Looking for ways to boost your organisation’s income? A Workshop on Gift Aid

10-12 noon, Thursday 20 Oct 2011, First Floor, Ráth Mór Centre, Bligh’s Lane, Creggan, Derry~Londonderry

To enquire about attendance, contact NWCN immediately.

NWCN has invited Copius Consulting to assist charitable groups in the North-West (including sports groups) with developing their ability to make the most out of Gift Aid.

Copius (Gift Aid) has recognised that there is a need for small charities and community and voluntary groups that have charitable status to maximise their Gift Aid.  Whether it is a lack of resources, understanding or knowledge we aim to fill in the gaps and allow these groups to re-claim the monies for which they are entitled.  Experience has shown that many small charities lack resources to get returns filed; they miss opportunities within the events they are running and may feel that their priorities lie elsewhere.

It is also known that charities need to start looking at becoming more self-sufficient as public funding becomes more difficult to secure, and as they do so Gift Aid should be at the fore-front of these plans. Copius was shocked to learn that £48million went unclaimed in Northern Ireland in 2010.

Implementing best practice now will allow charitable organisations to benefit in the long term; the free information session we are delivering with NWCN in Derry~Londonderry on the 20th October is a must-attend event for those groups that want to maximise their income.

* Gift Aid is an easy way to help a charity maximise the value of its donations, as you can reclaim tax from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) on its 'gross' equivalent - its value before tax was deducted at the basic rate.  You can work out the amount of tax you can reclaim by dividing the amount donated by four. This means that for every £1 donated, you can claim an extra 25 pence.

Donations/payments that can qualify for Gift Aid:

- cash

- cheque

- Direct Debit

- credit or debit card

- postal order

- standing order or telegraphic transfer

Some examples of what doesn’t qualify for Gift Aid:

- donations of money from a company

- donations in the form of a loan waiver or debt conversion

- gifts with a condition that it buys goods or services from the donor

- payments received in return for goods or services

- a 'minimum donation' where there is no choice about payment - this is simply a fee for goods or services, it is not a gift.

WELB Youth Service Funding - CRED Enhancement

The Western Education and Library Board’s (WELB) Youth Service has received funding from the Department of Education (DE) for the provision of Community Relations Equality and Diversity (CRED) in education programmes.

The CRED scheme aims to enable children and young people to understand and deal with difference. Applicants must provide a copy of their constitution, child protection policy, proof of AccessNI compliance, insurance details and bank account details.

The closing date for applications is Friday 14 October 2011.

Funding available up to €50, 000

Fancy up to €50, 000 to develop a project focusing on Youth Policy or do you know a group of young people who would or could benefit from the same?

Fergal Barr has been commissioned by the Youth Council for Northern Ireland to recruit and provide ‘hands-on’ support to a minimum of two groups of young people (from across Northern Ireland) between the ages of 18 and 30 to design, develop and submit an application under Measure 5.1 of the EU’s YiA (Youth in Action) Programme by the next programme deadline, i.e., 1st November 2011.

Measure 5.1 supports co-operation, seminars and structured dialogue between young people, youth workers and youth organisations, and those responsible for youth policy.

Funding is available for a range of costs including travel, accommodation and food, organisation of seminars, meetings, consultations, activities, publications/translations/information costs, dissemination and exploitation of results and other costs directly linked to the implementation of the project.  Seventy-five percent of total eligible costs are available up to a maximum of €50, 000.

A project under Action 5.1 is developed with a view to implementing one or more of the following Activities:

- National Youth Meeting takes place at local, regional, and national level with a view to offering space for debate, consultation, active participation and information on issues which are relevant to Structured Dialogue or European Union policies and topics.  Activities can also be linked to the European Youth Week and enhancing cross-sectoral dialogue and cooperation between formal and non-formal education areas.

- Trans-national Youth Seminar brings together gatherings of young people and policy-makers aimed at discussing, exchanging ideas and best practice, and/or adopting recommendations around topics centered on the priorities and objectives of the Structured Dialogue and the renewed political framework in the youth field.

Each Applicant Group should consist of between (a minimum of) three and (maximum of) seven participants.  Depending on the number and quality of applications this might be reduced to a maximum of five young people per group.

It’s also possible that more than one bid can be submitted from the same organisation but clear evidence of differences in group and project idea will need to be demonstrated.

During the process of developing a bid participants will learn how to address objectives and priorities of the YiA Programme, EU youth policy objectives and quality of the project and methods proposed as well as profile and number of participants.

This initiative provides a wonderful opportunity for 18-30 year olds to develop new or reaffirm existing skills in relation to developing and submitting a funding bid yet provides a realistic opportunity to secure funding for a programme that may have been under consideration for some time.

There will be a minimum of two meetings with each successful group – the first of these will take place on Thursday 20th October and second will take place on Tuesday 25th or Thursday 26th October.  This will be followed by an overnight residential on Friday 28th October which will run between 8.30pm and finish at the same time on Saturday 29th October.

At least 2 people from each group should be available for both meetings (third meeting if necessary) whilst all group members must be available for overnight residential.

There are no costs involved other than time.  Food and accommodation will be provided.

If you are over 18 and you are part of an existing youth group (alongside friends and/or colleagues) or you are a youth worker (be that full-time, part-time or voluntary) working directly with young people or you know of a group or groups of young people aged between 18 and 30 who would be interested in submitting a bid to Measure 5.1 of the EU’s Youth in Action Programme please complete the attached application form and return it to thekingisalive@hotmail.com by Friday 14th October 2011.  Please ask for receipt of your application by return of e-mail.

Applicants will be notified by Monday 17th October and should be ready to begin work on their application immediately.

Please note I have also attached the 2011 YiA Guide where you can get more information about Measure 5.1 (pages 105-112).

Introduction to Mediation Certificate

Mediation is a way of resolving dispute that can prevent the need for formal resolution through a court process or through grievance procedures in workplace disputes.  In recent years the use of mediators in neighbourhood disputes, divorce, custody and property issues have significantly increased to the extent that there is a growing demand for accredited mediators who are trained to an advanced level.

There is an expectation from those who refer people to mediation that the mediators are qualified to give a professional service to people caught up in conflict.

The Peace and Reconciliation Group are offering an Advanced Mediators Open College Network Accredited training course that will qualify you to become an accredited mediator through an experiential learning process that will allow you to work in many types of conflict.

Exploring (London)Derry English

A Talk on the varieties of English spoken in Derry by Prof. Kevin McCafferty

As part of Derry City Council’s ‘Island Voices – Language and Cultural Identity Autumn Lecture Series 2011

Wednesday 12th October, 7:00pm, Tower Museum

Derry City Council’s Heritage and Museum Service in partnership with the Council’s Irish Language Officer is hosting the second lecture next week as part of the its Island Voices Autumn Lecture series which aims to explore the influence of the languages of English, Irish and Ulster-Scots on our cultural identity, The lecture entitled ‘Exploring (London) Derry English’ will be delivered by Derry-born Professor of Linguistics, Kevin McCafferty, on Wednesday, 12th October at 7 pm at the Tower Museum.

Kevin has been working in the field of Hiberno-English for nearly 20 years and has undertaken detailed research into Northern Irish-English. His talk will explore the ways in which social class, gender, age and ethnicity influence the dialects of English spoken in this area.

Margaret Edwards, Education Officer with the Heritage and Museum Service said it was an excellent opportunity to visit the Tower Museum and hear some interesting discussions on the development of the English, Irish and Ulster-Scots languages.

“This talk will be of particular interest to post primary and third level students of English as well as those studying English as a foreign language. The first lecture was very well received and we are delighted with the excellent panel of guest speakers that are lined up for the lecture series. We are confident that the lectures will prompt interesting debate and engagement.” she said.

Pól Ó Frighil, Irish language Officer with Derry City Council also extended a welcome to anyone interested in finding out more about why we speak the way we do and how factors such as perceived class, religion and other social factors combine to create our individual dialects of English. He said “This talk is particularly timely as it encourages us to explore the multiple influences on our sense of identity and illustrates the diversity of identities which can exist within one place. I would encourage anyone interested in Derry English to avail of this unique opportunity to hear from a leading voice in this specialist field.”

The third and last lecture, scheduled for Thursday 17th November will be delivered by Seoirse Ó Dochartaigh and is entitled ‘Turas Teanga na Gaeilge: the Irish Language~ a Journey’. Seoirse is a painter, musician and researcher with family roots in Inishowen. He has previously worked in the O’Dochartaigh Family Research Centre in Inch and now works as a freelance genealogist. He has published a number of books including a compendium featuring the place names of Inishowen.

The Island Voices programme is funded by Derry City Council’s Good Relations Programme and is supported by Foras na Gaeilge.
