Woman “Creating a Shared Future” Over a cup of tea!

The Waterfoot Hotel, 20th January 2011 , 7pm – 10pm

Gateway to Protestant Participation is a European Union Peace III funded programme, led by the YMCA in partnership with the North West Peace III Cluster area compromising of Derry City Council, Strabane District Council, Omagh District Council and Donegal, aims to encourage the participation of the Protestant community in the North-West, particularly in disadvantaged urban and rural areas.

GPP are running a woman’s event in Londonderry entitled Woman- Creating a shared Future. Woman played a strong role in helping create Peace in the province and GPP were approached by a number of individuals and groups about running such an event-so here it is! Not all speakers/ facilitators have been secured although we do have some great stories that will be told on the evening. This ranges from woman who were involved in Politics, Business, cultural and community and from a family perspective. The event aims to give all women a voice in their experiences of what we have and can achieve in helping to create a shared future for all.

Aim

The aim of the event is to bring together woman from the North West to share their stories and experiences of the past conflict and our shared transformation to Peace. These intimate and informal conversations are more beneficial and give all women a greater opportunity to have a voice, as well as talking openly and honestly about their individual experiences and their role in creating a shared future free of conflict for the next generation.

Format of a Café style event

Within the event there will be eight tables, at each table there will be a facilitator. Each table will accommodate approximately 5-10 people, depending on numbers in attendance. Throughout the evening participants will have the opportunity to visit six tables and participate in discussions at each table. Each facilitator will have 20 minutes with each group; during these 20 minutes the facilitator will give a brief outline of personal experiences of the past conflict and their involvement in activity that has benefitted the promotion of a shared future and their community. The participants will then be invited to ask questions on each facilitator’s experiences and discuss their own experiences.

Refreshments will be provided.

Transport from Omagh & Strabane will be available.

RSVP: lisa@ymca-ireland.org or 028 7130 1662 before Monday 17/1/11.

Please state if you require transport.

“A Man’s World” Awareness event

Derry City Council would like to extend an invitation to you and/or a representative from your organisation to attend an awareness event, which is being hosted by Derry City Council in association with Men’s Action Network on Wednesday 02 February 2011 at 10am in the Guildhall, Derry.

Men make up almost half the population in Northern Ireland (49.1% approximately) however their issues largely go unheard unless it is to highlight their shortcomings.  Attention tends to focus negatively on men’s actions and behaviours as opposed to highlighting their issues regarding their thoughts, feelings, attitudes or values.

The objectives of today’s event include focusing on men’s and boy’s health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models.  It is an occasion to highlight discrimination against men and boys and to celebrate their achievements and contributions, in particular for their contributions to community, family, marriage, and child care.

This occasion also provides attendees with the opportunity to become acquainted with the support mechanisms that are available to them in the form of the local groups and organisations who operate in this field.

A light buffet lunch will be provided after the event and this will allow you the opportunity to network with the representative groups and other invited guests.  Full details of the format for the event are attached for your information.

If you are able to attend the event please complete and return the attached response form.

Derry Healthy Cities seeks your help!

Derry Healthy Cities have secured funding to compile a youth directory/booklet to give young people information on activities that are available for them to take part in within the Derry City Council area.  Research with young people has suggested that many start drinking alcohol because they believe that “there is nothing else to do” and we hope that by showing them that there are a wide variety of activities they can take part in, many free of charge, that they will be discouraged from taking part in underage drinking”.

If you would like your organisation included or can provide me with a list of organisations that come under the following: Sports, Youth Groups & Organisations, Art & Culture, Music Venues, Church & Religions, Helplines, (Lifeline, Samaritans, Teenage Pregnancies etc)., Sexual Health, Drop In Centres, Schools of Dance, Karate Clubs, Café Culture,  Communities of Interest- for e.g. Asylum youth, Gay, Bisexual etc.
