Have Your Say on Draft Strategic Framework for Community Development for NI

Rural Community Network (RCN) is working closely with other organisations in developing a new Strategic Framework for Community Development for NI.  This Framework will attempt to reflect the views and interests of everyone involved in community development practice.  RCN facilitated a number of workshops in June 2011 across Northern Ireland.  This sought the views of a range of people involved in community development practice (paid & unpaid) and has helped inform the development of a draft Framework.

RCN is now hosting a morning event on Wednesday 5th October at Lough Neagh Discovery Centre, Oxford Island, Craigavon (exact times to be confirmed and circulated).  This event is free of charge and lunch will be provided.

This will be an opportunity to discuss the draft Framework and provide feedback to help shape it further.  Please register your interest in this event by contacting Sarah Christie at RCN on 028 86766670 or email sarah@ruralcommunitynetwork.org.

The draft Framework will be widely circulated prior to this event and to all who attended the initial workshops.

If you are unable to attend this event, but would like to respond to the draft Framework, please contact Fergal O’Donnell at RCN or email fergal@ruralcommunitynetwork.org . Specific details for a consultation period during September/October will follow shortly.  Please note that the draft will not be available until approximately mid September 2011.

This initiative is supported by Building Change Trust.

The Business Case for Data Protection

18 October, City Hotel, L’Derry, 10am – 5pm

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is the UK’s independent authority set up to uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals. It has regulatory responsibility for the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) and the related Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR) as well as for the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

The DPA places responsibilities on all organisations to process personal information that it holds in a fair and proper way. To assist organisations to meet their legal obligations, on 18 October 2011, the ICO will be holding a Data Protection seminar in the City Hotel, L’Derry.

Entitled ‘The Business Case for Data Protection’, the event will feature speakers from the ICO and will focus upon the application of the DPA in various aspects of business, including employment, sales and physical security. It will cover issues as the obtaining and retaining of information about staff and customers, recording of CCTV images and disclosing or sharing  personal data

In the afternoon, there will be a choice of three specialist workshops to attend, covering cloud computing, how to develop a data protection policy and the sharing of personal data internally and externally. Within each workshop, there will be an opportunity for all delegates to raise data protection queries with ICO staff.

The event is free and a light lunch will be provided. To register your interest and request a booking form, please email ni@ico.gsi.gov.uk quoting the reference ‘DPA Event 18 October’ or telephone 028 9026 9380.

As places are limited, only those delegates who have pre-booked will be guaranteed a place on the day.

Keynote address: The Business Case for Data Protection (Ken Macdonald, ICO)

Customer data is one of a business’s key assets yet all too often the information is not afforded the protection that it requires leaving organisation open to the threat of the loss of its customer base and to regulatory action. By complying with the Data Protection Act, firms will reduce the risk of loss of data and, at the same time, can achieve real savings in expenditure.

What Businesses Need to Know – Data Protection in the Workplace (Nigel Treanor, ICO)

Personal data in the workplace can range from information contained within an employment application form to customer contact details and to recording of staff and customer images on CCTV. However, businesses are often unaware of the data protection implications from these practices. By following the eight data protection principles and adopting a ‘privacy by design’ approach, each organisation can plan and anticipate data protection issues as they arise within the workplace.

Data Protection and Me – a Practitioner’s View (Jayne Olorunda, Bryson Charitable Group)

Bryson Charitable Group is one of Northern Ireland’s leading charities with a workforce spread across several business areas, including residential recycling schemes, social care and key skills training. The diverse business model means the charity holds a great deal of personal and sensitive personal data, over a number of geographical sites. Earlier this year Jayne Olorunda embarked on the challenging task of devising a data protection policy for the entire charity, after seeking initial assistance and guidance from the Information Commissioner’s Office. Several months on, the process of changing organisational attitudes towards data protection has been begun and the charity are now the first voluntary sector organisation in Northern Ireland to have requested  an ICO audit of their data protection policies and procedures.

Lunch will followed by a choice of one workshop from the list below:

Workshop 1: Developing a Data Protection Policy – where to start? (Nigel Treanor, ICO)

A comprehensive and well considered Data Protection policy is a public declaration of a company’s commitment to the security and integrity of the personal data it holds. This Workshop will help an organisation assess the categories of personal data it holds and look at issues connected with collecting and processing personal data. It will also include how to devise a Privacy Statement and discuss security considerations for home workers.

Workshop 2: Explaining cloud computing and where the DPA fits it (Simon Rice, ICO)

Cloud Computing is the current hot topic in the IT world but the meaning of the term is becoming fuzzier by the day, as it means different things to different people. This workshop will explore what cloud computing really is and look at some of the claims that the technology makes. We will then review how this ties in with your obligations under the Data Protection Act. Following this workshop you will have a better understanding of what questions to ask yourself and a potential provider when considering a move to the cloud.

Workshop 3: Data Sharing for your business or organisation. How to comply with the law.  (Catherine  Vint, ICO)

This workshop will explore how to comply with the law when sharing customer and personal information. It will look at the Information Commissioner’s statutory code of practice on data sharing and what this means for organisations. It will help you to minimise the risk of breaking the law when sharing information, have a better understanding of what is acceptable practice and reduce the risk of questions, complaints or disputes about the way you share personal information.

Open Call to all Groups to Register Activities Available

Time IV a Change Project – Directory of Alternative Activities

Time IV a Change Project / Derry Healthy Cities have secured funding to compile a ‘Directory of Alternative Activities’. The aim is to provide young people within Derry City and the surrounding areas of alternative activities available to them.

Research suggests that many young people start drinking alcohol because they believe “there is nothing else to do”. We hope by showing them a wide range of activities they can take part in, many of which are free; that they will be discouraged from taking part in underage drinking.

If you would like to register your organisation and give details of the activities that you offer; please contact Kenda at Time IV a Change Project by email – kenda@derryhc.com or by telephone – 02871384568.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Next phase!

Volunteer Now is delighted to have secured additional funding to further develop our adult safeguarding work. Our next phase of work will build on the interest and enthusiasm generated for the publication ‘Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults, A Shared Responsibility’ and the generic training programme by developing a cascade model which supports delivery of adult safeguarding training at local level. Initially Volunteer Now will work to develop a network of cross sectoral adult safeguarding training partnerships across Northern Ireland, one in each Health and Social Care Trust. Through this network, a number of people from across all sectors will be recruited and trained to deliver the generic adult safeguarding training programme within their own organisation and at local level. This approach will ensure that all voluntary, community and independent sector organisations with a responsibility for adult safeguarding have access to high quality and quality assured adult safeguarding training.

A copy of ‘Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults, A Shared Responsibility’ can be downloaded from http://www.volunteernow.co.uk/publications.

For more information about the publication or training please contact Ruth Mulholland on 9081 8321 or email ruth.mulholland@volunteernow.co.uk.
