The new funds will be aimed at providing opportunities for older people to access and participate in the arts, particularly in dealing with social justice issues.

The three year Arts and Older People Programme, launched in July 2010, provides older people with the opportunity to use arts as a creative vehicle to explore and highlight social justice issues through a series of artist-led interventions.

This programme has its own priorities and criteria. However, all applications should fit within the objectives stated in the Council’s five year plan and within its artform policies.

Fit for Purpose - Regulation, Good Governance and the Use of Quality Standards Seminar

Community Evaluation Northern Ireland in conjunction with the Developing Governance Group is hosting a seminar focusing on the theme of being ‘Fit for Purpose’ and exploring Regulation, Good Governance and the Use of Quality Standards.  This is the third in our series of seminars and takes place on Thursday 14 April 2011 at NICVA from 10am – 1pm.

The community and voluntary sector is subject to a number of requirements including the new Charities legislation and increased regulation associated with the sector’s growing service delivery role. In addition, there is the on-going audit focus from funders and the need for evidence of the use of quality standards.  These developments present new challenges for organisations to be fully ‘fit for purpose’.  This event is targeted at community and voluntary groups and funders who wish to find out more about good governance and quality improvement approaches used within the sector.

The objectives of the seminar are:

- To deepen understanding of the current requirements and challenges faced by the sector with regard to regulation, governance and use of quality standards;

- To further inform understanding of the use of governance support tools and quality approaches within the sector and emerging capacity needs;

- To provide practical illustrations from two community/voluntary organisations representing distinctive approaches to governance and quality improvement;

- To provide the opportunity for participants to discuss the issues and share practice on the theme.

The event brings together a variety of stakeholders around this theme including speakers from the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland; Big Lottery Fund; HSC; Charities Evaluation Services; The Developing Governance Group; The CEDAR Foundation and Early Years – The Organisation For Young Children.

The seminar is funded by the Big Lottery Fund through the Building Change Trust programme.

There is no charge for the event and anyone wishing to attend should telephone CENI on 028 9024 8005 or email kerry@ceni.org. Lunch will be provided. Places will be available on a first come first served basis.

Why Affordable Credit Matters?

Thursday 10th March 2011, 10am - 4pm, Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast BT7

In Northern Ireland the use of high cost financial services is widespread. Housing Rights Service has noted an increasing number of tenants and homeowners in arrears who are relying on high cost credit facilities such as doorstep lenders, catalogues, pawnbrokers, pay day loans and illegal money lenders. These sources of credit can be extremely costly, with APRs ranging anywhere from between 100 to over 100,000%.

As part of our Preventing Possession Initiative, we are holding a one day conference to focus on this pressing issue.

“Why Affordable Credit Matters’’ will provide:

- An examination of the challenges that inhibit the potential provision of widespread affordable credit in Northern Ireland.

- An insight into current UK Government policies relating to the provision of finance in local communities and of promoting the financial inclusion agenda.

- Good practice examples highlighting the use of partnership working to promote access to affordable credit.

- An opportunity to debate how Northern Ireland can widen access to affordable financial services, including the potential role for housing providers and credit unions.

- Breakout sessions reflecting the current debates and initiatives around the issue.

- A follow up action plan detailing what is required to make affordable credit more available in Northern Ireland.

Contributors will include:

- Northern Ireland Consumer Council

- Research unit for Financial Inclusion - Liverpool John Moores University

- Chartered Institute of Housing, Scotland & Northern Ireland

- Trading Standards Illegal Moneylending Team, (Birmingham TBC)

- Moneyline Cymru, Wales

Please see attached booking form for contact details and further information.

2011 Census Outputs – March 2011 User Information Events

As part of its ongoing user consultation, the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency (NISRA) is organising two Census user information events to discuss proposals for the outputs from the 2011 Census.

The purpose of the events will be to:-

- provide an update on the 2011 Census operation;

- capture your views on the type of outputs that should be produced from the 2011 Census and the ways in which they should be disseminated;

- discuss the underlying geography that should be adopted for the outputs; and

- provide update on the Statistical Disclosure Control procedures that will be deployed to protect the confidentiality of the information provided by the general public.

The information events will run from 9:30am to 1:30pm and will be followed by a light lunch. They will take place as follows:

Belfast, Tuesday 22nd March

Cookstown, Wednesday 23rd March

Census Office would encourage users to attend one of these days to ensure that your requirements and views are considered in the ongoing development work.  To attend one of these days you will be required to register in advance and places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Further information will be provided as part of the registration process.

We would ask that you only register if you plan to attend, given that spaces are limited and hospitality is charged to the Census Office on the basis of the number of planned attendees rather than the actual number of attendees.

For those unable to attend, Census Office will be happy to accept written responses.
