Public Appointments Workshop - 21st February 2011

This workshop is to help demystify the public appointments process and to encourage an increase of applications from women.

Venue: The Junction, 8 Bishop Street, BT48 6PW

Date: Monday 21st February 2011

Time: 9.30am - 12noon

Cost: Free

This workshop is free of charge.  Places are limited and are on a first come basis.  To book a place contact Catherine or Mary by Thursday 17th February 2011, Telephone: (028) 7126 6291 or Email:  info@fwin.org.uk.

Public appointments are open to everyone, from all backgrounds and every walk of life. But, people tend to have preconceived ideas about the sort of background you need and are not confident that they would meet the required standard. Members of Boards of public bodies are selected on merit through a fair and open process. We understand that the appointment process can be intimidating, particularly for those who are not used to competitive selection.

Staff from the Department of Enterprise Trade & Investment's Public Appointments Unit want to help demystify the appointments process and to encourage applications. They are offering to potential applicants directly and provide an insight into how the process works. This will involve a short practical exercise after which feedback will be provided, (if desired). Here are some facts to help motivate you into coming along:-

FACT At 31 March 2009, there were some 1,634 public appointments held in Northern Ireland

FACT Women make up less than 1/3 of these appointments

FACT Men hold 78% of all the Chair appointments

FACT Less than 1% of those appointed during the period came from a minority ethnic background

FACT Less than 2% of those appointed during the period declared a disability

Ensuring a public appointments process in which merit and diversity are both reflected is challenging. Ministers may only balance Boards in terms of the diversity of skills and experience required. The focus now is on achieving as wide a pool of potential candidates as possible.

Some other facts they may not be aware of are:

FACT Departments employ a criteria-based selection procedure to recruit board members - CV's alone are not acceptable

FACT You can use examples from your working life or from your personal life, including any voluntary or community work you are or have been involved in

FACT Often, no specific academic qualifications are required; the requirements focus on core competences such as ‘communication skills’ or ‘analytical thinking’

FACT Each competition is scrutinised by an Independent Assessor

FACT All new board members receive induction training on board membership and corporate governance, where appropriate.

Spring Chickens ‘Strengthening Voices’ Project

Big Telly Theatre Company is delighted to announce the launch of ‘Spring Chickens Two’, its innovative creative outreach programme whose key aim is to promote creative expression and engagement within the older community across Northern Ireland

This new three year programme takes this pioneering project to a new level within two key themes, imagining solutions and building capacity.

‘Spring Chickens Two’ consists of a range of workshops, performances and a coaching and mentoring programme, focusing on an exciting range of creative and theatre based skills.

‘Strengthening Voices’ is a one off taster drama skills workshop delivered by a professional arts facilitator.  The workshop is open to those aged 50+ and is free of charge.  Workshops normally last 90 mins each, though they can be tailored to the specific requirements of your group.  The key aim of the workshop is to have fun, get to know each other and build your confidence.

Our experiences have demonstrated that there are both enormous personal and social benefits to be gained from being involved in ‘Spring Chickens’

“The Spring Chickens Programme has been a very successful one.  It has managed to achieve two quite distinct objectives, on the one hand bringing interest and quality to the lives of older people, particularly isolated older people, and on the other, raising awareness about society’s often misguided perceptions about older people, and their role.”

Dec ‘09: External Evaluation Report, Spring Chickens Programme ’07 – ’09.

‘Spring Chickens’ always welcomes new participants, so if you or your group would like to get involved do contact Big Telly for more information.

Big Telly Theatre Company:

Big Telly is a professional touring theatre company based in Portstewart, who design and deliver theatre productions, workshop programmes and community projects.  It concentrates on the visual potential of theatre through fusion with other art forms like dance, music, circus and film to create a unique sense of spectacle.  www.big-telly.com
