“The True Spirit of Sport” Seminar
12th May 2011, 7:00pm in Roe Valley Leisure Centre, Limavady
Time IVA Change Border Region Alcohol Project Evidence suggests that the most effective way of dealing with alcohol issues is through strategic, multi-disciplinary action involving statutory, business and voluntary sectors. To tackle the current alcohol culture and the impact of harmful alcohol use on society the North West Alcohol Forum Ltd. (Letterkenny), Derry Healthy Cities, the Civic Alcohol Forum (Derry) the DHSSPS and the DoHC gave CAWT their support to make a successful application to the EU NTERREG IVA programme to develop a community mobilisation project to implement a programme that would support a process of cultural change on alcohol utilising the skills, leadership and expertise of existing agencies in all sectors. Website: www.cawt.com/alcohol
While the majority of people enjoy alcohol in a moderate and responsible way, misuse of alcohol has become a serious risk to public health. Alcohol related offences increased by 30% between 2003 and 2007 and far outweighed illegal drug related offences by 76,822 to 7,636 in 2003. Alcohol is a contributory factor in 34% of Domestic violence cases, 46% of all Homicide perpetrators, 44% cases of interpersonal harm & a Contributory factor in Suicide (Source: Alcohol Action Ireland) In 2005/09, Alcohol Related Traffic accidents =1515, Killed = 108, serious injuries = 572, other injuries = 2048. In 2008/09, Alcohol related crime = 6299; criminal damage =1152; offences against the person = 4247; Sexual offences = 101; theft = 327; offences against the state = 99. (Source: www.psni.police.uk)
This dramatic increase in alcohol related harms and its negative impact on health, family life and public order has prompted a variety of organisations to come together to develop The Time IVA Change Project.
The Speakers: Michael Boyd, Brendan Murphy, Dr. Lynette Hughes
To book a place please contact Ollie Mullan at Roe Valley Leisure Centre on: 028 77764009. x243. Alternatively people can just turn up on the night. |

Shirt factory memories at Free Tower Museum event
The Tower Museum will be throwing its doors open to the public this Saturday bringing to life aspects for our city’s past. The award winning facility will be open until 9pm on Saturday 14 May and admission is free. The event is part of a European wide campaign which encourages museums to open at night-time. During the evening visitors will have the chance to find out more about our rich Shirt Factory heritage.
Margaret Edwards from the Heritage and Museum Service of Derry City Council said she hoped the event would encourage locals and visitors alike to come visit the facility and join in the celebrations.
“This year’s event will be a celebration of our shirt factory heritage. The focus will be a performance directed by Pat Mulkeen from her play the “The Shirt Tale” using local actors, which starts at 7 pm. Its a great chance to visit the Museum for free and participate in the activities to remember the past and the impact the shirt factories had on our city,” she commented.
Pat Mulkeen, who is directing the play, said she was delighted to get the opportunity to share her play with the public. Encouraging people to come along she said it was a chance for front-stitchers, smoothers or patent-turners, who worked in some of the local factories such as Ritchie's, Wilkinson’s, Hogg & Mitchell's, the City or The Star, to come together and share memories. Even if you didn’t you might enjoy this little celebration of an aspect of the city’s past that so many of us remember. You might even learn to jive……
For further details about the event contact the Tower Museum at 028 71 372411 or email museums@derrycity.gov.uk |
