Small Grants for European Year of Volunteering Programme 2011/12

The Small Grants for European Year of Volunteering Programme is a government funded grant programme designed to encourage and support volunteering by funding a wide range of volunteer-involving projects within voluntary and community groups.  It is targeted specifically at projects that promote volunteering amongst people not in paid work and other groups who are currently under-represented in the volunteering population.  The Small Grants for Volunteering Programme makes small grants (of up to £1,500) available to small, locally based volunteer-involving organisations incorporating the above ethos.

The European Year of Volunteering 2011 has 4 objectives:

- Creating an enabling environment for volunteering

- Improve the quality of voluntary activities

- Rewarding and recognizing voluntary activities and

- Raising awareness about the value and importance of volunteering

Please see attached for further information and contact details.

Small Grants is funded and administered by the Voluntary & Community Unit, part of the Department for Social Development.

BBC Children in Need July Deadline

BBC Children in Need provides grants to local projects that work with disadvantaged children and young people to make a real difference to the quality of their lives.  In the last year over £3 million has been distributed in NI and some 300 projects are currently in receipt of a grant in rural and urban communities throughout the country.

They very much want to hear from groups who are helping children and young people to overcome disadvantages such as:

- Living in poverty or situations of deprivation

- Disability

- Behavioural or psychological difficulties

- Illness, distress, abuse or neglect.

It is important that you are specific about the nature of the disadvantage in a request for funding, and clear about the difference your project will make.  You can make an application at any time of the year to fit with your project plans.

They operate four grant rounds with closing dates of:

15 July - notification by end of October

15 October - notification by end of January

15 January - notification by end of April

15 April - notification by end of July

All applications must be submitted online at www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey where you will find details of how to apply. You can also contact the local staff team at 028 9033 8221

Hot Opportunities

If you enjoy volunteering or would like to try it out, here are just a few of the volunteering  opportunities available in your area

Marie Curie – Community Ambassador
The City Friends of Marie Curie Cancer care are recruiting Community Ambassadors. They will play a key role in helping the charity to increase awareness and understanding of its work within the Derry City Council Area. Our Ambassadors will ‘tell the Marie Curie story’ delivering talks to local groups and organisations. These talks will ensure more people know about Marie Curie’s services in their area and how to access them. The role will also be pivotal in increasing volunteering and fundraising support for the charity locally.

Positive Futures

The charity that supports children with learning disabilities is recruiting volunteers for their August Summer scheme in the Playhouse, running every Tuesday & Thursday during the month from 10am -3pm. Also, opportunities during September at the Playhouse from 10.30am -12.30pm to include one evening that month exist for interested volunteers.

AWARE – Support Group Facilitator

Could you volunteer to facilitate Aware’s Self-Help support Meetings? By helping with the preparation of the room, greeting members, circulating information about the group and other services and providing participants with relevant literature? This role is vital in the support that we offer our members.

VOYPIC(Voice of Young People in Care)-Volunteer Mentor

Could you offer a social, educational and recreational service to young people aged between 12-18 years old who are in care, to assist in lessening the feelings of loneliness and isolation that young people in care may feel and to encourage young people to have goals and aspirations for their future? If so why not volunteer with VOYPIC?

CHEST, HEART & STROKE – COMMUNITY FUNDRAISING TEAM

Volunteer team required to assist with fundraising events within the North-West, to include assistance and support for the fundraiser and any relevant admin, bag packs, managing collection boxes, “man” stalls and come up with new ideas! If you have good communication and inter-personal skills and full of bright ideas about raising much needed funds and like working as part of a team this could be the role for you!
