Advice NI, funded by Atlantic Philanthropies, has launched Rights 4 Seniors, an essential rights-reference for older people in Northern Ireland and those who work with them.
Following extensive research throughout Northern Ireland, assessing the informational needs of professionals in the Age Sector and older people themselves, Rights 4 Seniors draws together information relating to entitlements that the older members of our community should expect as their right. Rights 4 Seniors is designed to strict web usability standards and is written in accessible language.
Bob Stronge, Chief Executive of Advice NI, commented “The premise for this social justice website was to satisfy the informational needs of older people and professionals alike. They told us what information they had trouble accessing regarding age-specific rights and what they would like the website to do for them. Rights 4 Seniors, therefore, was created to their remit. It was even tested by them before release.”
Aside from making great swathes of information accessible to all, Rights 4 Seniors also includes forums for debate and questions, an up-to-date news section for relevant articles and a blog too. This will encourage greater interaction between the visitors and provide a perfect platform to raise awareness of age issues. It also connects with social media network sites such as Facebook and Twitter so we can carry on the conversation there too.
Mr. Stronge continues, “We are very conscious that modern society has created informational poverty amongst the most needy and vulnerable in our community. Rights 4 Seniors will help combat that. The big job for all of us remains: we need to bridge the great digital divide amongst older people of our community.” |

INCORE 12th International Summer School 2011
FINAL DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: 13 MAY 2011
INCORE (International Conflict Research Institute) at the University of Ulster wishes you to invite you to the 12th International Summer School. The 2011 International Summer School will run from 13th-17th June 2011. The Summer School will be based on the historic Magee Campus in the city of Derry/Londonderry, on the shores of Lough Foyle in the north west of Northern Ireland, easily accessible by road, rail and air.
For more information visit: http://www.incore.ulst.ac.uk/courses/ss/
This year we are offering three courses to choose from:
- Peacemaking and Peacebuilding: Exploring Lessons from Northern Ireland This course provides a unique opportunity to examine the trends, opportunities and challenges the region faces in relation to addressing the causes and consequences of conflict and to ensure its non-repetition. Northern Ireland has much to share with other societies emerging from conflict both negative and positive - and this intensive focus on the lessons emerging from a post-accord society will be of benefit to policymakers, practitioners and academics with an interest in conflict resolution and peacebuilding initiatives. The course will combine both traditional lectures, guest speakers involved in peacemaking and peacebuilding in Northern Ireland, and a case-study based approach. The course will be facilitated by Prof Brandon Hamber and Grainne Kelly (INCORE), and may run in two streams depending on numbers recruited.
- Evaluation in Conflict Prone Settings: The course covers the basics of conducting evaluations of initiatives, broadly understood, in conflict-prone settings. The focus of the course is not limited to peacebuilding initiatives, but applies to the evaluation of the full spectrum of initiatives: development, humanitarian, private sectors, community development, and so on. ³Conflict-prone² setting is similarly broad in its definition in the course. It can applied community work on interface areas of inner-cities, or it can be applied to more conventional, protracted, militarized conflicts. The course will be facilitated by Dr Kenneth Bush (INCORE) and Colleen Duggan (IDRC, TBC).
- Interpersonal Reconciliation after Violent Political Conflict: This course explores some of the key challenges and dynamics of reconciliation between people who have been directly involved in and/or affected by violent political conflict. The focus will be on what has aptly been described as the ³heart of deep peacemaking and cultural peacebuilding² (Ramsbotham), on reconciliation at the interpersonal level. The course will be co-facilitated by former combatants and survivors of the conflict in and about Northern Ireland, who have also become experienced reconciliation practitioners on the islands of Ireland and Great Britain and beyond. The course will be facilitated by Dr Wilhelm Verwoerd (Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation) and Alistair Little (Irish Peace Centres).
Northern Ireland Programme: Alongside these modules we also run the Northern Ireland programme to provide participants with an opportunity to network with others, gaining a deeper insight into the causes and consequences of the conflict in Northern Ireland. The Transitional Justice Institute at the University of Ulster will be running their Summer School entitled "Gender, Conflict and Transition" in the same week as the INCORE Summer School. Participants from the TJI Summer School will join INCORE Summer School participants during the Northern Ireland Programme and for social events.

You are cordially invited to attend the production of ‘The Exodus’ on 12th May at the Alley Theatre at 8.00pm.

Exodus, is one of the most significant and yet untold stories of
Northern
