Social Impact Programme Targets Ireland’s Innovative Social Entrepreneurs

Social Entrepreneurs Ireland is now accepting applications for the Social Impact Programme, including tailored practical assistance and funding of up to €130,000 to develop innovative approaches for addressing social problems or issues in Ireland.

The programme is aimed at the individuals who lead such organisations and who are the main driver and primary decision maker. Organisations or projects should already be up and running and utilise an innovative solution or different method to tackle an existing social problem - and be able to demonstrate the impact that the solution has on the social challenge. Social enterprises based in
Ireland and Northern Ireland are eligible to take part, although the focus of their organisation or project must be on helping people living in Ireland.

UnLtd are looking for people who want to make a difference- come and meet us!

UnLtd supports individuals who want to create a positive change in their communities. We call these people ‘Social Entrepreneurs’: ‘social’ because they are interested in their community or society, and ‘entrepreneur’ because they make things happen.  We help them by providing advice, training, cash and other types of support that they may need to run their project.

UnLtd works with people over the age of 16 who are based in the UK and who have an idea to respond to a social or environmental issue. In addition to our core programme we also run programmes focusing on social entrepreneurs over the age of 50 and people with digital ideas to help improve the health and well-being of the UK public.

We will be hosting a series of informal information sessions and light lunches in February and March 2011. These will be opportunities to meet face-to-face with staff and find out about who we support, how we support them and how our application process works.

Derry/Londonderry, Cresco Trust - 15th February 11.30am-2.30pm

Belfast, UnLtd offices - 16th February 12.30pm - 2.30pm

Enniskillen, Fermanagh House - 16th February 11.30am -2.30pm

Coleraine, West Bann Development Centre - 3rd March 11.30am - 2.30pm

Each session will begin with a cafe conversation in which people can find out more about UnLtd, discuss their ideas and meet staff. At lunch, there will be a presentation on our work and an opportunity to hear from previous Award Winners, followed by a Q&A session. It is possible to attend at any stage or register for only one session.

Who should attend?

People 16 and over living in Northern Ireland who wish to apply for an award, either as an individual or an informal group.

Any community or development workers who can help us promote the programme in their area or who are interested in our work.

Business advisors working with Start up/Social Entrepreneurship programmes.

For further information and to register, please phone Jane Bryson on 028 9024 4007.

Opening the Closet Door

Thursday 3 March, 9.30am – 4.30 pm, UNISON Centre, Belfast.

UNISON is hosting the first conference of its kind in Northern Ireland addressing the needs and issues of people experiencing abuse in same sex relationships.  Opening the Closet Door is a partnership initiative between LASI, Rainbow, the 24hr Domestic Violence helpline, Victim NI and Youth Action supported by the PSNI and the Domestic and Sexual Violence Unit in the DHSSPS.  The conference is aimed at professionals and service providers to put the issues and complexities of same sex relationship abuse on the radar to promote awareness and discussion and improve services and accessibility.  Nel Whiting, Learning Development Worker from Scottish Women’s Aid will introduce the context for the issues in terms of gender based violence and argues that the issue of same sex abuse is a gendered issue.

The conference will be workshop based offering an introductory session on sexual orientation awareness and subsequent workshops on issues for men, women, young people and the challenges for service and support provision.  The day will conclude with a discussion about the way forward and some recommendations and conclusions.  Professionals and agencies are very welcome, please book early to avoid disappointment.  (£25 statutory, £15 voluntary)

What would I say?...

International Culture Arts Network (ICAN) is a new vibrant project designed by the Playhouse, which builds on the successes of previous Playhouse projects. ICAN will be delivered by the Playhouse in partnership with North 55, Co. Donegal. This project is part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the Peace and Reconciliation (PEACE III) Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.

Since its inception the Playhouse has, and continues to nurture local, national and International collaborations and partnerships which have thus far provided a range of inspiring outcomes.

We are currently working on a project celebrating the lives of Women. As you know March 8th is international woman’s day. This year marks the centenary of this Global event. We propose together with women and girls across the City to host an exhibition in The Playhouse Plaza Gallery on the 12th of March. What is in this exhibition is down to you!

Project Summary: Theatre facilitator Nicky Harley will take women through a process of telling and sharing stories which are significant to that person. The females will work with Nicky to re-tell their story to the public by using a range of personal (or bought) objects, photos and text. We want to gather stories, objects, photographs, doodles, yarns, sketches, dedications, tributes, anecdotes and memories of women young and old. Collectively we will become the curators, we take over the space and we create our collective collage.

Aims & Objectives: This project will bring women together to share and tell their own individual story. The participants will;

- Develop techniques in listening

- Develop interviewing techniques

- Confidence to tell their story

- Providing a platform for women to share stories collectively

- Sharing space

- Confidence building

- Trust

- Reconnecting to their own emotional response

- Respond to one another’s story

Final Outcome: To celebrate International Women’s Day we will host a final one day exhibition in the Playhouse Plaza gallery on 12th March 2011, all groups and participants will be invited for a buffet and celebration at 2pm.

It’s very simple to get involved. If you or your group are interested or wish to find out more please contact Nicky Harley: nicky@derryplayhouse.co.uk or Elaine Forde: elaine@derryplayhouse.co.uk Tel: 02871268027.

ICAN is a three-year project which has been part-financed by the European Union's Regional Development fund through EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation (PEACE III) managed through Special EU Programmes Body.
