Performing Rights Society Foundation final deadline for 2011

The Performing Rights Society Foundation (PRSF) is a UK wide funder of new music across all genres.
They have announced that they are reviewing their funding processes and will have only one further funding deadline this year - 15 August 2011.

To enable the review there will be no October deadline for 2011.
New funding opportunities will be launched in January 2012. In the meantime they are working on improving our application process.

The August deadline will be for a range of types of grants for new music:

Festivals
The PRS for Music Foundation will focus its support on festivals whose main activity is the promotion of innovative, new music, by UK based music creators. The music needs to be innovative and distinctive within its genre. Not for small, local festivals or for those running for the first time. For first time applicants the upper level of grant is £3,000.
www.prsformusicfoundation.com/funding/festivals.htm

New Works
Awards for New Works offers support to those wishing to commission an innovative and high-quality piece of new music from UK based music creators (e.g. composers/songwriters/producers). The average award is £3-4,000. This is a highly competitive fund.
www.prsformusicfoundation.com/funding/newworks.htm

Organisations
The PRS for Music Foundation defines new music organisations as those organisations where new musical activity is their only or main activity. For first time applicants the upper level of grant is £3,000.

Performance Groups
For first time applicants the upper level of grant is £3, 000.

ECF Collaboration Grant

Collaboration Grants fund transnational, cross-sectoral activities by independent cultural and artistic organisations working together or with organisations from other sectors. The main applicant needs to be a cultural organisation based in Europe (EU Europe and EU Neighbourhood region), while partner applicants can work in sectors outside the cultural field.

ECF regards the ideal ‘collaboration’ as one that brings a renewed understanding of Europe to people of all backgrounds, and inspires them to regard the world’s future as a shared enterprise. We particularly admire efforts that are daring, different and challenge the status quo.

The average award funded is €15,000 with the maximum being €30,000.
Deadline= 1 September 2011

Council lends support to DIVERT Underage Music Festival

The ‘Divert Project’ run by Dove House Community has recently been supported by Derry City Council to run a 1 day music festival in Guildhall Square for young people from all backgrounds.

The free festival, which will take place on Wednesday 10th August 1-8pm at the Guildhall Square, aims to showcase a number of up and coming local bands and artists – all of which are under the age of 18. This event is providing young people age 13 – 17 with the opportunity to experience the enjoyment of a music festival in a shared safe space within their own city.

“Positive and alcohol-free events for young people from across our city are definitely needed,” commented the Mayor, Alderman Maurice Devenney.  “So far in my summer as Mayor I have had the privilege of seeing a lot of great activities run for and by our local youth.  The Divert festival will be a great reward for the many young people who are a credit to their city and local communities.  I hope young people from all parts of our city will take part and enjoy the opportunity.”

“We are delighted that as part of our Good Relations Strategy we have been given the opportunity to lend some support to Divert.  Council is keen to see public spaces like the Guildhall Square used positively for individuals from across all communities and identities.  ‘Teenage Kicks’ will not only be an excellent music showcase but will also feature a number of information stands including the ‘Hands Off My Friend’ anti-hate Crime campaign and a Community Relations stall promoting local diversity.  The new Peace Bridge also provides easy access to Guildhall Square for Waterside youth to participate in the event.”

Council has also provided in kind support to the event through its Safety Advisory Group and provision of market stall marquees for the information stands.

Bronách McMonagle from Divert added “Divert are extremely thrilled with the Teenage Kicks music festival which we envisage will attract in the region of 2000 youth. The idea for the festival was born out of a conversation held by Divert & local music label Practice Makes Perfect, we recognized the vital role music plays in young people’s lives no matter what their background, therefore seen a unique opportunity to bring young people from throughout the city and beyond to unite and celebrate a shared interest. We have also invited a number of organizations to host a market stall at the event – providing a window of opportunity for young people to access services they may not otherwise do. Such organisations include Zest, Nexus, Youthlife, Family Planning, Drink Think, Divert etc. We will also be instilling arts and culture further into the event by providing dancers, artists, face painters, henna tattooists etc.”

The event has also been kindly supported by the Drink Think Project and Public Health Agency.

New stories, new possibilities

To create a new story for our community we need to free ourselves from the old stories.

Like fish in water we are unaware of the many tribal beliefs that shape our behaviour in the community. Some of these beliefs have been unquestioned for hundreds of years e.g. “We were here first”, “This is our country”, “We have never been welcome”, “No Surrender”, “Tiochaidh ar la”. This place should be called “Londonderry or Derry.”  “The other side can’t be trusted.”

As a result the community remains stuck with its own separate convictions, unable to release the past and experience new possibilities in how we create the future together.

The purpose of this course is to teach participants a simple process of enquiry that, when applied to limiting beliefs, provides an opportunity to discover new perspectives that are truer and ultimately more effective in creating harmony in the community.  This method of enquiry can also be used effectively in all areas of life, especially in conflict with others and personal stress.  The only requirement from the participants is an open mind.

The course will also draw on the expertise of local historians.

E-mail/Text Alert System for those Living/Working in City Centre

As you know I try to keep as many people as possible in the city centre informed of bomb alerts, road closures, road works etc.  I am constantly trying to grow our database to distribute email and text alerts to as many people as possible but as you can imagine this is quite time consuming.

If you would like to be added to our alert system please complete the table below and return by email.  Also, if you feel that there is anyone else who would benefit from this service can you forward this email to them.

Mobile numbers are important in an incident such as a bomb alert as you may be evacuated from your workplace and have no access to email alerts.

‘Don’t bin it - Bling it!’ at Creggan Country Park

Have you ever looked into a wardrobe full of clothes and found yourself saying I have nothing to wear? Well a new Creggan Country Park project could help!

‘Don’t bin it - Bling it!’ is a new project funded by Derry City Council that aims to promote a different kind of recycling and provides an opportunity for participants to learn new craft skills.  Learn how to alter clothing; transform jeans into shorts or create a new top from a dress you no longer wear! Learn how to knit baby blankets and clothing or create something new to give as a special gift!

The next workshop will take place at Creggan Country Park on:

Thursday 18th August 2011, 6.30pm – 9.30pm

Refreshments and buffet included

THE EVENT IS FREE

DUE TO THE DEMAND FOR THE FIRST WORKSHOP, ADVANCED BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL AS PLACES ARE LIMITED TO 15

Participants are advised to bring along an item of clothing, shoes or household items such as blankets etc that they would like to transform.

The project promotes Derry City Council’s successful recycling campaign.  Recycling is essentially making something old into something new and generates a host of environmental, economic and social benefits. ‘Don’t bin it Bling it’ will encourage people to reuse old clothes by transforming items into on trend fashion!

National Sporting Event benefits from local volunteers

The British Transplant Games are being held 4th – 7th August in Northern Ireland.  Over 70 volunteers have been recruited to support the delivery of the Games and will carry out a variety of roles including, registration, stewarding, branding and helping with the different sports.   Wendy Osborne, CEO Volunteer Now says, “Volunteer Now is delighted to support the British Transplant Games and encourage volunteer involvement, particularly during European Year of Volunteering.   Volunteers will make the difference between the delivery of a good and a great Event.   There is a wealth of volunteering taking place across Northern Ireland and this is yet another opportunity for people to actively engage with their community and contribute to a fun, lively and worthwhile activity.”

Over the years the event has grown from a 1 day to a 4 day event attracting over 800 competitors and nearly 1500 spectators, including donor families.  The Games are hosted annually in different cities around the UK and will be returning to Northern Ireland for the first time since 1998.

Lynne Holt of Transplant Sport UK says, “Volunteers are invaluable to the Games every year and we are forever thankful for their continued support.   As a charity we work hard to put together a successful event, but funding is always difficult and we simply couldn’t do it without the help of the generous people who offer up their time and support.  I think I can speak on behalf of all of our competing athletes when I say thank you – we could not do it without your help.”

Make sure you’re correctly licensed

Did you know that you can be fined up to £1,000 if you are caught watching TV without a licence?

TV Licensing is working with North West Community Network to ensure that people are aware of the circumstances when they have a legal responsibility to have a TV Licence. Put simply, you need to be covered by a valid TV Licence to receive or record television programmes as they are being broadcast. This is the case whether you are receiving the programmes via TV or any other device, such as a mobile phone or a PC.

TV Licensing understands that some people find it hard to pay the annual fee of £145.50 for a colour TV Licence or £49 for a black and white licence in one go.  For this reason, there are a number of different ways to pay for a TV Licence, including a payment card.

TV Licensing’s Payment Card is designed to make buying a TV Licence easier for those who struggle to pay in one lump sum by allowing them to spread the cost into weekly, fortnightly or monthly payments.  They are open to everyone and over one million people are making payments by cash or a debit/credit card at any one of over 21,000 PayPoint outlets nationwide, online, over the phone or by SMS (text) message. Anyone wishing to find out more about signing up for a cash payment plan should give TV Licensing a call on 0300 555 0300.

People wishing to pay or save for their TV Licence in person can use PayPoint’s growing network outlets using cash or debit card payments.  PayPoint outlets can be found in newsagents, convenience stores, supermarkets, petrol stations and other retailers. To find their nearest PayPoint, people can visit www.paypoint.co.uk/locator.htm or call 0300 790 6063.

In addition to paying at a PayPoint outlet, there are many other ways to pay.  More people are choosing to pay by Direct Debit, now used by over 12 million licence fee payers, while others choose to pay via our website, by using a debit or credit card over the phone or by putting a cheque in the post.

TV Licensing helps people who do not have English as a first language to understand their legal obligation by providing literature in 18 different languages and offering an interpretation service over the phone in over 170 languages. To use the translation service, please call 0300 790 6044.

TV Licensing would always prefer people to be properly licensed rather than risk prosecution, which is why we make it as easy as possible to pay and work hard to ensure people are aware of their licensing requirements. Unfortunately some people still try to avoid paying for a TV Licence when they need one, and we will enforce the law on behalf of the honest majority who pay.

If you would like more information, or want to buy a TV Licence, please call 0300 790 6071 or visit www.tvlicensing.co.uk.
