The Peace and Reconciliation  Group would like to invite you to attend a seminar–Policing and Justice: regarding dealing with the past”

Where: The Junction, Bishop Street, L'Derry

When:   Monday 26th  April 2010

Time:    11.00am – 1.00pm

Panel Chair: Eamonn Deane, Holywell.

As part of the Community Relations Week the Peace and Reconciliation Group are hosting a seminar discussion on the impact, locally, of the devolution of policing and justice powers, regarding dealing with the past.

Both of these issues have been widely portrayed as contentious but there has been little opportunity for the general public to have an input on how they impact on the local community.

This is an opportunity to become involved in a discussion with a panel of speakers who are from the city and work directly in the field of peace building and peace keeping who are quite prepared to share their views and answer questions from the general public.

Please confirm your attendance by returning the attached booking form and return it to Teresa Melaugh, at the above address, or by email on or before Monday 19th April 2010.  Alternatively email info@peaceprg.co.uk

Civil Rights poster auction

A reprint of the original poster for the October 5th 1968 civil rights march is currently up for auction on e-bay. It is expected to attract considerable interest mainly due to the fact that the backing of the framed item has been signed by a number of prominent individuals, including the Irish president Mrs. Mary McAleese and her husband Dr. Martin McAleese.

In addition to the signature of Dr. Conn McCluskey, the founder of the Campaign for Social Justice in the early 1960s, are several others. These were collected at a special buffet reception at Áras An Uachtaráin in March 2009, and include Nobel Laureate John Hume, Austin Currie, Ivan Cooper, Bernadette McAliskey (nee Devlin), Anne Devlin, Michael Farrell, Denis Haughey and Fionnbarra Ó Dochartaigh, a co-founder of the movement for civil rights in 1967.

The buffet reception, attended by scores of civil rights veterans, was set in motion by the President, her husband and staff following their attendance at a 40th anniversary event at Derry’s Guildhall, which was addressed by Mrs. McAleese on October 5th 2008. Derry’s first  civil rights march in 1968 was banned by then Minister for Home Affairs, William Craig, who was later sacked from the Stormont cabinet, by Prime Minister Terence O’Neill..

Other memorabilia currently on offer on e-bay include unframed copies of the reprint, the civil rights badge, and a specially commissioned DVD entitled “We Shall Overcome”.  Proceeds from the e-bay promotion will be used to defray expenses for the 2010 Annual McCluskey Summer School. Interested parties are cordially invited to contact the Derry and N-W Civil Rights Network, via rights.civil@googlemail.com

“Clouds on a Mountain Road” comes to Galliagh

Greater Shantallow Community Arts are delight to extend an open invitation to Drama enthusiasts from across the city to come along the GSCA’s Community Arts rooms at the Four-Block Bloomfield  on Wednesday 10th March at 7.30pm to enjoy a wonderful new Sole Purpose Production.

Clouds on a Mountain Road by Orna Akad dramatises the meeting between an internationally acclaimed Palestine poet, Fadwa Tuqan, and a younger political ex-prisoner and militant, Inshirah Shiti. The two women review their options, given their personal and public histories and outline the reasons for doing what they did. The role of women in creating political change in the face of great violence is at the heart of the play. The play in Arabic has been seen in The West Bank, Haifa and Acco in Israel, and at the Arabic Theatre Festival in Morocco.

This production for International Womens Week is performed in English by two locally acclaimed actresses Carmel Mc Cafferty and Abby Oliveira and the writer, Orna Akad, will be present for post performance questions and answers.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday nights performance Oliver Green Artist Director of Greater Shantallow Community Arts said: We are delighted to host such a wonderful play here in the heart of our community and we wish Sole Propose and everyone involved  in this production ever possible success for their  Irish Tour, having the writer Orna Akad available to take questions after the performance  is a wonderful opportunity for local audiences and everyone who comes along to this free performance is guaranteed a warm  Galliagh welcome and a nice cup of tea.

If you would like to book a seat simply ring GSCA offices on 71357443 or just come along on the night.

Out of Hours Services In Western Area – Update From HSCB

The Health & Social Care Board (HSCB) wishes to inform you of upcoming changes to the staffing arrangements of the GP out-of-hours service in the Western area which are necessary to bring expenditure into line with available funds and to deliver a more efficient service.

Currently the service is provided by Western Urgent Care (WUC) in five centres:

Limavady Health Centre, Altnagelvin Hospital, Strabane Health Centre, Tyrone County Hospital, Erne Hospital, Enniskillen.

The service operates from 6.00pm to 8.30am on weekdays and 24 hours a day at weekends and bank holidays.

An analysis of activity levels has highlighted that there are low numbers of patients contacting the service after midnight as highlighted in the table below:

Centre

Average Face-to-Face Consultations per

Red-Eye Shift (midnight - 8.30am)

Altnagelvin

7.1

Limavady

2.3

Strabane

2.4

Omagh

3.0

Enniskillen

3.4

WUC Total

18.2

There are currently five GPs (one in each centre) on the midnight to 8.30am shift, seeing a total, on average, of 18 patients each night. The Health & Social Care Board and Western Urgent Care feel that there could be a more efficient use of staff during this period.

Therefore, the following changes will be implemented from 1 June 2010:

- A nurse will be employed to triage the calls

- The number of GPs on duty will be reduced from five to three. The three GPs will be mobile and cover all five centres, thus ensuring that patients will still be seen in their local centre.

- In addition, there will be a further three GPs on-call if required during any unexpected busy periods.

It is important to note that the timescales for appointments as set out in the NI Quality Standards will continue to be met. Following the introduction of the changes, the HSCB (West) and WUC will monitor activity and waiting times for an agreed period. We would be willing to provide fortnightly monitoring reports to your Council detailing activity and waiting times etc.

There will be minimal impact to patients. A nurse will be available to triage all calls; patients will be seen in their local centre by a GP within the current timescales; and those patients who require a home visit will continue to receive one.
