen to advance in economic, social, political and public life. Participants will come from a variety of sectors and backgrounds and will have:

- leading/managing/organising experience in grassroots activism, community, voluntary, statutory or the private sector;

- a commitment to working towards the increased participation of women in public life and bringing - - a women’s perspective/analysis to public debate;

- a willingness to reflect on their own practice, leadership style and be open to the opportunities and challenges the Programme will present;

- a commitment to fully participate in and complete the Programme;

- A willingness to participate in WIPL activities.

 

What will participants gain from this Programme?

Participants will explore women’s experiences across aspects of society including barriers to equality and positive action strategies to overcome these.  Specifically, participants will:

- gain an understanding of leadership styles and approaches and develop an ability to reflect critically on their own approach;

- enhance their skills in a range of areas including communication, group dynamics and critical analysis;

- draw up personal action plans identifying steps to enable them to move into strategic leadership roles;

- explore and debate issues in a way that encourages sharing of own and others’ experiences.

 

Topics will be explored through a combination of presentations, discussions, workshops and action-based activities with some guest speakers presenting on specialist subjects. Mentoring will be an important aspect of the Programme.

 

Accreditation: The Programme will be accredited to Level 5 OCNNI.

 

When will it take place? 

The Programme will be delivered over 14 days. Additionally there will be some individual assignments and a study trip is part of the Programme.  The Programme will take place monthly, on Thursdays and Fridays on the following dates: 

 

2011: November 10th & 11th, December 08th & 09th

2012:    January 12th & 13th

February 09th & 10th

March 08th & 09th

April 19th & 20th

May 10th & 11th

Field trip to be arranged

 

Where?  The location of the Programme will alternate between a venue in Derry/Londonderry and Letterkenny.

 

The Trainers: The training will be delivered by DemocraShe. The organisation works at multiple levels, with government, politicians, policy-makers and civic society organisations. DemocraShe’s three trainers are: Bronagh Hinds, Ann Hope and Eileen Mullan.

Hands that Talk improves the quality of life for deaf people by providing access to employment, education and services. It has also enabled the Deaf community to experience a much more deaf aware society, where communication barriers have been broken down.


Thanks to National Lottery funding, Hands That Talk has three full-time and two part-time members of staff who are working to improve the lives of deaf people in Northern Ireland. It has enabled the centre to provide deaf awareness courses, sign language classes from basic level to NVQ Level 4 and a Junior Trainee Interpreting Course to help train new interpreters.

6 day free training course – ‘Storytelling and Positive Encounter Dialogue’

 

I am delighted to forward you information on a free accredited ‘Storytelling and Positive Encounter Dialogue’ training opportunity.   The training is prioritised to individuals, volunteers or community workers who live or work in the Derry City Council area.  It is delivered in partnership between Derry City Council and Towards Understanding and Healing (TUH, The Junction).

 

The six day training course will be held as follows:

Course:             Storytelling and Positive Encounter Dialogue (OCN Level 2) – 15 places.

Dates:              Participants should be able to attend all of the following dates:

Marie Curie Information Evening

 

The Unlocking Potential Project (a project of Volunteer Now) in association with the North-West Volunteer Centre hosts an information evening for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

 

The organisation is seeking to set up a Marie Curie Group in the city and in particular appoint volunteer ambassadors for the organisation. These ambassadors will be trained to deliver talks about the services of Marie Curie Cancer Care, sign-post individuals. The organisation is also seeking to appoint interested volunteers to help set-up a fundraising committee within the city in order to support the huge care carried out by Marie-Curie Nurses, who provide palliative care for patients at home.

 

You are invited to come along and hear first-hand form a former Marie-Curie Nurse who is now a volunteer in Strabane and other Marie Cure staff.

This is to challenge EVERYBODY on how young people are accessing alcohol, and what we can do about it.

 

This conference is for everyone who has a role to play in reducing the availability of alcohol to under 18’s. It will be a thought provoking conference on the reality of underage drinking and how we can work meaningfully together to address the relative ease of access to alcohol for young people.

Derry to Host 33rd Celtic Media Festival

 

Derry-Londonderry has been chosen as the host city for the 33rd annual Celtic Media Festival from the 18th-20th of April 2012.

 

The festival is expected to attract some big name guests and prestigious industry speakers to the city.  Hollywood star Tilda Swinton, Creation Records founder Alan McGee and award winning actor, writer and director Peter Mullan were among the contributors at the 32nd festival in Stornoway, Scotland last year.

 

Previous high profile guests include screenwriter Jimmy McGovern, film maker Ken Loachand actors Rhys Ifans and Stephen Rea.

 

The three day celebration of digital media, broadcasting and film talent will be held in The Playhouse Theatre and will showcase some of the best work from Northern Ireland, The Republic of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man and Brittany. Entries can be submitted for consideration online at www.celticmediafestival.co.uk.

 

The Celtic Media Festival is an event for producers and broadcasters, for students and emerging talent, for media policy-makers and for the general public. A programme of local screenings, exhibitions, evening entertainment and celebrity interviews will be open to the public and a series of master-classes and seminars with well-known industry professionals will offer students and practitioners practical advice and insights.

 

The highlight of the Celtic Media Festival is the Awards.  Bronze Torcs for Excellence, celebrating the very best of film, television, radio and digital media to emerge from the Celtic nations and regions, – whether in English, Breton, Irish, Welsh, Manx or Scottish Gaelic - will be awarded in 20 categories. The winners will be selected by an international jury.
