To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Volunteers’ Week and recognise the European Year of Volunteering 2011, North West Volunteer Centre and Derry City Council’s Kickstart to Work programme will be hosting a Volunteer Fair at the Millennium Forum on Tuesday 7th June 2011.
Volunteers’ Week is a national campaign to celebrate volunteering, which takes place from 1 to 7 June each year. The Week focuses on the key themes of recognising and rewarding current volunteers and recruiting new volunteers by encouraging people to give volunteering a try. The Volunteer Fair will be the largest event showcasing volunteering in the North West of Ireland with up to 40 local groups promoting their activities and encouraging people to ‘volunteer…for a change’. Volunteers are motivated in many different ways however behind this is a real strong desire to make a significant impact on the lives of others.
Jacqueline Garnon, Centre Manager of North West Volunteer Centre explained, ‘Volunteering can provide a real focus to someone’s life and provide a gateway to other opportunities including paid work, but more importantly, the impact of volunteering has a profound effect on us all; individuals, families, the environment and society as a whole. It is the lifeblood of our communities and there is no doubt that volunteering is making a real difference to people’s lives in the North West.’
Mena Kearney, Job Brokerage Officer, Derry City Council, commented ‘The Kickstart to Work programme on behalf of Derry City Council is supporting The North West Volunteer Centre during Volunteers’ Week by bringing their outreach service directly to local. Kickstart to Work offers a range of services to residents and businesses in the Derry City Council area, helping people match their abilities and interests with jobs or training opportunities. Volunteering can assist in raising an individual’s confidence while working towards taking up paid employment.’
The Volunteer Centre is now calling local voluntary/community organisations to register their interest in reserving a stall at the Volunteer Fair. The event at the Millennium Forum presents a fantastic opportunity to recruit new volunteers, promote projects and activities and find out what other groups are up to. Participation is free however promotional stalls at the event are limited. Please contact Jacqueline or Geoff at the North West Volunteer Centre on tel. 028 7127 1017 or email geoff@volunteeringnorthwest.co.uk to request an Expression of Interest form or to find out more about this event. Completed forms must be returned before Friday 6th May 2011. |

Community and voluntary sector election question time
Sectoral groups across Northern Ireland have been stepping up their campaigning in the run up to the May 5 elections and now is an important time for our joint work on influencing the budget and political priorities. While it was this Executive and Assembly that passed the current budget the new government will be tasked with deciding how departments spend that money and agreeing a Programme For Government. It is important that voluntary and community organisations ensure that the issues that matter to the people and communities we work with are at the heart of these decisions.
In order to give you the opportunity to question political parties in the run up to the election we have organised a Voluntary and Community Sector Election Question Time on Thursday 7 April at 9.30 - 12.00 in NICVA.
The event will be hosted by broadcaster and journalist William Crawley. It will also feature the official launch of NICVA's Policy Manifesto 2011 which outlines our vision for a positive, inclusive and stable Northern Ireland. To book a place contact cathy.breslin@nicva.org |

Focus on Family scoop prestigious award
Focus on Family were delighted to be recognised for their ongoing good relations work within the Coleraine area at the recent Coleraine Borough Council Community Endeavour Awards. Beating off stiff competition from other groups working towards developing a positive shared future for all, Focus on Family were awarded first prize in the Good Relations Category, for their ground-breaking ‘Understanding Our Space – Celebrating Diversity’ Programme which brings together women from Ballysally and Creevagh, L/Derry, on a cross-community programme of activities.
Focus on Family is a nurturing and development family centre based in the heart of the Ballysally Estate and provides local people with quality childcare, nurturing programmes, domestic abuse programmes, skills courses, complementary therapies and much more. There is also a strong emphasis on providing opportunities for local people to develop genuine relationships, within a good relations context, with groups and individuals from other cultural and religious backgrounds. From this ethos, the ideas behind ‘Understanding Our Space – Celebrating Diversity Programme’ were born.
The Programme won the award based on the hands-on approach to bringing together different people from our local communities. Brendan Patterson, Project Manager at Focus on Family said ‘It will be hard to find another programme that has managed so effectively to deliver genuine, tangible, cross-community work. Much of this is down to the energy and drive of the staff involved in the programme, the quality of the components being delivered within it, and the support of a whole range of internal and external stakeholders. But, most notably, the overwhelming success of the programme is what started it in the first place – the willingness of the participating women to make an actual difference, to stand up and take those difficult first steps in the knowledge that it would lead to a better future for all involved’.
Following the most recent residential between the two groups – that focused on sharing intimate stories and experiences of ‘The Troubles’ through the medium of creative arts – one of the women provided feedback on her experience of the programme that really captures the feeling among the participants – “We went away as two different groups, and came home as one big group...........one big family” The wider benefits for the Coleraine area are that more than being simply participants on the programme, the women involved are developing skills around community leadership that will have far reaching positive impacts within the local area and over a far greater period of time than the duration of the programme itself. Already women are involved in spin-off projects that are working to ensure that everyone – local young people, men, older people, ethnic minorities, etc – are also involved in activities, events and programmes that make a real and positive change in their ability to understand and respect their neighbours.
In a time when there is a wider collective will within Northern Ireland to ensure that all our futures are better than our recent pasts, it is heart-warming to see how a programme can make that real difference and change people’s lives for the better - Understanding Our Space – Celebrating Diversity is that programme.
For more information on the Programme or to find out how to get involved, please contact Susan Comerford, Programme Officer, Focus on Family on 028 7032 9550. |
